There is a petition happening to stop this practice.

This is has been brought up frequently on WSB under many different types of posts.

I hope you are willing to take the time to sign the petition.

I’m glad there is finally a petition. There should be NO pets for free or for sale on Craig’s List. This practice has allowed puppy mills and backyard breeders to flourish, at the expense of the lives of many innocent animals. The “free” animals – especially pit bulls – are often used as bait for dog fights. It’s time to stop this. Animals are not merchandise to be bought and sold, or discarded the moment the ‘new’ wears off.

HH, thanks for posting. I’m going to sign immediately, and possibly write a letter to CL as well. In the meantime, I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to flag the pet sales on CL. Sales have always been prohibited, but not enforced unless flagged. It used to be that I would find a few (less than 10) every visit. Now it’s often close to a hundred. Keywords: pup, puppy, puppies, purebred, purebread (not kidding), kitten, cat – then try specific breed names.

Wow, I had no idea. Call me naïve but I just didn’t know that was a way for criminals to get animals and it makes it so easy for people to think they can make $ becoming a breeder and advertising for free.

I signed it and will follow up on the issue and flag on CL. It’s frustrating enough to me to see people perpetuating the cycle of buying a purebred or trendy puppy or kitten and then getting tired of it and filling up shelters but the sheer horror of using animals for bait and torture is sick, wrong and heartbreaking.

Thanks for sharing HH and anonyme

annaeileen, thank you for getting involved.

I just flagged some more ads on CL. They included a wolf pup for $800 (legal in WA, if you can believe that) and pitbull puppies in trade for guns. Also the most expensive (and prohibited) pet ad I’ve seen on CL – an English Bulldog puppy for $2,000. It seems to be getting worse.

Like most law abiding citizens, I had no idea this type of thing was going on. I do have a question for those in the know; why would someone shell out $2000 for a puppy that was going to be used as bait? We have always adopted shelter dogs, but I have had close friends who purchased a beagle puppy from a breeder because they wanted a puppy and wanted to know its parents.

The problem is twofold – breeders and criminals. Bulldogs are growing in popularity so there are more people breeding them to make $ but I didn’t know that wasn’t allowed.

I also know people who buy purebred kittens and puppies and it’s their legal choice (I have my own opinion on perpetuating the breeding and buying cycle) but CL needs to get out of adverting animals.

Hopefully the petition will draw enough attention so CL stops. I have had a few friends sign it and I will also write letters to CL.

Breezy and all others: getting from a breeder and ‘knowing the parents’ does not guarantee a healthy animal (or even ethical, safe and loving circumstances). I’ve had folks come and adopt a ‘good ol’ regular’ rescue/shelter cat and kittens from me and numerous rescuers I know due to getting tired of being burned by a breeder. Even if they have ‘papers’ doesn’t make them any healthier than a solid rescue pet. It’s supposed to be the companionship and love they give, not the advantage of the ownership of a certain look. I’ve also had many people on my job tell me the same things about dogs and puppies from a breeder. They got them(with a big song & dance) and all it was, was one major health problem after another(of course, when you breed over and over and over again!). They paid more in Vet bills than they did for the pet. Did you all know that many breeders will euthanize a kitten or puppy or a whole litter if something is wrong with them, or if they came from a non-intended mating, or they just don’t look perfect?? If it means $$$ to them and the baby isn’t what they want to sell, many die. I’ve had my Vet tell me that most regular cats and dogs are way healthier and sturdier than the breeders version. Humans that make the animals work($) for them need to go hang at the shelters for a week or a month and see the misery they contribute GREATLY to. Not being preachy.. just real life. Or real misery and eventual death for the animals. (Breezey, I know it’s not you, just getting the word out there due to your friends statement). In essence, there IS no guarantee in a bred baby, just the show-off factor. Breeders.. no need to respond, it’s all greed. Until ALL the shelters are empty, THEN you can speak up for your ‘profession’.

Oh, btw; In the past, I’ve had bumper stickers made up that say:

    ‘STOP ANIMAL AND CHILD ABUSE

SPAY AND NUETER MEAN SELFISH PEOPLE!’

… wish I could sell a zillion of them, and use the $$$ for rescue work, rescue work is financially straining. We are always cleaning up after messes other ‘humans’ leave behind.

    4th: I support spay & neuter ESPECIALLY for humans…!

Breezy, sorry if my post was confusing. There are actually several issues with pet ads on CL. I wasn’t suggesting that people are buying $2K puppies as bait, but cheap or free animals can – and are – used for that purpose. I’ve also heard of labs (as in laboratories) taking free kittens or puppies for research.

