I will fully admit that I am cheering on the Officer that has been ticketing drivers who abuse and defy the bus lane restrictions. My question is this now, why do I still see drivers abusing this daily. Either you disregard the signs coming off Admiral Way on-ramp to cut over to the 99 lane. There is also the reasons I have been seeing tickets almost everyday these last few weeks, is that drivers are in the Bus Lane well over the climax of the bridge. Why do you continue to drive illegally? I saw 3 people pulled over today, and one lady that almost hit the officer while speeding in the Bus Lane.

These are not shortcuts to avoid traffic. You should be ticketed. Stop driving in any lane marked Bus Only.

Probably a simple cost/benefit analysis in their minds. The cost of the ticket is outweighed by the benefit of the time they save. I agree with you however, I dislike like it when people drive in the lane and hope they get tickets. I think it makes me more mad when someone merges after the white line to get onto I-5 north.

All I can figure is that people know it is a possibility at this point and for whatever reason decide to take the risk.

Maybe they are late for work and will lose their job.

It could be that people try and use the entire lane to merge (rather than merge immediately) yet get to the top and nobody let’s them in? It would be worse if they slammed on their brakes, imo.

Igonorance is not an option at this point.

That said, it still drives me crazy that we don’t have the option to take the least congested road because we have to pick 99 or I-5 BEFORE we can see congestion (despite all the traffic cams, seeing is believing). It goes against common sense. We should be able to at least change lanes – although I can see how that might get very subjective.

Yay Smitty! On this point we can agree. It strikes me as insane to expect me to remain in a line for 99 when traffic is barely moving. A quick move to the left when traffic allows takes one to 1st or 4th and no harm done.

oh, dhg – you’re not going to be too popular around here with that sentiment, though I agree with you 110%

Dhg…no one is saying you can ‘t do that. What they are saying is…do it before you get to the solid white line. :)

I think I’ve said it before somewhere else, but my way of dealing with it (I work downtown), is I ALWAYS assume 1st ave or 4th ave will be faster. The viaduct lane is deceiving and I’ve noticed because it gets back up and slows down all the time, it’s faster to just deal with the lights on 1st and 4th ave. I don’t take the viaduct anymore unless I actually have to..

I do agree though that if the bus lane started just a few feet further I think it’d be easier to make a decision than just blindly deciding..

I could be wrong but I think the reason they drew the line where they did is because the line of sight is vert short when one is cresting the hill. In other words, if people were allowed to chose which lane to get in after the crest, there would eventually be people sitting with their blinker on and along would come a semi or bus, from the west side of the hill that can’t see the vehicle waiting to merge, and WHAM-O.
