HomerParticipantAnyone know of a relatively close place to go cross country skiing, preferably with kids?
We went to Snoqualmie years back but had to take a chair lift up to a certain trail and then it was fun but we missed the last lift down so had to ski downhill with cross country ski’s. Not exactly fun and not doable with kids.
I thought Hyak had some cross country skiing but 1. Is it with fun scenery or boring?
2. Where do you rent skis? Snoqualmie?
Thanks all, trying to get into the winter feel!

trickycooljParticipantHayak does have XC skiing and rentals…. Just no snow. I believe Crystal also has some Snowshoe/dinner programs so they might have XC but I haven’t checked. I think there are also trails off of the many “sno-park” areas but I’m not sure where they have info on those. When in doubt, give REI a call!

rwParticipantWe enjoy Hayak, Cabin Creek, Stevens Pass, and other XC ski areas on the west side of the Cascades. Sno parks are the way to go, in my opinion. They are generally quite beautiful, well maintained, and more affordable for families or groups than private ski areas.
The state forest rangers maintain an office near the Summit West exit for Snoqualmie where you can buy a day pass and get guidance on the best ski areas for your needs and the day’s conditions. (They also do guided snow-shoe walks that include loaner snow shoes; it’s a good deal and nice introduction to snow shoeing. You have to make advance reservations for these.)
Friends rented skis from REI or other ski shops before heading out to the mountains with us.
Of course without snow all options are moot.

HomerParticipantGreat ideas…any idea if there is a place in WS fro x-country ski rentals? REI is pretty out of the way (yeah, I’m that much of a drive hater!)

Mountain to Sound Outfitters on Alaska SW have rentals and can probably recommend some places to go this season as I don’t think the sno-parks around Snoqualmie have much accumulation.

annaeileenParticipantI learned to XC ski in Leavenworth at the golf course and by Sleeping Lady and it was easy and family friendly. Lots of small slopping hills. I was there at the end of Dec and it was snowing when I left so they might have more accumulation now. I have XC skied at Stevens for years because it has so many miles of groomed trails and goes from easy to hard. My first adventure by myself was at Hyak and I ended up taking my skis off and walking because it was so steep! I have learned how to snow plow and slow myself down but I was new and it was scary and I haven’t been back. I have heard there is good XC skiing around Mt. Rainier but don’t know the conditions this year. Sadly we need more snow.

trickycooljParticipantSecond M2S Outfitters! My season ski rental has been patiently waiting in the garage next to the snowboard. Just (im)patiently waiting for snow. Everyone get your snow dance on!!! :)
