    A Well Kept Secret!

Un-intentionally, Kennedy Catholic High School, Burien, Washington is keeping a huge secret!

The secret is that they are highly effective at helping “children with exceptional learning needs” successfully navigate the educational, emotional and social challenges of high school. Kids who might have been left out, or felt out of place, find a welcoming environment that cultivates their strengths rather than reinforcing their weaknesses and insecurities.

Many of the middle school kids we have worked with over the years get under-educated and tossed to whatever fortune may come their way when they go to high school. Some of the schools do a stellar job with kids needing additional help; others let them swing until they become part of the shameful dropout statistics that are plaguing our educational systems across the country.

Jim Mesick, Director of Advancement at Kennedy Catholic, was generous with his time as he shared with me the features and benefits of the “Blessed Mother Teresa Program.” The curriculum is named after Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who shared her talents with all who approached her for aid and comfort. Based on her example Kennedy has constructed a curriculum and support system to ensure a good shot at success for kids, irrespective of previous achievements.

One student said it so well.

“Mother Teresa is one of the best programs that I have ever had a chance to be part of. I’m proud of all the hard work that has paid off, and I’m thankful to be graduating from Kennedy Catholic.”

In addition to the academic rigors practiced in the Mother Teresa Program the core group of teachers, attached to the program, assist and promote students to take an active part in one or more of the sixty club activities available to the student body. The proof, in this particular pudding, is that over 75% of students in the program move into the mainstream curriculum prior to graduation.

Since 1968 Kennedy has provided a competitive education to a widely diverse population.

How many schools can claim that nearly 100% of all students graduate on time?

How many schools can show that 98% of their students attend college?

How many schools offer 40 college credits through on-campus classes offered in conjunction with Seattle University and the University of Washington?

How many schools serve eleven nations students in an International Curriculum that also offers housing in an old seminary building adjacent to the school?

Kennedy, quit keeping secrets!!! You’ve got a great story to tell!!
