waiting at 41st SW and SW Admiral Way for 56 to downtown. Lots of westbound traffic at 5:30pm, plenty going east, also…two lanes both ways. Ambulance with sirens and lights on going west bound…woman in SUV going eastbound in inside lane with lots of room in outside lane did not move over, causing said ambulance to have to weave around her to get through (guess she was in her lane and more important)…and SHE WAS ON HER CELL PHONE…where’s a cop when you need ’em…

then..transfer at 1st and Holgate rush hour at 6pm, bicyclist in outside lane going northbound, not paying attention to traffic around him, weaving a bit, slowing the cars down…one hand on his handlebars…and the other hand HOLDING HIS CELL PHONE UP TO HIS EAR TALKING ABOUT WHO KNOWS WHAT !!!

it amazes me how obtuse people are, how selfish they are, how oblivious to their surroundings people are at times…

crawling back into my hole now :)

Jan – In the biz we call that ‘the burden of awareness.’

    Have fun with it.

    Erik: Nice. I like that.

JanS: I’ve been saying all along that they need to do what NYC did and have a one day crackdown on cellphone use behind the wheel. So for that one day driving with a cellphone to your ear would be a primary offense and reason for a traffic stop.

New York wrote a mountain of tickets and the one-day take for the City was in the low seven figures. Maybe Seattle could earmark the fines and divert the funds to our public school teachers. :-)

I went down to Tacoma and back by bus yesterday.

At one point I think on the way down, (not that it matters) I saw a car driver on their cell as we passed by on the surface street we were traveling. So, I decided to do a very informal check on the number of drivers doing so. Not an actual count, but more of a “just a few, alot, most”, whatever.

Surprisingly, I saw alot fewer than I expected. However I *did* see one guy either dialing, or texting, on I-5.

And Jan, another fun thing to do, and you’d probably see it alot at that bus stop, is to see how many drivers cut it real close when turning into a driveway in front of a bus, or crossing the intersection. I see it all the time, at the inbound stop for the 22, down here in front of McDonalds in the Morgan Junction.

Of course, they do it infront of other cars too, not just buses. ;-)

It would be a good thing if we could raise money for teachers in Seattle somehow. Regretfully the City has not too much powere over Seattle School Disrtict. Over the years there has been talking about the City seizing control of the district. It has happened in other Cities and justifiable by state constituion (?). For all of the bad rap that our mayor gets, he does strongly favor actions that help children be successful in school. And if he did dedicate a days worth of ticket revenue to the district’s teachers; people would whine about that too.

Christopher, in my estimation there is no, I repeat, NO phone call that important. If you’re a doc on call, get a blutooth. Other than that, it can wait 10 minutes. Most that I see are just chatting with a friend, it seems. I refuse to answer my phone when I’m driving;that’s what voicemail is for, and I’ll get to it soon enough.

Agree with Jan and Christopher. If you are that bored when driving that you have to chit-chat with your friend, then download a podcast and learn something instead!

Take heart, JanS. Wednesday while waiting for the bus at 26th and Roxbury, I watched a womam peel onto Roxbury from 28th, blasting through a ‘pink’ traffic light (closer to red than yellow), talking on her cell. About ten blocks north of there, our bus was treated to seeing this same woman pulled over by SPD, as she apparently had blown through a school zone while still on the cell. Our bus entourage calculated her probable fine at around $300ish. This must have dawned on her as well, as she was crying her eyes out. SPD makes a mint on the 20 blocks of Roxbury from 35th to 15th on weekday mornings–2 school zones and a bunch of clueless (or selfish) drivers. Not a weekday morning goes by that I don’t see a speeder pulled over.

Not only do the drivers who are on there cell phones need to GET OFF them unless there hands free – the people who ride the BUS need to get off them as well! I HATE it when someone on the bus is on there cell phone talking the entire time so loud the entire bus load of people riding with them hears there business. Should be a ban on using cel phones on busses, in stores, restaraunts, etc.

Peaches…I have no sympathy for the woman. She (and others) know damned well what they’re doing…

JanS…No sympathy implied. Just a little well-deserved justice as far as myself and my bus-mates were concerned.

That’s when the bus crowd should clap and cheer out loud – lol
