My favorite part of the Holidays is getting a Charlie Brown tree – maybe it’s that I was raised Dutch (aka: why on earth would you spend over $10 on a tree that is dead?!) but I would love any feedback on fresh trees that are not over $20. Don’t have the time this year with a newborn to head up to cut your own $10 trees in the mountains.

    Any place you recommend? Thanks!!

I saw some 3 foot trees with stand included in front of Admiral Safeway last night for about $15. They were called Elf Trees, super cute. Almost got one since I usually just put a 4ft artificial tree on my corner mantle but it’s seen better days.

We haven’t been out tree-shopping yet but if by CB tree you mean kinda straggly – we have in the past purchased untrimmed Douglas firs at West Seattle Nursery.

I don’t know if our lone tree-lot sponsor this year, Holy Rosary, has untrimmed Doug firs, but please be advised their last planned day of the season is Sunday. We have a list of tree lots on the Holiday Guide page, but it’s basically just where to find one, not granular details.

    Good luck!

We miss Chubby and Tubby for those TRUE Charlie Brown trees, $5 or so each, years ago …

You just brought back a flood of memories, Tracy. I used to get those trees from C&T every year after college. The only reason I had a tree was because they were so cheap.

It got to be a tradition so much that I bought them even when I could afford something nicer. I would see the same folks every year or so. We’d have a laugh because some of them could afford to spend more but couldn’t justify it to themselves either. I think I lost one girlfriend over it? (OK, that must be what I told myself.)

And don’t get me started on the $15 Levis and Converse All Stars… ;-)

Yes! Burien Bark’s tree lot (at the old Herr Lumber building at 1st and 160th, known as Five Corners) has them. Herr always use to have them, and as they disappeared from the West Seattle lots over the years, we started going there. Herr is closed now, but when they agreed to let Burien Bark use their space, one of the conditions was that they carry the unsheared trees, because the family knew so many people depended on Herr to have them.

It’s not so much about the straggly as about the unsheared, natural look.

But in case you mean cheap and not just “straggly” looking trees, the “Chubby and Tubby” trees are still for sale at 175th and Aurora. They aren’t $5 anymore, but they’re still cheap AND straggly.

About 40 years ago our family had a true “Charlie Brown tree”. My son took his Boy Scout ax and went with his uncle tree hunting. Brought one home about 4 ft. that had barely anything on one side. His reasoning was “well we put one side to the wall anyway”. Looked fine when decorated. The kids were happy. Our family will never forget that tree. One of those good old Christmas memories.

as for us, for the second time in our 20 years of owning this hovel, we might have a home-grown tree. We noticed at some point during the year that a small evergreen – I think Douglas fir – is growing in the narrow south “side yard.” We have to go take another look. It’s been four or five years since one turned up in the front “border” and was thereby converted into the official holiday tree …

Tracy – I love that. My Mom did that a few years ago. gmabetty – what a funny story. It’s always those trees that you remember.

My whole childhood we bought at the grocery store lot from a little Dutch man. All year he would not speak Dutch all year and when my parents would come in he would get out the thermos and we would have strong coffee around a little space heater before walking out the the $5 tree. He was such a part of our lives for so many years – it’s nice to have traditions that mean something.

Do you know the song about memories? I can here it in my head but that’s it.

I had to give up a real tree some years ago because of allergies but also gave up the mess. I loved the smell of them. Every year I’m reminded of past Christmases, good thoughts.

We’ve drifted from original thread. My daughter has bought trees same place for so long that they gave her a discount this year when she said she couldn’t afford one. Still some caring people out there.
