JiggersMemberWhat is worth to buy at the Dollar Tree for a buck and what should you pay for more in another retail store?

JoBParticipantjiggers..
the dollar tree in White Center has smaller portions of food in the cold case for a buck..
is it the best dollar per pound value?
it depends on the item…
but both the portions and the price are accessible
and everything i have tried has been decent quality

me on 28th Ave SWParticipantWorth buying: hydrogen peroxide and isopropol alchohol, bars of soap, scouring powder (like Comet or Ajax), clothing pins, travel size meds(Tylenol, Ibuprofen, antacids)Sunday Seattle Times, tortillas, many of the canned/convenience foods, spices, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving cream, disposable razors. Can do better at store on sale: shampoo, conditioner (even Suave is not as watered down).

mommymParticipantWith teenage daughters we LOVE the Dollar Store. We go through cotton balls & q-tips like mad. Also my girls can find hair rubberbands and bobby pins in big packs so much cheaper than the drug stores. We also LOVE getting really pretty gift bags that cost $5+ in drug stores and birthday/other cards are 2/$1, not to mention a huge assortment of helium balloons for all occassions.
One of my daughters actually just got an ipod car charger that works great and a couple pair of ear buds too.

MarleyBMemberForbes.com recently ran this article listing out what’s really a “deal” at the Dollar store, and what you’re better off buying elsewhere- it’s worth a read: http://www.forbes.com/sites/investopedia/2012/04/02/are-dollar-stores-really-a-bargain/
Quick synopsis:
Buy at the dollar store: disposable items (paper plates, napkins, etc), pregnancy tests, seasonal items, kitchen ware, books, random items (masking tape, paint brushes, garden seeds)
Buy elsewhere: toys for kids (lead/safety concerns), batteries, food, electronics, medications, electrical cords (often they’re not UL approved), toothpaste)

ForestParticipantI buy extra pairs of reading glasses at the dollar store. Though plastic, they will magnify and focus just as well as the reading glasses selling for $15-25 a pair at pharmacy drug stores.

miwsParticipantThey usually have VO5 Shampoo, and (separate) conditioner, that usually only gets down towards a dollar at Bartell’s and such, when it’s on sale.
I think it’s usually a buck and a half or more, now, at Bartell’s.
This is the standard size bottle, and my last couple of visits there, they had the bonus size with, like, 20% more.
I, personally, would avoid buying off brand shampoos at a dollar store, as around 15-ish years ago, I bought some at a dollar store downtown, and consistency seemed as thin as water.
