On 7/3 I stopped by the Westwood QFC on the way home from work, exhausted in part by a sleepless night due to fireworks. I used the self-checkout, and got $20 cash back. At least, I thought I did.
Today on the way home from work I stopped at a different store. I looked in my wallet for the $20, but it wasn’t there. I couldn’t imagine what had happened to it; I could clearly visualize it there next to the lottery ticket. Finally, I realized I must have left it in the machine the day before. Twenty bucks is a lot to me, but I thought it was surely long gone.
Just for the hell of it I called and spoke with the manager, explaining that I knew there was probably a snowball’s chance that the money had been returned. To my surprise, he himself had noticed it after I left, retrieved it and put it aside for me. Wow.
I am so very, very grateful to this gentleman, who usually presides over the self-checkout area. I forgot to ask his name, but will post when I learn it. A rather humbling reminder that there still are decent people out there. THANK YOU!
