matthewdarlingMemberLast night as I was serving at the Highstrike Grill, I had a table of 4 young guys come in, maybe aged 17 to 20. they were super polite, had appetizers, dinner, and dessert.
the bill came to $94.20
as soon as I turned my back to serve a table, they bolted.
Really???? people still do this? who raises their children to have such disrespect?
what sense of entitlement are we instilling in our youth?
Thank you to the management of the restaurant who did not hold me responsible for the bill, I’ve worked in places that would have.

WSBKeymasterI hope it was reported to police? It’s not disrespect, it’s stealing, and that’s a crime.

JanSParticipantoh, Matthew, I’m so sorry to hear this. Hope you remember their faces.Betting they’ve been in the bowling alley before :(

maudeParticipantWhat JoB said. My brother is in his 40’s and, quite frankly, it wouldn’t surprise me if I found out that he does things like this.

DPMemberDo tell, maude. What else wouldn’t you be surprised at your brother doing?
I wish I had some words of encouragement for you, but having a brother of my own, who is now in his 50s, I’m afraid I must tell you that things only get worse.

mpentoParticipantI wonder if the police would figure it was worth the effort to take some fingerprints or DNA from the dessert spoons. I’m sure people who do that kind of stuff will show up in the files sooner or later. On the other hand if it is any consolation maybe you helped out some desperate people. My brothers would never do anything like that although the middle brother does have a tendency to complain when the service is poor. I lean toward the philosophy of never mess with the people who are bringing you your food. One time in London myself and a friend were seated but we were waiting so long we decided to leave. As we were at the door the hostess asked us to wait a moment and in about 30 sec there were 2 or 3 young (and scrawny) server guys hurrying towards the door. It was amusing how they checked their haste when they saw me and my buddy. Having to put up with that stuff after the bad service we were not amused. We left without incident.

matthewdarlingMemberwell, i will attest to my own level of service. JanS JoB and Charlabob can also vouch.
i took pride in not treating them different because of their age.
the manager and i decided not to call the police. i have had this kind of behavior happen more in bars where people tend to leave without paying due to impaired judgement.
i hope that they needed it and will not spend anymore negativity on being mad.
the universe works in wacky ways. just reminds me what a cool establishment i work in and what awesome people i am surrounded by…’nuff said.

GenHillOneParticipantThat stinks! What time, Matthew? I know two in that demo who bowled yesterday. 1) they didn’t eat last night and 2) if they had, they would NOT do this, but they certainly recognize a lot of faces.

pigeonmomParticipantWow. How sucky. Sorry that happened to you, lil’ buddy.

matthewdarlingMemberGenHillOne… was about 7pm
they weren’t bowlers…came in through grill and ran out the same way.

KenParticipantDang bud. the menu does not have prices?
http://www.highstrikegrill.com/menu
What do those numbers stand for? variables?
I drive by there a couple of time a day so I have tried twice. Each time the place was closed at the times I need food.
Maybe I will try weekend breakfast but I will have been up for 5 hours by the time the place opens.

charlabobParticipantYup, Matthew is the best and the HS food and service are wonderful. Today the Bob stopped there to eat (and bowl free) and brought me home a bacon waffle — lovingly hand-packed by Matthew. HS feels like home; it’s work figuring out the schedule, etc. We actually went before Matthew began working — he’s the maple syrup on the waffle :-)

GenHillOneParticipantWell, the time was about right, but no recollection of the “perps” here. But we did our part and ate at Highstrike last night! The grilled cheese is divine too :P

365StairsParticipantAny eatery business must balance this D&D risk and decide to implement an designated ordering & pay ahead station (as far away from the entrance as possible)…The only risk after a customer pays in advance is being disgruntled if the food or service is poor…and they may want their $$ back…
May 9, 2011 at 6:44 pm #723830
JustSarahParticipant365Stairs, will you explain why you say a business “must” do as you suggest? It sounds as though you are blaming the restaurant and/or server for the criminal tendencies of others. “Must” a retail establishment post security personnel at its doors, too?
May 9, 2011 at 7:11 pm #723831
KBearParticipantIf I have to pay in advance at a restaurant with table service, the service is already poor. I’m glad they don’t do it that way.
May 9, 2011 at 9:16 pm #723832
365StairsParticipantSarahScoot – It was a general business management comment…If you open a service oriented business with daily public consumers – you (the owner) have to evaluate the level of risk associated with your potential clientelle (based on lots of current and historical data). It’s about Risk & Consequence…
Perhaps Highstrike has never had a dine & dash before now…so it’s low risk and heavy remediation is probably not needed…but if this is the (x)th time in say a year…and the amount of $$ lost is unacceptable to continue to write off and insurance claims are eating into profits (where food costs go up to future consumer) – then additional measures are needed…(many options…including Security Guards)…
It’s just common business practice to evaluate these things – even just to say you did…a business plan where investments are taken in would require it.
All that said – any and all remediation efforts introduce their own set of issues and all new threats to evaluate…
Risk & Consequence…

JoBParticipant365stairs…
the real risk with the order up front model is that it does limit what people order and cuts revenues… especially in a place like the High Strike that serves both appetizers and desserts.
one of the reasons for employing that friendly waiter is to help entice diners to think more about the menu… and therefore more about food choices.. and choose more.
Diners seldom order either appetizers or desserts from an ordering station.. but sit them down at a table and bring them a drink and anything is possible.