Many ads on CL are fronts for puppy mills. Many others are just unscrupulous backyard breeders out to make a quick (and tax-free) buck in the flesh trade, oblivious to animal suffering and the crisis of pet overpopulation. It’s heartbreaking to see ad after ad with flimsy excuses as to why this animal is being dumped – usually after being purchased without a thought to the future, and only to satisfy some human’s craving for instant ego gratification. Only a lucky few end up in forever homes; those of us who have been involved with rescue know only too well what happens to the rest.

An enforced ban on all pet ads on CL will not eliminate the problem, but will make it much, much more difficult for these practices to proliferate.

Twenty years ago Ron Sims supported a bill to ban all non-licensed breeding and require spay/neuter of all domestic animals. It’s high time this policy was implemented, even if considered only in terms of the tremendous financial cost of slaughtering tens of thousands of innocent, abandoned animals each year.

    anonyme: Right On!

(any way to get the city and county to re-introduce the bill? A bunch of us need to start getting politically active again??

Also, the NO to de-clawing bill??)

I have mixed feelings about CL. We have two dogs, one from the humane society and the other rehomed from an ad on CL. While searching CL I found that a number of breed rescue orgs use it and private parties who really want the best for their pets. It seems that somewhere between an all out ban on advertising pets and do nothing there should be a middle ground.

I signed it even though like Tom K. I have a CL re-homed dog…I actually have 2. Both free, one’s former owner visited my home first to ensure I was who I said. I’ll miss this resource, but there are many others and if it helps put an end to people mistakenly giving the pets away as bait dogs and cuts into breeders business – I’m all for it.

I am not going to sign it, because there’s just too much vitriol in the messaging here that accompanies it. Offering that if folks passionate about this might want to reconsider the approach to better win folks over.

What struck me initially, though, is: I’m assuming CL will take down such ads when you report them? So doesn’t that already mean they disallow it? Or should the petition actually go into how CL should go a step farther, with key word/phrase searches or something, which will bring on a whole new set of issues? Just using my tech brain here to weigh community-monitored vs. perpetual design and coding to keep up with the shysters …

Experimental labs like UW get their animals from craig’s list and other “free” pets sites.

So there is a lot more than pit bull bait or snake food(mind you I know snakes have to eat too).

UW has one of the largest animal experimenting labs in the United States.

Puppy mills aren’t going away because they can’t post ads on CL. I would imagine a bunch of awesome animals that need to be rehomed are going to end up in kill shelters. It’s true you see people with stupid excuses for dumping their pets but that doesn’t change the fact that they realized they shouldn’t have that animal in their care, and that they are looking for a person who can better carefor that animal. Why would you take this easy resource away?

You get a reduced fee for pet registration for spray/ neuter and I would love to see it mandatory but I would never support legislation that only let licensed breeders have an exemption. Who decides what animals are worth breeding? Death to all mutts, you must have papers.

The only money that should be paid for an animal is the cost of spay/neuter and shots/medical expenses. They are not commodities to be bought or sold.

To those who had a good experience, good, but sadly in my line of rescue 99.99% the stories from craig’s list are not good.

Here is a perfect example probably one of the worst. We all know when a human tortures animals one can only imagine what and when they will do some thing a human.

I had flagged about 30 brand new “puppies” ads on CL when I came across the post linked below. I was so shocked I had to stop and post this.

Someone is advertising dalmation puppy coats. No, not coats for puppies – COATS MADE OUT OF PUPPIES. Are you effing kidding me? Is this legal?

That has to be a (bad) joke – ala Cruella DeVile. There is no way it would be legal – I think it’s an early Halloween prank.

Ms. Sparkles, I think you’re probably right. And it IS illegal. But a very reliable source just informed me that many of the furry Asian import toys found in gift shops – the ones made of real fur – are actually made of cat and dog fur. So ya never know.

It’s not safe to assume things like that are jokes. Most might be but what if it’s not? Better to flag it.

I admire Hammerhead and Anonyme for taking the time and the heart to view ads and help animals (among the other things you do). I regularly give $ to animal organizations and I have fostered a cat and there are so many more things I could do but I don’t know if I have the strength to view ads or research what is really going on and not become depressed. I will follow up with CL and from there see if I can do more.

Here’s an excellent example of what we can do to mitigate animal abuse through craigslist: http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/pet/4155483293.html
