Door to Door sales people

Hello – we wanted to see if anybody else in the area had experienced a young man going door to door selling magazines subscriptions to help support his education. He spent a good 20 minutes talking to my husband, pulled out a laminated sheet out of his back pocket and even showed by husband an alleged check from a “neighbor”. We did not give him any money but was curious if anybody else had encountered him and if it was legitimate or a scam.
