Hey, does anyone know if the Duwamish is choked with salmon like it was last year? i took my kayak up last year and there were salmon jumping all around me. People were fishing all around me – in boats and on shore. I would like a repeat of that experience but someone mentioned to me that nets are across the mouth of the river so there were few salmon. Anyone know about this?

The only thing I know is yesterday afternoon when I walked the trail, I did not see any nets, at least where I was between T107 and Lafarge. Compared that to the week before when the nets seemed to be all over the place.

I haven’t seen any jumping fish at all yet…I’d be curious what other folks know.

The fish are further up the river by now. Your a couple weeks late.

You caught the pink salmon run last year. They return to the Duwamish River to spawn only in odd numbered years. So you’ll have to wait until late summer – fall of 2013 for the next run.

Went up the Duwamish yesterday anyway, despite it being an off year for the pinks (thanks AlkiMac). It was still a nice paddle. Only went as far as Kellog Island this time. There were about seven nets out across the river in places. The first one was serving as some kind of buffet for some enormous seal lions. It’s amazing to me how just fifteen minutes from home, in what seems like a cesspool of an area, you can still see so much wildlife – bald eagle, heron, kingfisher, mergansers, geese, cormorant, mallads, osprey, seal lion, harbor seals, killdeer and i’m sure a few more that i could have identified with binoculars.
