velo_nutParticipantReally? Proves you don’t have to pass an intelligence test to be in politics.
A state representative in Washington has drawn the ire of cyclists everywhere with recent comments he made regarding the sport.
In an e-mail to a Tacoma, Wash. bike shop owner about a proposed bicycle tax, State Rep. Ed Orcutt came to the conclusion that cycling is bad for the environment because people exhale an increased amount of carbon dioxide when they’re pedaling on a bike.
“Also, you claim that it is environmentally friendly to ride a bike,” Orcutt wrote. “But if I am not mistaken, a cyclists has an increased heart rate and respiration. That means that the act of riding a bike results in greater emissions of carbon dioxide from the rider. Since CO2 is deemed to be a greenhouse gas and a pollutant, bicyclists are actually polluting when they ride.”

JanSParticipanthow do these ignorant people get elected.? Yes, he took it back, but the fact that he said it in the first place astounds me…

miwsParticipantSeems like Rep. Orcutt was expelling some bodily emissions.
And not through his mouth.

datamuseParticipantIf he really felt that way about it he’d be trying to shut down gyms, fitness centers, and sports teams too…and I guess I better give up running as well as biking!

TanDLParticipantI agree with you, Mike. A lot of hot air coming out of the Rep. Just imagine how he destroys the environment every time he gives a public speech.

SonomaParticipantCan someone please send this to The Colbert Report or The Daily Show? They’d make mincemeat of this idiot.
P.S. Has it always been the case that the biggest fools are the ones who wield power? Have elected officials always been such an embarrassment?

Jeff HParticipantYes, this spread like wildfire over the weekend in the “people who use bikes for transportation” community. I’ve had lots of good laughs (and discussion) with people.
.
I’d bet Rep. Orcutt won’t be re-elected, and am guessing Cascade has put him on the “do not endorse” list.
.
I’m glad that this has gotten national (and international) attention…it just continues to remind us of the fact that bicycles are becoming a viable “mainstream” form of transportation everywhere. So maybe Rep. Orcutt did some good with his ignorant comments! ;-)

SonomaParticipantHa! I googled Orcutt Washington, and the first thing that came up (after an ad for Cialis) was an article about Ed Orcutt in the Huffington Post, with many others following.
Eddie is a Republican from Kalama … I wonder if he opposes taxing tractors. Oh, and his embarrassing attempts to…ahem..backpedal…on the bicycle quote only land him deeper in the ditch. But, yeah, with all the publicity he’s generated, he should be appointed the bicycle world’s (dis)honorary Spokesman.

clark5080Participantthere are plenty of wacky quotes from politicians of all parties
Henry Waxman on Environmentalism: “We’re seeing the reality of a lot of the North Pole starting to evaporate, and we could get to a tipping point. Because if it evaporates to a certain point – they have lanes now where ships can go that couldn’t ever sail through before. And if it gets to a point where it evaporates too much, there’s a lot of tundra that’s being held down by that ice cap.”
