beachdrivegirlParticipantI didn’t say workers are bullies. I said long shoreman. At my exemployer our warehouse was next to their office. They were threatening and rude to our companies employees. Parking in our loading zone and threatening our employees with guns when asked to move. And everybody was afraid of them. So yes I think they are bullies.
February 22, 2015 at 12:57 am #821774
dobroParticipant“I think $15/he is too high.”
So you’re not really THAT sorry for the poor minimum wage workers that you’d wish them to have a living wage. Ok then.
February 22, 2015 at 2:21 am #821775
beachdrivegirlParticipant$15 is extremely high. And overall will hurt small businesses. I think increasing the wage less and creating more subsidies for healthcare D&C is a better long term solution. This isn’t about minimum wage. Longshoreman make six figures and took away jobs from the minimum wage. Just like most management…. Difference is management has six figures in student loan debt that won’t be forgiven or subsidies because they are “rich”. But yes let’s keep crying for these poor long shoreman.
February 22, 2015 at 6:00 am #821776
JoBParticipantbeachdrivegirl..
so you think that we taxpayers should subsidize the employment costs of businesses?
because it isn’t just small businesses that employ minimum wage workers.

JoBParticipantBeachdrivegirl..
“Difference is management has six figures in student loan debt that won’t be forgiven or subsidies because they are “rich”.”
i so wish that hadn’t caught my eye as i blinked out…
you think we should subsidize management too :(

texasMemberNow there’s a good point. It’s the pickers in Eastern Washington who really need a union. Maybe BDG is worried that the Mexican laborers who live in shacks in Manson, Mansfield, and Entiat will become bullies for a living wage. And if anyone is threatening you with a gun, call the police. These stories are not true. BDG doesn’t understand that many longshore workers are educated. Some have advanced degrees; some are published authors, poets, artists, musicians. They also have children, and they send their children to college. “Management” is not the only class of people with student loan debt. The outright stereotyping of dock workers, as if they were cartoon characters, is childish and immature, and frankly, evidence of gross ignorance.
And BTW, Dobro: great articles, thank you.

JanSParticipanttexas….hear, hear !
February 22, 2015 at 2:31 pm #821780
beachdrivegirlParticipantCalling me a liar? That’s near a personal attack. And not allowed here. And yes they are true. I have zero reason to make that up.
And yes management aren’t the only ones with SL devt but they usually have phased out of forgiveness programs etc.
And reading comprehension it’s your friend. I said subsidies for healthcare etc not businesses. Yes generally speaking I think healthcare, education, and childcare costs could all use more subsidies.
February 22, 2015 at 2:33 pm #821781
beachdrivegirlParticipantWow and talk about stereotyping. Implying all ag workers in wA are mexican and live in shacks. Where is a puke face when you need one?
February 22, 2015 at 3:15 pm #821782
beachdrivegirlParticipantAnd bragging about shutting down the west coast?
” of the ILWU,” said Dave Arian, who worked at the docks for 44 years and now runs the union-supported Harry Bridges Institute, a nonprofit that educates workers on labor history. “A small workforce with the ability to shut down the entire West Coast.””

JTBParticipant“Yuck” The perfect closure to what has become a futile attempt to have a thoughtful discussion.
February 22, 2015 at 6:39 pm #821784
texasMemberYuck?
As in Mr. Yuck?
Oh, ha ha ha ha
thanks for the laugh :-)
you GO, girl!
Keep Eastern Washington safe from bullies!
Before we part,JTB, thank you for your commentary. It’s been enlightened and enlightening, thoughtful and considered, and much appreciated.

JTBParticipantFebruary 22, 2015 at 8:52 pm #821786
JoBParticipanttexas.. please come back for more thoughtful discussion.. although many try to derail it.. it is always appreciated.
JTB.. JB.. wake.. dobro..
you too ;-)
i can’t tell you how much the wide ranging discussions here brighten my day
February 22, 2015 at 9:40 pm #821787
SmittyParticipantAnd thank you BDG!
No matter how hard you try the liberal echo chamber always get the last word. Keep fighting the good fight!
There are more of us than you think…..
February 22, 2015 at 11:30 pm #821788
JTBParticipantJoB, No, I’m not ready to give up on the WSB Forum. I have, however, concluded it is futile to continue this particular thread when every attempt to clarify or pursue an issue is met with a strange assertion in yet another direction that reveals little more than a predictable bias.
February 23, 2015 at 2:38 am #821789
JoBParticipantJTB
i agree..
but it was interesting while it lasted..
smitty..
if we reduce all discussions to the liberal and conservative argument regardless of the validity of either we miss the opportunity for solutions to common problems
February 23, 2015 at 6:41 am #821790
JanSParticipantto reduce any discussion to complaints about those damned liberals is so not cool, smitty. Why does every damned thing have to be an either/or ? Politics aside, some people feel one way, some another, and some in between…and me being a Dem or you being a Repub, or him being a Libertarian, or Green, or whatever he/she is sometimes hasn’t got a damned thing to do with anything. Why can’t we just be, and appreciated everyone for our diversity, and ability to add to a good discussion.I sometimes don’t get the digs.
And, since this topic is solved for now, I vote with JTB about time to calll it a wrap on here. But that’s just me.
February 23, 2015 at 6:47 pm #821791
SmittyParticipantSorry Jan, just responding to the JTB/Texas love affair(211-214) that was a direct jab at BDG.
Maybe I read it wrong – which can happen.
February 23, 2015 at 10:04 pm #821792
beachdrivegirlParticipantThanks snmitty! I’ll try to stick around. Although this board definitely leans heavily toward the left.
February 23, 2015 at 10:17 pm #821793
JanSParticipantSmitty, maybe I read things wrong or missed something…but I don’t remember either texas or JTB bringing up politics. Now, the fact that they disagree with BDG is OK with me. She disagrees with them…and that’s OK with me, too. But I don’t think any one side or another POLITICALLY was brought up until the end of the convo by you and BDG. If it leans heavily towards the liberal side, please remember you’re in Seattle, and the whole city leans that way, too. It is what it is.
Now, everyone leave work (or home), and go out and enjoy that wonderful sun before it goes away :) Great week, everyone !
February 24, 2015 at 12:54 am #821794
SmittyParticipantFair enough Jan, makes sense.
Enjoy the sun as well – wish I was golfing (or more like, attempting to golf!)……
BDG – WSU Republicans need to stick together. Talk about an extreme minority in this town! That’s us!
Go Cougs!
February 24, 2015 at 4:47 pm #821795
JoBParticipantSmitty..
BeachDriveGirl’s declaration that i would like nothing more than to prove her wrong is about as wrong as a statement can get… but it sure set her up for the pity vote.. didn’t it?
I poke holes in arguments Smitty.. not in people.
My greatest wish is for an argument that makes us all work very hard to poke those holes…
those arguments result in common grounds.. the playground where progress is made.
February 24, 2015 at 4:51 pm #821796
JoBParticipantTo make my intentions perfectly clear…
i applauded those who hung in there to make a fact based argument acknowledging the complicated nuances of the topic.
Name calling is not a valid argument and does nothing to advance conversation.
There are two sides to every labor negotiation.
it’s unfortunate that both sides are never equally reported.
