I’m sure I’m not the only one who received an email from Mayor Murray titled “State of the City 2017: Seattle’s plan to grow equitably and affordably.” On one hand, he talks about provide more affordable housing for middle-income people, and, on the other hand, he just proposed yet another property tax to aid the homeless (with no actual, viable plan in place). Middle- and lower-middle income people are being driven out of Seattle because they simply can’t afford the huge tax burden.
In fact, here’s the response I sent him (and this saddens me because I’m a staunch Democrat):
    Dear Mayor Murray,
I find it appalling that, on one hand, you speak about affordable housing, but on the other hand, you are asking for yet another tax for some vague plan to help the homeless. All those plans have failed miserably. These constant property-tax increases are driving middle-income homeowners out of Seattle. These taxes also affect renters; the landlords will pass the increase on to them.
The ever-increasing property tax will not make Seattle affordable for teachers, day-care workers, health-care workers, etc. Get real, and get out of the pockets of developers.

Ugggg! We have had three property tax hikes in the past two years. Our budget can’t take another one. What is the mayor thinking? Fight homelessness by driving out the middle class? We are seriously thinking of researching other locations and their property taxes and moving. Mr. mayor, we are barely holding on to our home. Please stop with the tax increases!

If a majority of us voted against them, then they might take us seriously. We have literally (not me necessarily) have voted for every property tax initiative since 2000. Roads, Parks (separating them from the general fund), Families and Education and something similar(twice)…fill in the rest. Until we say NO they will keep asking. Unless we say no, then they will figure we are sheep for the shearing. When we say no they may consider better drafted initiatives.

I am hoping we have reached our property tax limit and will vote no on the next one. We have to find the money somewhere else.

    Excuse me Jeanie,
Please refrain from questioning the enlightened wisdom of our dear Mayor Murray on the W.S. Blog. Due to his wealth and social standing he is in a much better position to know what you and other middle class residence of Seattle can afford to donate to live in this soon to be Utopian Liberal wonderland.
For the good of our most vulnerable progressive Democrat voters we simply cannot allow people like yourself who are obviously blinded by centuries of privilege and internal and unrecognized racism question comrade Murrays tactics.
If you persist with this radical interrogation of the authority of our compassionate Mayor. We will have our resident social therapist Kshama Sawant and her gang of social Justice Love merchants commence to re-educate you and you family as to the acceptable form of non-resistance allowed.
It will be comrade Sawant’s decision whether you are in need of her New and much improved form of ” Beating the hate out of you ” therapy that will be donated to you for your own good and free of charge…. with your tax dollars.
Please stop resisting it is not healthy for anyone.

Good one, Williamf64! I happen to be a liberal, and I happen to have common sense. I think plenty of liberals are fed up with ever-increasing property taxes with no accountability.

I am continually amazed at the total disconnect displayed by our Mayor and City Council when it comes to affordable housing and property taxes: They just don’t seem to get that the continuously increasing property taxes will not increase affordable housing in the City and in fact, the taxes are going to increase the cost of housing and continue to price people out.
Of course, as already mentioned, as long as we keep saying yes they’ll keep coming up with new taxes for us to vote on.

    Seattle, WA.
San Francisco part two. And how is that working out for the once so beautiful city by the bay?

William64, thank you for such an entertaining post! The sad part is that you are so right.

William: It’s not “Democrat voters” its Democratic voters – the Democratic party, not the Democrat party.
