SmittyParticipantWe get ONE WEEK of light traffic during the Winter/Spring time frame and this guy decides to police the bus lane? I am assuming that since he was there today he is planning to be there all next week.
You did this last year! Please, please, please feel free to do this (we all agree with it!), but do it when traffic is ALREADY SLOW!
Rant over.
And no, I will not talk to officer cool shades personally. It would slow down traffic.

JanSParticipantHe’s not slowing down traffic…scofflaws are. If people wouldn’t think they’re more important than anyone else, and simply follow the rules (don’t drive in the bus lane!), then he would be wasting his time. Get mad at them, not him.

SmittyParticipantJan, we all agree who is at fault and that they should be punished.
In fact, I am ok with him being there just about every week of the year – go get them!
My issue is WHY does he always pick the one week when traffic is actually decent to show up? Do it the week before. Do it the week after. Heck do it every week but spring break! It’s frustrating because it creates a bottleneck that backs traffic up all the way to the mill. I think he does it to spite me! :~)

schwaggyParticipantOne of his victims today didn’t pull far enough out of the bus lane thus creating a blockage while Cool Shades wrote his ticket. Mr. Shades didn’t even tell the guy to pull forward SO BUSES COULD GET BY.

JeannieParticipantOfficer Cool Shades: best name ever! With shades so cool, he should be enjoying spring break in Florida. Now, I have a lot of respect for most cops. I do find the bus lanes a bit confusing. Specifically, if I want to make a right turn, do I cut across the bus lane, or should I ease into the bus lane for a second just so I can turn more safely?
April 11, 2014 at 11:31 pm #806866
JanSParticipantJeannie, say you want to make a right turn from Alaska to go northbound on 42nd at QFC…yes, you can get into the bus only lane for that. Just don’t do it a block ahead of there :)

JeannieParticipantThanks, JanS! I wouldn’t want to get busted by Officer Cool Shades – or Officer Giant Moustache or Officer Cute or Officer Cranky or Officer Slightly Pudgy either, for that matter.

SmittyParticipantI should have clarified that this is in reference to THE officer cool shades who likes to hang out on the WSB eastbound at the exit to 99. He rightly pulls over bus lane cheaters. Last year he picked spring break to enforce the law(I assume by chance), and it looks like he is gearing up to do the same this year(he was practicing yesterday – now I know it’s his plan!). I am an admitted weird dude, and look forward to light traffic weeks based on school schedules! Don’t ruin our one good week of commuting coolio! Come back the next week when we are crawling anyway (and there are more cheaters)!

miwsParticipantSmitty, maybe Officer Cool Shades normally works 2nd or 3rd shift, goes to School and is normally in class in the mornings, is on spring break himself, and is getting some O/T. ;-)

waynsterParticipantHmmmmmm I think officer cool shades should look into this….lol at least he won’t be blinded…lmao

miwsParticipantwaynester, I’ve always like those “_______ When Flashing” signs!
I think there is, or at least used to be, one on 99 in SODO, directing drivers to use the lower bridge.
Makes sense, actually, as pedestrians aren’t allowed on the high bridge, and it would be extremely dangerous for any potential flashers. ;-)

SmittyParticipantMike, it’s something like that. Some sort of connection to the public schools. Maybe his wife & kids leave town (to the in-laws!) on break and he stays in town and pulls an extra shift. Who knows.
That said, we still have until Monday morning to see if my prediction is even correct!

redblackParticipantjeannie: the signs read “right lane buses only – right turns permitted” or some such, to reinforce what jan said. obviously you can’t tell a traffic cop, “well, i was going to turn right eventually…”
and not to hijack smitty’s rant (because he obviously doesn’t flaunt the bus lanes). but…
i understand everyone’s frustration with the bus lanes on alaska. i live nearby, and i have to navigate the triangle every day of my working life.
but are drivers intentionally violating the bus lanes (and right-turn-only lanes) out of spite? or are they merely ignorant? neither prospect is good, but if it’s the former, violators should know that their behavior is unpredictable at best, and can cause confusion, consternation, and crashes. and that goes for the bus lane on the jeanette williams memorial bridge, too.
if anyone reading this is such a driver, please knock it off.
but feel free to chime in and defend yourself. i’m sure we’ll be fascinated by your justifications. :)
