hammerheadParticipantThere is a film about documenting this horrible practice on domestic and wild cats(lions and tigers) and how it was banned in certain areas in California.
It is going to be in Seattle.
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 2ND AT 7PM
GRAND ILLUSION THEATER
1403 NE 50TH ST
SEATTLE, WA 98105
I think this is very important info for any one who is thinking about adopting a cat now or in the future.

JanSParticipantLeo was declawed when he was found, outside, fending for himself. Yes, it was good for my furniture and carpet, but he never did like me touching his paws very much…I had such a hard time understanding how anyone could declaw him, and then just throw him away :( And, he never, ever did the kitty walk thing, the bread kneading :(

BreezyParticipantA cruel and inhumane practice :( I love my cat, claws & all!

mehud7ParticipantThank you for the link hammerhead. Thank goodness it says it is an “inspiring story” of one woman’s quest to ban the procedure equivalent to chopping off our fingers at the first knuckle. Declawing has been banned in eight California cities and several other countries around the world.

anonymeParticipantHorrible, horrible practice. I wouldn’t trust any vet willing to do this to an animal. All you have to do is clip your cats nails every few weeks, just like you do your own. Eventually they get “stubby” and not sharp enough to snag furniture.

Driez206MemberI agree, it is horrible and was not pleased with my mom’s decision to do it to her cats >.< When my cat was young and clawing everything we tried those softclaw things that are kind of like acrylic nails, well they looked adorable on her(black and white kitty, with pink nails)but she hated them, so we don’t even do that now, just clip em once in awhile. Plus furniture, and items you can replace, not so much with your cats claws!

FilbertMemberWho are the Vets that perform the operation? Is there no “do no harm” oath for animal doctors?
September 5, 2013 at 2:41 pm #796793
hammerheadParticipantIt is ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. period.
Actually the question would be what vets do NOT preform this mutilation.
I can sadly admit even South Seattle vet does. :((
Yes they do educate as best as they can but once again the human makes the decision to be cruel to the animal, as every one has said we can not control humans.

LenaParticipantI’m a vet who has never performed a declaw in my 14 years of practice or in vet school – never will (and I have been in western medical practice before turning to acupuncture). There are other vets out there that will not do them as well. And there are vets that will do them only after trying to talk people out of it. I wish there was more of us:-(

GrazieParticipantJohn Bradshaw, author of “Dog Sense” just out with the feline counterpart “Cat Sense” – raises also the possibility of Phantom Pain for a cat who has been so mutilated…

dhgParticipantSo cool to see these posts. Can Seattle become the first city north of California to ban it?
September 7, 2013 at 1:23 am #796798
hammerheadParticipantdhg,
I would love to that is for sure, money is everything.
Hell we are still trying to pass a s/n bill and we can’t get that passed either.
None the less, more than anything I just hope it educates people about it.
September 8, 2013 at 5:16 am #796799
2krazy4wordsParticipantit’s all about awareness. like Lena said, some vets do their best to educate and offer alternatives or flat out refuse. people STILL do not understand what is entailed. that’s why there is the push for people to see this documentary – to see what is REALLY is and why it is ILLEGAL in many countries.
there is even the option to “crowd-source” a screening … details here: http://www.tugg.com/titles/the-paw-project-movie
get enough friends to join the movement and the organizer gets 5% of ticket sales – would be a nice fund raising op
