Louisa WagnerMemberI am planning on home-schooling my little girl. I would like to find a West Seattle based home school group. Can anyone refer me to one?

WSBKeymasterLouisa – our son went to school @ home via an online public-school operation for 2 years, but we never got involved in anything organized. Seattle Public Schools has a homeschooling support center of some kind; also, you might consider checking with Vera at Village Green Perennial Nursery, who is a homeschooling advocate http://www.villagegreenperennialnursery.com and might know where to point you, if you don’t get the answers here within a day or so.

MousePotatoMemberYou might look into WAVA. We tried it for a year and were very impressed with the curriculum. Our middle school-er decided she wanted to switch to public school so we left after a year but it was a very solid at home educational program. They also have many social activities as well so your child doesn’t go stir crazy… :-)

Louisa WagnerMemberThank you for the information, MousePotato and WSB. I was surprised I had such a hard time finding a group in West Seattle. Gas is quite expensive, so I am trying to stay close to home. I heard from someone who happened to run into one of the home-school group mother, but she can’t remember who it is. Apparently this group has a Chinese program and had just lost their teacher. I am a native Mandarin speaker and am really hoping to get connected with the group. I love teaching kids Mandarin.

Laurie97MemberDear Louisa,
I have 2 sons, ages 7 and 14. My 14-year-old has been studying Mandarin for the past year at Denny, and I’m not sure he’ll have the opportunity to continue in High School. Would you have any interest in giving them a weekly lesson in Mandarin? I’d be very interested – if you are. Thank you!
Laurie

Holly ReillyMemberI’m also looking into homeschooling my daughter. She just turned 5 last month. I’m researching all of our options, including WAVA, but right now I’m leaning toward a mixed curriculum and lots of library books.
Mostly, I just want to make sure my girl has lots of opportunity to play and learn with other kids. I’d love to touch base with other homeschoolers in West Seattle. You can reach me through sweet.pea.passion@gmail.com :)

dgordonMemberHI there everyone,
There’s actually a fairly big homeschool group here in West Seattle, and one of the best resources where you can check out the families AND the classes and resources is at the Southwest Community Center. We’re finishing up the spring session of classes, but most activities take place all day fridays, so come on down to the back/lower part of the community center, and just introduce yourselves to any mama there. Classes and activities (indoor gym, outdoor playground, swimming classes, and so much more) happen from about 9-3pm. Other than that you’ll want to join the SHG group which has ALL the resources and families for the greater Seattle area. Anyone can tell you more about that if you stop by SWCC any friday. Or you can email me and we can chat more offline. Danielle

flumpkinMemberMy family is moving to West Seattle in late summer or early fall. We are considering a virtual academy for our 4 children. Are the SWCC and SHG activies open to virtual academy students as well as traditional homeschoolers? Thank you for the info, Danielle.

SybilParticipantA little late to the discussion, but I wanted to answer your questions: Yes, the SWCC classes and the SHG are open to any homeschoolers no matter what capacity they are homeschooling in.
Since you are in WS you may want to join the Yahoo group for WS HSers:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WestSeattleHomeschoolGroup/
The classes at the SWCC are called the Family Learning Program and although they are primarily used by HSers, they aren’t restricted to HSers. The yahoo group for that is:

flumpkinMemberThank you very much for that information, Sybil. I will check out the groups.
