redblackParticipantrecently bought an HD tee vee. i have comscat digital starter package, but don’t want to spend the extra $8/month for HD. instead, i invested a couple of bucks at radio shack and got a coax splitter. i ran one side to the comscat set-top box, and the other straight into the tee vee. now i can watch local channels (plus the corporate canada channel) in HD, as well as all of the basic cable channels in non-HD. or i can switch inputs and watch the cable box programming in 480.
hey, it’s better than nothing. and it’s relatively free. great for watching NCAA games in HD on CBS, for example.
but what i discovered on the straight basic coax is an extremely bizarre channel at digital 117-5. it seems to run nothing but bad – and i mean awful – movies, without commercials. i watch for as long as i can stand to, waiting for some kind of call sign or any hint about its origination, but i often don’t have the attention span.
the programming is seriously twisted bad. these aren’t B-movies. they’re like E-movies. like the janitor cleaned up the editing room and decided to moonlight at making movies.
does anyone know what the hell this channel is?

redblackParticipantthe phantom channel, 117-5, appears to be the community station for tukwila. evidently their government is too boring for television. (just kidding.) woke up at 1 a.m. and it was broadcasting construction road closures for some southerly city in king county.
nonetheless, whoever is running that station has a weird sense of humor. i just wish i could find their programming line up.
if you have the means, i suggest watching it at least once. it might become a cult favorite.
or you might end up on the tukwila city council. who knows?

PatrickKeymasterThe channel is run by a guy in Kent who provides public access programming for the cable company so that they can meet the needs spelled out in the public utility charters from the smaller cities to the south of us.

redblackParticipantthanks, patrick.
how and where did you find that info? if you don’t want to compromise the programmer’s privacy in a public forum, WSB has my email address(es). you’re welcome to use it (them).
no complaints or intent to harass or anything; i just want to know the names of the movies he’s showing to fill up air time – and to suggest that he publicizes his play list on the intertoobz. funny stuff.

PatrickKeymasterWhen the Seattle City Council came to SSC to take public testimony the guy got up and talked about what he does. The Seattle public access channel was scheduled for deep cuts and he said that if the city wanted to put the public access channel out to bid he’d certainly send one in as he could run SCAN for far less. I don’t remember his name, but he talked about how he provides the access requirements for Tukwila, Kent, and Renton.

redblackParticipantyes, thanks, ken. i just discovered a great way to watch “democracy now!” and now i can find out where they get all of those weird, bad movies.

KenParticipantIf there is a studio imprint or an actor you recognize, you might be able to narrow down the identification.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_in_the_public_domain_in_the_United_States
Public domain films can usually be broadcast for free unless they contain copyrighted music.

redblackParticipantactually, the puget sound access site has the programming list, so i can highlight the name, then right click it to search google.
gotta go. Hercules Against the Moon Men is on later, and i got stuff to do before then.
