WSBKeymasterWhere and when? National Weather Service verifies such things. The weather isn’t anywhere near that turbulent in this vicinity but if it was something she saw from a distance – I’ll scope for NWS reports. – TR
update, nothing reported on NWS site (including “local storm reports”)

AnonymousInactive“Cold-core funnel. What are those? They’re like a tornado’s little brother in that they look like tornado/funnel clouds, but aren’t nearly as destructive.”

JoBParticipantgood sleuthing JT

PatrickKeymasterThere’s a whole range of these all of which stem from warm and cold air mingling. At the low end there’s the dust devils and on the other there’s tornados.
Believe it or not I was trained to be a tv weatherman.

mellaw6565MemberPatrick -How does one train to be a tv weatherman? Do you have to have a degree in meteorology (sp?)? Do you have to have your own blue screen to practice?

JoBParticipantplease patrick..
give us the inside track on the secret handshake:)
i think everyone wants to know what kind of training produces a good tv weatherman.. because i have seen some who really knew their stuff…
and some…. well.. i suppose it’s like any other job:)

DunnoParticipantAs most of you may of heard, it was a Wall Cloud that swept over us. 60% of the time, these produce tornado’s. Yes, funnel clouds were in the air and may have touched down. The most likely spot was near Black Diamond. I’m a weather guy wanna be too. I did watch it come in from a good vantage point, but did get under shelter once lighting strikes were within 200 ft of me, and funnel clouds in a wall cloud are usually right behind. How do I know how close the lighting was?
My ear drums are still ringing, with no chance to start my five second count after the flash!!
This was a very rare event for us, but not the first. I remember some years ago watching a funnel cloud go over my Gatewood home. This one was verified by the NWS, and may have touched down
briefly near the Kenny Home. I’ve also seen a couple of waterspouts on the Sound.
Good news, no one that I know of was hurt in yesterdays freak weather event.
BTW, during lightning do not hold a metal golf club up into the sky.

JoBParticipantDunno…
i agree with you.. that was one impressive wall cloud… i watched it move over the sound from gatewood hill.
last time i saw one of those we were running for the tornado shelter in St Paul:)

DunnoParticipantMellaw, FYI,
Every TV Weather screen I’ve been around has been a green blank wall. Maybe blue works too, that I dunno. I do know as a weather man you are pointing to the blank wall. TV monitors are normally set to each side. Many have never been inside a TV weather studio. Most of the wx forecast is on the camera’s tele-prompter, which for those that don’t know is like a 15 inch computer screen. The forecast is then read by Patrick in his plaid suit.
This by the way is just above the camera lens, hence it looks like Patrick is talking to you!

JoBParticipantDunno..
Patrick chose not to be the guy in the plaid suit…
but yes, that is pretty much how it is done.
however, i have to say i have met some weather men who earned the meteorologist title… and did far more than just read their evening forcast.
how do you think i learned about wall clouds?
August 27, 2008 at 2:15 am #635402
DunnoParticipantFYI,
Of our local head weather people, only Steve Pool of Komo TV does not have a degree as a meteorologist, but Scott Sistek the man behind the curtain at 4 does.
Here’s to better weather soon! Cheers!
