JanSParticipantwatching the news here about the collapse of the Skagit River Bridge….will affect so much for so many…
National Bridge Inventory rated this bridge “Functionally obsolete” in 2010

clark5080ParticipantI think it was built in 1955 dang thing is almost as old as I am
May 24, 2013 at 3:57 am #790588
JanSParticipantlol…and we know how we feel at this age !
May 24, 2013 at 3:57 am #790589
JanSParticipantwait…are you saying we’re functionally obsolete?!?
May 24, 2013 at 4:05 am #790590
JiggersMemberMmmmmm….you guys do know King 5 reported one fatality. Now they don’t know. Well.. media sucks when an event like this breaks out because they don’t know and don’t have credible information. Time to watch a movie..

JanSParticipantjiggers…I listened to King 5 until 10pm…and I didn’t hear them say that. Latest word was 3 survivors

miwsParticipantFox is saying that Obama set this up, as I-5 is the westernmost route in and out of Canada, and the only means of travel, of any sort, this far west.
They believe Obama’s intent is to bankrupt our economy, by severely hampering trade and tourism between the U.S. and Canada.
Oh, Fox also reports that Obama was driving the rig that allegedly caused the collapse,

sam-cParticipantwas watching kiro7- they’ve done investigations into bridges lately and have a lot of data.
from listening to them, ‘functionally obsolete’ just means narrow shoulders, lanes etc. it wasn’t structurally deficient. there’s a difference.
like, when all these apartments are built and occupied, the west seattle bridge is going to be ‘functionally obsolete’

JoBParticipantthe sad truth is that you can’t put the maintenance, repair and replacement off till tomorrow that you should have done today without consequences.
When the interstate bridge failed in the twin cities, everyone was quick to find reasons why that bridge was not like all of the other bridges that were limping along with a hope and a prayer.
We made excuses instead of massive investments in infrastructure and are paying the price now.
if we don’t change our national policy and insist on investment in our nation, this will only get worse.
May 24, 2013 at 3:41 pm #790598
sam-cParticipantor make sure that trucks know how tall they are and whether or not they are going to hit the bridge structure they are crossing. not everything needs to be turned into a political debate
May 24, 2013 at 4:03 pm #790599
JoBParticipantsam-c..
LOL.. so you are perfectly happy using bridges that are designed and maintained to be safe as long as nothing goes wrong?
I’m not.
Nor am i going to buy into the story line that investing in our nation’s infrastructure .. you know updating and maintaining those things we mutually depend upon to keep us safe.. is a political issue.
i believe this is a common sense issue.
but then i don’t hold hands and whistle in the dark where predators lurk either
May 24, 2013 at 5:39 pm #790600
JanSParticipantsadly, this bridge would still be standing if that truck had not hit the top of it. From late news reports, a truck heading in the other direction from the culprit didn’t give him enough room and forced him into the girders. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more. Wonder if the trucking companies will have to cough up some cash for the repairs.

sam-cParticipantI say a prayer every time I take the viaduct, but at least that one won’t fall due to bad drivers/ bad truck drivers, just a giant earthquake.
in other cases, I’m MORE confident in older construction than I am in new construction. 520 bridge pontoons ?
but making it a political debate is as out of place as one of the kiro 7 reporters’ comments regarding one of the thousands of spectators on the side of the river… she made a point about one individual-how he took out a prayer rug for evening prayers, and took photos of the broken bridge with a big zoom lens.. the comment was completely ridiculous. I couldn’t believe she actually said that on air.

Driez206Memberanyone know when the WS bridge was built, i hear its a similar type of bridge
May 24, 2013 at 6:53 pm #790603
seaopgalParticipantLast night was bad for all the channels … too much speculation, not enough facts. But I did enjoy KIRO’s news ticker (crawler at bottom of screen) that the Skagit River “damns” would be adjusted to reduce water flow.
