My Qwest/CenturyLink modem just died. Wondering if I really need to buy their $100 modem? Also considering switching service any new recommendations would be great.

    Thank you.

Comcast would probably get you faster speeds (not sure if CenturyLink has fiber anywhere in WSea), and a Motorola surfboard sb6121 modem is about $68 on Amazon or Newegg, saves $7/mo rental fee from Comcast. If you’re not looking for crazy speed Comcast has unadvertised economy internet that you can ask for but might not be speedy enough if you do a lot of Netflix or movie streaming.

    Pennidog,

Have you checked with cLink? It should be under warranty, we got ours replaced no charge…..

trickycool… thanks for the advice about Comcast, we don’t stream movies, just need to be able to check email, fb and download music.

jwws… I did call clink but my modem is from 2007 when they were qwest. When I questioned about specials they say there aren’t any right now and I would need to buy a new modem at full price.

I think they also have DSL modems at places like Best Buy, not sure about model since I’ve never had DSL before.

Here’s my experience from setting up a CL line in Minnesota: Purchased a new DSL modem at Best Buy. Could not get it to connect. Call CL and run through settings. CL not at all helpful. I’ve set up a few dozen DSL modems before but this just will not work. After a full day lost, I pick up a CL-branded Zoom modem and it works at first try. I would like to learn the trick to get the first one working but it was not worth the time.

For here, I have the Motorola modem hooked up to Comcast and it works very well.

We had CenturyLink fiber when we lived in the High Point area. It was expensive and not the greatest. We now have Comcast and while they we’re a p.i.t.a. to get going, we’ve had zero problems with them and we’ve got pretty good speed. Not sure if this helps…
