Betty TMemberLooks like a busy person to me, no time to get bored, covers wide variety. Good luck to someone who gets it.
October 27, 2011 at 5:21 pm #738545
goodgracesParticipantI agree, BettyT — that’s a lot to ask of someone called an “assistant” and paid only $11/12 an hour. Sounds much more like a Co-Office Manager position that should be compensated appropriately.
October 27, 2011 at 11:50 pm #738546
WeezieMemberIf you want someone who has these skills and is an asset to your business, and won’t leave as soon they figure out they can get paid more elsewhere after you have invested time and energy training them, then I suggest you consider raising this to $14/15 and hour. That is more reasonable for this type of position.

hammerheadParticipantUm it is a job people and everyone is crying, there are no jobs out there. No it is not a perfect wage, but I guess it is better than driving to Eastern Wa, picking apples, for 3 weeks. It could possibly turn into a full time job, and then increase in pay. Who knows.
October 28, 2011 at 6:12 pm #738548
dmcMemberI think this is perfectly reasonable. Obviously the employee isn’t going to be doing all of these things at once. Perhaps the employer was trying to be comprehensive with all of the tasks’ requirements. It is a part-time job in West Seattle folks. The pay isn’t going to be as good as a part time job in down town Seattle. I gotta’ say Hammerhead hit the nail on the… well you know. Good luck finding an employee Louise.

DianeParticipantI’ve seen a lot of jobs ads for downtown Seattle, for law offices and financial institutions, listing pay at $10/hr; that is offensive
~
I can totally see a local small West Seattle biz offering $11/12 to start; my take on details of this job description was also that they’re just trying to be comprehensive; some job ads only have 2 lines, some 2 pages, way too many don’t even list what their industry is, as if an office worker is a totally generic person who could care less what type of business they might be supporting; I like that this biz was clear about what they do, what the office asst might be doing, pay, contact info
~
and then there’s the ton of spam/scam ads on CL, which a job applicant has to be so very careful to avoid; on westseattleblog, we can trust that TR will catch the creeps and delete
~
Thanks Life in Balance Physical Therapy for using westseattleblog forum to offer a job to locals in the neighborhood; would love to see more local businesses do this; I check CL job ads often, so I see many local shops/biz advertise there, but not here; major kudos to westseattleblog for offering the service, and to the local businesses that use it
~
and thanks to all the local folks advocating for higher/living wages for us all
October 28, 2011 at 9:19 pm #738550
BostonmanMemberMaybe we should just pay everyone $50 an hour? I bet you could pay 9 to 10 and it would get filed. $11 to $12 an hour is good for a part time job.
Hell, I suspect I am going to be hiring 2 people in the near future. Makes me think twice about putting the jobs on here first. I could just post it on craigslist and not deal with the aggravation.
October 28, 2011 at 11:35 pm #738551
DianeParticipantlocal commentary is for sure a risk of posting anything here, ads or whatever; we are an opinionated bunch; I personally think lively thoughtful dialogue is a good thing
~
CL is not immune; if you post ads there, which most do, including myself, people still read them and make judgments about businesses; you just have no way of knowing people’s response on CL, unless they email you, because there’s no comment area; and flagging CL ads does nothing most of the time
~
yeh, $50/hr would be fantastic; I think most would be extremely happy with $15, which has often been cited as our area’s minimum “living wage”
October 28, 2011 at 11:44 pm #738552
BostonmanMemberOur areas minimum living wage? Pretty subjective if you ask me. Its great you can say its $15 but its just an opinion. If I had to pay $50 an hour I would just raise my sale prices which would either piss off the end buyer or make me go out of business.
October 29, 2011 at 12:13 am #738553
DianeParticipantnot my opinion; it’s been cited repeatedly by economic experts
October 29, 2011 at 12:17 am #738554
goodgracesParticipantThis whole thread has (no surprise — happens often in this forum) ended in snark and sarcasm. Diane is trying to be nice, provide personal perspective, balance, etc. Wheezie and I were simply stating that we thought the position seemed underpaid. And that invited judgment and venom. Bostonman — so many of your posts are uber-grumpy.
October 29, 2011 at 12:38 am #738555
GenHillOneParticipantWhat surprises me, is the statement, “$11 to $12 an hour is good for a part time job.” Huh? Hourly pay relates to the type of work and the necessary skills. Part-time status relates to how much of that type of work needs to be done for that business within a 40-hour week. I have no opinion on this job/pay as it’s described, but hope that more and more WS businesses will post their openings here. *Kudos to WSB btw for more clearly defining the use of this forum category!*

On a side note, I agree that I have seen some real doozies out there…specialized jobs, requiring a college degree, experience, and yeah, commute time, for $8-$9/hr. IMHO, those employers seem to be taking advantage of a bad situation.
October 29, 2011 at 1:12 am #738556
jamminjMember” $15 but its just an opinion. If I had to pay $50″
umm, there are many resources to show a regions average wage. And how to you go from $11/$12 to $50. The only one suggesting that is you.
job would be a good fit for a single person looking for a second job though.
