RarelyEverParticipantHi all –
I have a bit of a strange question; does anyone have an extra car that I could “borrow” (or, rent, as I’m willing to pay a resonable fee) for next week? I’m in between cars and need one for work but don’t want to be rushed into buying a used car that may not be right.
I live in Gatewood and work in Tukwila (12 minute commute), and I would only drive it there and back. If I could find someone who would be willing to “rent” me their car it would really take a huge weight off my shoulders…
You can email me at dohertym at gmail dot com & thanks for reading. Go WS!!! :)

ItsForrestMemberIf you’re willing to pay a reasonable fee, have you checked the price of renting a car for a week from a regular car rental place? you may be surprised how affordable that can be if you call around to the different rental places.

I guess I assumed the car rental places would be too pricey, but I’ll have another look.
Thanks! :)

jissyParticipantI agree with ItsForrest… certainly worth a try especially on Priceline.com, the name your own price feature. I’ve put in some ridiculously low offers that have been accepted before. If nothing else comes available via the Blog it’s worth a shot (although you might need to head out by the airport for pick-up/drop-off)!

snaParticipantYou can let someone borrow a car, but if you rent it out, you will likely not be covered by insurance if your renter has an accident.

hopeyParticipantSeconding the Priceline recommendation — I’ve gotten some great deals. You can also check with your insurance company and even your credit card companies to see if they offer any rental car discounts. I use USAA insurance, and they have discount deals with all of the major rental companies. Be sure to also check prices on downtown locations versus the airport.

skeeterParticipantI’m pretty sure Priceline only does airport rentals. You will pay a very significant tax at the airport, plus a concession recovery fee. In my experience, the non-airport locations are far, far cheaper once you figure in taxes and fees.
I’ve looked into the “renting my car” thing. My insurance policy specifically prohibits renting my car out. I’d be very careful.
I have an upcoming Hertz rental this summer. Once week unlimited mileage for $132 including taxes. That seems pretty affordable to me.

NikiSParticipantAlso try Zipcar, which is pretty much tailor-made for temporary car needs–they do daily, weekly, monthly fees (think cheaper than regular rentals, but that probably depends); I know there’s a Zipcar lot in the Junction: http://www.zipcar.com

zachrMemberI have a rental car from Priceline right now that I picked up downtownand I am paying well under 200 a week for a SUV right now. To rent one from the airport I would have paid more than the rental fee in tax.

skeeterParticipantOh cool! Priceline does non-airport rentals now? That is excellent news. I am positive that they used to do airport rentals only. Glad they got that changed. Thanks zachr.
