AimParticipantMy dad has cancer. Pancreatic.
He’s been going through very intensive chemo and is having a really bad time with his skin and nails cracking and crumbling from the chemo. The calluses on his feet are falling off, leaving cracks in the skin and making it really painful to walk.
Yes, any old nail place on any corner can do a manicure and or pedicure. However, with chemo he has no immune system so we can’t take the risk of going to a place that doesn’t autoclave or disinfect absolutely everything. Meaning the chairs, things people touch, EVERYTHING. Additionally, with medical bills mounting at a cost of $15k/week or more, there isn’t any extra money in the extended family to pay for this. All of us are funneling everything we have into trying to pay for the treatment.
I heard something about Gene Juarez possibly having done cancer patient mani/pedis in the past, and I know they are great about disinfection.
Do any of you know definitively of anything like this?

hammerheadParticipantTHis will be difficult to find a place that autoclaves chairs. As for the tools they use I don’t know of any place that autoclaves theirs tools. If they do they will be expensive. My nail lady works out of her house. She disinfects her tools but can’t do that her chairs.
I am sorry about dad. Good luck

EmmyJaneParticipantGood luck and I’m sorry to hear about your dad- you might want to contact Nail Time on California… they are really great people there and it seems like something they’d go out of their way to do…

AimParticipantThey don’t need to autoclave the chairs (is that even possible?) but disinfecting would be important. I know Gene Juarez does it, I just don’t think they’d do it for free. They’re not open this late or I’d call. They’ll be on my list tomorrow.
Unfortunately, I’ve been to Nail Time before and they re-use things like files. It’s fine for most of us, and they’re very nice folks, but it’s not an option for someone who’s going through chemo.
Thank you both for the ideas – please keep them coming, as every idea triggers another idea, and maybe I’ll come up with something.
Anyone who’s willing to add him to their prayer/thought/candle-lighting/etc list, I’d certainly appreciate it. So far he’s beaten some seriously long odds, and we just need his luck to hold a little longer.

miwsParticipantAim, I don’t have any advice on your main question, but would like to say that you and your family are in my thoughts.
Take Care,
Mike

WSBKeymasterMe too. My mom fought that, also beat the odds a good long while. It can be done. I will put this out on the FB page – there might be somebody in our network there who knows but doesn’t read the WSB Forum. (I’d send to Twitter too but as you all probably know, Twitter is down, apparently thanks to hackers.)

celeste17ParticipantI go to the nail place in Jefferson square (can’t think of their name right now). The owner is Ming and I would bet if you asked him he would do this. His wife I believe is a nurse so she would know all about sterilization. Maybe someone reading this will be able to come to your dad so he doesn’t have to go out. What is his name so I can include him in my prayers.

addParticipantI know there is a salon or organization that provides a day of free spa care to cancer patients. I googled it and found this – not exactly what I was looking for but maybe they can help or at least point you in the right direction? All good thoughts to your dad and family.

AimParticipantThank you all for the input.
Tracy thanks for the FB mention – I appreciate it. He’s beaten a lot of very long odds so far. The stage at which he was diagnosed, he never should have done this well for this long.
Those who asked for his name to pray for him: please, yes, say a prayer. Say a hundred prayers. I’m not going to post his name. It’s a fairly unique one and he’s intensely private. Thanks for the prayers, and thanks for understanding.

CeeBeeParticipantAim, I’m in a place and mindframe to “pay it forward”. I have some contact numbers from the Swedish Cancer Institute and we should be able to find a safe place for your father to get some fancy toe time. I’m just noticing that the PM feature isn’t available now(?) so if you are interested, post and then we’ll figure out how to connect.

WSBKeymasterAim – I’m sending you CeeBee’s address.
