Does anyone know someone who might be able to give oboe lessons to a beginner? I have exhausted all of the usual searches and have come up dry. In the sea of wonderful West Seattle musicians, is there a double-reed player/teacher to be found? I know that none of the local music studios list oboe as an option.

I was fishing around for possible harmonica stuff and came cross this site https://takelessons.com/ I have not used it so can’t say if it is good or bad. You might also try dusty strings in Fremont, yes their focus is on stringed instruments but they seem to have a strong music community and you might find someone there. Good luck

mpento, thanks. I’ve tried all of the usual searches, including takelessons.com and all of the various iterations on that theme, as well as all of the local music stores. At this point, I think I need to find someone who actually knows an oboe/bassoon player who might have direct names.

I used to teach beginning oboe when I was in high school! I don’t play regularly now but I could definitely still help bring your oboe player up to speed to play in class until you can find a higher level teacher. (Assuming you’re looking for a child/teen) I have taught 5th-11th graders in a range of brand new to a wind instrument in 5th grade band to middle/high schoolers switching from flute and clarinet to help fill out their ensemble. I even got one of my 5th graders up to a 7th grade level and we had her sign up for solo/ensemble her first year! After I graduated and moved to Seattle she continued with my previous teachers in Olympia. I’ve played off and on in non-audition groups at UW and Boeing over the last 10 years though not actively in the last few as I focus on career things.

Starting oboe with help is critical, double reeds are so complicated and can be frustrating to not get the quick results the clarinet players get and be the brunt of all the duck jokes. (Been there!!) I played flute one year in 5th grade and switched in 6th grade as my elementary music teacher was a bassoonist and gave me private lessons during school to get the basics down and keep up with the “easier” instruments. Reeds are also another conundrum. What is readily available at local music stores are usually junk so there’s lots of double reed suppliers online where you can get higher quality reeds until your oboist learns how to make them (I never did).

Anyway I have a wealth of info on oboe resources online and some ideas in Seattle as well. Feel free to message me jihanke with the domain from that default search engine. I’m currently cramming for a professional credential exam on Wednesday so I might not be able to get back to you until later this week but I love oboe and would love to help however I can!

Yay!!! Thank you trickycoolj! You will definitely hear from me soon.

WSB comes through again! I knew that posting here would get results that ALL of Google didn’t manage to do. :-)
