CMPParticipantI haven’t heard anything but would support a road diet on 35th 100%. I noticed that 35th is the only major arterial in West Seattle that doesn’t even have sharrows which is shocking since they seem to be everywhere. That’s a clear indication to me that SDOT doesn’t give a hoot about safety on this street.

dhgParticipantI remember a lot of people complaining about the change on Fauntleroy, that creating single lanes would slow traffic. I think it is working very well. I’d support doing the same to 35th. It’ll calm traffic and make pulling in and out much safer. Pedestrians would also benefit as it is much easier to cross 2 lanes instead of 4.

WSHCMemberReviving this thread. Anyone have any updated news or rumors on this issue? I live on 35th and would be interested in getting a little more involved in calling attention to the lack of walkability/ bikeability of the street in order to get something done.

WorldCitizenParticipantLight rail/ Street car down a new median. Add one lane each way plus bike lanes each way. Keep it this way all the way from the triangle to Roxbury. I’d even be up for it running down Roxbury to 4th Ave SW.
Calms traffic and even takes some of it off the road.

amaliaParticipantThe City of Seattle Capital Improvements Projects 2009-2015 schedule has nothing in the way of projects or funds allotted between now and 2015 for 35th. Not sure if that means nothing will happen, but I think it means nothing is shovel-ready. I think the road diet rumors were tossed around by residents a while back.

redblackParticipantaround the time that they rechannelized fauntleroy, someone asked that question to the city. i seem to remember SDOT saying that the volume of cars on 35th passes the threshold for what a single-lane road can handle, so there would be no road diet considered on 35th.
you can probably email the SDOT director directly from their web site, though.

kgdlgParticipantI believe 35th is classified as a major arterial and could never be subject to this kind of road diet. It is the mst main thoroughfare in west Seattle, after all. We had a dog hit and killed on 35th last year so know all too well how crazy it is. I love the SPd speed traps they seem to be the only thing that calms it.

WSHCMemberSome preliminary Googling suggests that 35th is within the threshold to be considered for a road diet. The threshold is 25,000 vehicles/day, and 35th is currently around 22,500 vehicles/day.
I’m going to try and dig up some more concrete data.

anonymeParticipantI live on I-35 south of Rox, and I can tell you that reducing traffic to two lanes does little to “calm” speeds here. Seven years ago, a SDOT study showed around 7,000 vehicles per day on this stretch, which is also restricted to 30 mph rather than 35 mph. We had a radar sign installed, but the regular speeders quickly figured out that there’s no camera attached.
I still say that the only solution is enforcement. I’d be all for speed cameras; they are a more effective and cost-efficient alternative to police, who have better things to do.
