PibalParticipantIn spite of never opening an e-mail I did not recognize or clicking on an unfamiliar website, I was hit yesterday with the CryptoWall 3.0 virus. I have no idea how it got me. This virus encrypts all files on your computer and then requires a $500 Bitcoin ransom to get the unlocking encryption key. Trouble is there is no guarantee you will regain access to your files once you pay the $500. Some do, some don’t. Devastating virus…
In my case, I caught it while the encryption was in progress. It still nailed about 30% of my files.
So if you have been procrastinating your backups, don’t. Backup regularly and often on a device separate from your PC.
(And yes, lest you think this is a quietly-offered post, I am still seething to the nth degree…)

transplantellaParticipantEverything is being hacked.
We’ve had our credit cards hacked 3 times in the last 3 months and had to cancel the accounts and get new cards each time. One of the new replacement credit cards was hacked before we even received it! Somebody in the UK put a charge on a new credit card less than a week after the new account was generated and before the card ever got delivered to our mailbox.
In recent news, 10 million healthcare records were hacked at Blue Cross Blue Shield –
And then there is this good news too,
More than 80% of healthcare IT leaders say their systems have been compromised –
And then of course the US government’s Office of Personnel Management was hacked this year for the personal information of more than 25 million people –

Ain’t technology wonderful? The hackers are winning by miles.

JoBParticipanttechnology is wonderful
or at least some of it is…
but we are going to have to figure out better safeguards..
if it cost the credit card companies enough..
they will get it done
right now the losses look smaller to them than the investment in our financial security
