Slow down driving N (up the Admiral hill from the bridge to the junction). If the flashing sign post shows you’re speeding (over 30 MPH), it may be too late. Traffic cop running radar from his motor bike got me today. First speeding ticket ever (after driving 26 years). Watch out!

there is a solution to this…don’t speed…it’s that simple. I really don’t know why it’s such a problem. The car is not in control of you, it’s the other way around. I know there’s a gripe about the posted speed limit….but it is what it is…

What Jan said! It’s posted that way so folks living off that section of road don’t get creamed or killed. Use to live on Hanford there–nightmare.

When were you cited? Rush hour? Or early PM?

The system works! Admiral Way residents sent an urgent request today for the Seattle Police Department ADRT unit to enforce the speed limit on Admiral Way. Thank you SPD! The speed limit is the speed limit, it’s not a “suggestion.”

Chookie, you ever seen the two kids who cross in that stretch after school? There’s a reason it’s 30, and you’re doing a favor only to those who choose to disregard the safety of others. So NOT cool.

Wow. I’m really impressed by the perfect-sounding, self-righteous drivers of West Seattle. As mentioned, first ticket ever (26 years)…not like it was a D.U.I. or that I’m a child-endagerment. 3 kids were in the car with me and I used this as a teaching lesson for them, too. Ticket was just after noon. Safety is one thing, city revenue another.

Chookie, where do you live? Do you have children, or pets, or do you ever walk anywhere? I might just want to race down your street now and then.

It blows my mind that anyone would think they were doing some kind of public service by making an announcement as to how to avoid the consequences of dangerous, irresponsible behavior.

Post #1 was moronic, but Post #9 may just have beat it.

Now you brag that 3 children were in the car with you, as if it’s OK to speed as long as your own children are in equal danger. But that’s not enough; you then claim that this was a “teaching lesson” for them, too. Meaning, I’m sure, that you explained to your children how idiotic your behavior was and that you completely deserved the ticket you just got? Oh right – I’ll bet THAT happened.

    You ARE “a child-endagerment”.

As far as safety vs. revenue goes, perhaps it would be better if you spent the weekend in jail instead. Maybe then you’d get the message, instead of coming on the WSB to proclaim your entitlement.

Trapster is a great app. All you do is tap the button when you see traffic enforcement (or traffic issues) and it alerts all other drivers before they get to the area (who have the Trapster app, of course).

Not that I ever speed. But it’s good for collisions alerts and other stuff too.

I applaud Chookie. Why? First, the whole point of patrols and tickets is to get people to do the speed limit. If a post on the blog accomplishes the same thing isn’t that just as good? Either way people start driving safer. Second, I saw no attempt to blame SPD or the speed limit being too low – Chookie accepted responsibility which seems rare these days. I saw the motorcycle cop about 11:30 as I went down the hill, I flashed my lights at my unknown neighbors and friends to alert them – some slowed down, some didn’t. Does that make me a bad or unsafe person too?

I hope Anonyme is just having a bad day because those posts are very mean spirited and that’s not how her posts typically come across. Deep breaths.

2 Much Whine you bring up a very good point. I always flash my lights on/off to warn oncoming traffic of the police.

Not sure everyone knows or understands that “code”.

I’m wondering if Anonyme does not drive (perhaps a biker or pedestrian only individual). Most, if not all drivers, have unintentionally exceeded the speed limit at times. My post was intended as a warning and reminder. Is this forum often this heated and adversarial? I appreciate the passion, but not the personal attacks…Jail for a first time speeding ticket, really? Half the driving population would be jailed if it were so.

Chookie, I agree with you! And I appreciate the warning. I’m sure just about everyone posting here is a careful driver, but it’s a good reminder. And thank you, 2 Much Whine and Smitty, for being reasonable and not flying off the handle. Logic and common sense can prevail!

I’m pretty sure they were out looking last night, too. I was going up Admiral Way about 11:30 pm or so, and there was a car with parking lights on at one of the few streets coming out from the right about 1/3 of the way up. When an opening in traffic happened, car did not pull into traffic…just sat there. If it was, they are definitely paying attention

I learned my lesson about 12 or 13 years ago. I was in a hurry, not paying attention, stopped at 37th and Admiral going 40 mph towards the hill. And he was definitely NOT Office Friendly :-

Thanks Chookie for going out of your way to remind your neighbors to stay safe and within the law.

I always try to remind visitors unfamiliar with Admiral Way about the frequent speed traps there. In particular you need to watch for the speed traps between the Monday to Friday rush hours. Also, be mindful of speeds across the West Seattle Bridge and the Viaduct.

I think 30 mph is too slow for the lightly populated uphill stretch of Admiral Way — people travel faster on almost every main arterial that I can think of. But I don’t make the rules, so I try to abide by them.

Chookie, in response your question “Is this forum often this heated and adversarial?” in post 15: Yup!

Word to the wise, don’t ever bring up a topic involving an off leash dog or throwing a bag of dog poop in someone else’s garbage can. You will get crucified…

It’s really just the same 3-5 people that yell the loudest, and not surprisingly you annoyed at least 2 of them! As soon as I saw this it was easy to tell what the responses were going to look like. Trust me, this forum is not reflective of any neighbors I have met here in West Seattle. Everyone I have met has been kind, friendly and open minded.

Nothing wrong without posting about speed traps. I received a speeding tickets on the WS bridge several 4th of July’s ago, and let the commentariat on WSB know. The warning serves as a reminder to all of us. Several posters seems to be upset with the OP about warning about the speed trap and/or posting about it because, I assume, speeding is bad. The cautionary tale will encourage others to slow down, if only to save themselves the coin on the ticket and their insurance rates. I fail to see how this is a bad thing.

I am glad to hear that officers are doing patrols on Admiral again.

every time i drive the speed limit there i get a whole lot of attitude from drivers wanting to pass me.

Post #22..yes…I’ve had people pass me going both up and down Admiral Way, going at least 40-45 mph, sometimes faster.. I will admit, I was happy with the 35MPH limit that was there previously. But I refuse to speed up because someone is riding my bumper. I remember one commentor on here a few years ago stating “My car wants to go faster than that”… like the car is in charge, has a brain. I think people just don’t think of slowing down after they come off the bridge. It will be a never ending topic…

thanks chookie! always nice to get a good heads up about speed traps. remember to flash your highbeams at oncoming when you notice an officer running a revenue generator in the name of “safety”

also, dont just pay that ticket and let it screw up your insurance rates for years.. find an attorney to represent you (usually they charge 300$ or less). Mike Sheehan out of Bellevue has gotten 95% of my infractions dropped.
