We are thinking of buying our own cable modem box for internet/phone instead of renting. But I hear some Comcast city franchises don’t allow you to own your own. Renting is ridiculous and I want to buy one. Anyone already purchased one and if so, what did you buy?

I rent mine, but I believe there is a list somewhere on the xfinity/comcast site of approved modems and/or how to check the one you want to buy to see if it’s acceptable.

We used to rent but I believe we were paying $8 a month. After paying $8 a month for an old modem that hasn’t been updated in years we figured we were paying quite a bit for it! (do the math) So we bought one for $80 or so and swapped it out. Husband brought it back to comcast and they took the $8 off our monthly bill.

I think that if you plan on having internet for more than a year you should just buy your own. Typically modems are hearty and don’t often go bad. I just bought one about 4 months ago and use it with Comcast and it works great.

If you have more than one computer be prepared to have a router for other computer or to use a wifi connection as this is just a modem and most ISPs these days give you a modem/router combo.

You’ll have to give Comcast some numbers off the modem so they can activate it but that should be it. Here is the link to the one I’m using: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825122015

I bought mine at Costco. it was cheaper than Amazon. Some of the Amazon comments had good setup instructions

Motorola Surfboard, I’ve seen them at Costco recently. $80 paid for in 10 months. Won’t work if you have the telephone service thoigh, that’s a different kind of modem.

I just stumbled on this deal and remembered this post. The same modem we got at costco and it includes a nice new wireless router for $87!

I own my modem and have no regrets. I ended up picking up a Motorola modem on Amazon that was on the list of compatible modems that Comcast published.

Comcast charges $8 a month to rent a modem. So long as you plan to stay with Comcast for a year or longer, then purchasing a modem will ultimately save you money over the long run.
