DBPMemberGrows to 30 feet and produces gorgeous black colms (canes).
I’ve got a patch of this that can be dug into and now is the time. If you want to come over and dig some rhizomes to start in your own yard, be my guest. I’m offering this to one or two people who will raise the bamboo in their own yard. It’s not for you to give/sell to someone else.
You will need:
â–º A strong back
â–º A sturdy, sharp-bladed shovel
â–º A container to hold a moist, one-foot square root mass
â–º At least an hour of your time to dig it up
â–º A place to plant in your own yard
Ideally you will have read up on bamboo to learn how to grow this species. I highly recommend that you put in a sturdy plastic barrier around the plant. I highly do NOT recommend container planting.

shed22ParticipantBeautiful! For as long as I’ve been in my home, I have dreamed of black bamboo in the side yard. I am not in the position to make that move now, but I envy one who is! Such a great donation!

smokeycretin9ParticipantI too have and love black bamboo. I was wondering if you have Bamboo Mites? Most black does around Seattle. I know mine does, but its still healthy.
April 26, 2013 at 11:20 pm #788842
DBPMemberBamboo mites: yes. Any P. nigra around here has some of those. However, mites are like any endemic plant ailment: the healthier you can grow the plant, the less of a problem pests will be. The healthiest stands you’ll see are at a professional grower’s because those guys know exactly how to situate the groves, how much room to give them, etc.
If your grove is crowded, you might try culling some canes to open it up more and make sure that it gets watered liberally at the start of the season. I mulch mine a little as well, to compensate for the overly clay soil.

JayDeeParticipantI favor clumpers over runners but I wish I had the heart for black ‘boo.
April 27, 2013 at 4:03 am #788844
DBPMemberRunners are considered a potential “pest” species because of the tendency to spread. It’s a real threat, but it is also overblown. Climate and soil conditions here just aren’t right for real bamboo to become a pest species. Yet.
False bamboo (Japanese Knotweed) is a different matter: http://tinyurl.com/4xtdofg
I have followed all the guidelines in terms of putting barriers around my ‘boo (and I advise others to do so as well) but I have also seen where other people failed to follow the guidelines and it hasn’t exactly been an eco-disaster.
If you cut running bamboo off at ground level wherever it’s trying to “run,” you can keep it from spreading. However, if you plant it near a fence line and it runs to your neighbor’s lawn under some bushes, or if you miss trimming some escaped bamboo back for a couple of years, you’re pretty much screwed. Then you’ll have to dig it out wherever it’s spread to.
If it’s spread to your neighbor’s lawn, I believe your neighbor can legally force you to do that.

ZOneParticipantHi DBP!
WoW! I would LOVE to add the start of a black bamboo grove to compliment my golden bamboo groves! You may even have some of my golden as it is going wild with new growth this year!
Know anyone who would be wiling to help me cut for $35 or so? I have the proper soil and container. If not, I’ll hack away!

DBPMemberWe can work it out ♫
♫ We can work it out.
There’s enough ‘boo for 2, ZOne, so after Thing One comes over for his/her cut, I’ll contact you. After the first cut, it’ll be much easier to dig out, because . . .
Thanks but no on the Golden Bamboo (P. aurea). Just dig it forward.

Michael WaldoParticipantBe careful of bamboo! We recently bought a house with the exact black bamboo. They planted it next to the house. It has crossed under the sidewalk, which I think they thought would block it, and is now coming up all over the yard. I have broken them off and used Round Up and they keep coming. Ready to rip them all out and nuke the area.
April 27, 2013 at 7:33 pm #788848
DBPMemberRound Up? On bamboo? Oh my. That’s very funny, Waldo. (Say, where are you, anyway? I’ve always wondered about that.)
Have you tried this?
It smells like . . . Victory.
The only thing is: Someday, this war’s gonna end.

ZOneParticipantSuper! Thanks, DBP. A scholar, poet AND ‘boo lover!

PangolinPieParticipantI would love some but don’t have a truck, just a little car. I’d be glad to help someone else dig and plant theirs in exchange for bringing a clump over to my place in your vehicle.
April 28, 2013 at 6:27 pm #788852
DBPMemberOMG, PP . . . you shoulda seen how hard beef* worked to get that first plug outta the ground at my house.
However, now that the ground is broke-ope, it should be easier for me to dig up some smaller chunks. We’ll see. There’s a couple people lined up already.

*Yes, that’s his real name. Interesting story there, but what’s new? Interesting stories are everywhere.
April 29, 2013 at 6:03 pm #788853
PangolinPieParticipantOk, well; I’d still love some bamboo, any type, running or clumping (I have a safe location where it won’t escape). I’m limited by my small car but I’m a good digger and planter, so I’d still love to trade delivery for labor! (Or cash!)
April 29, 2013 at 8:50 pm #788854
DBPMemberWhat’s your e-mail, gold digger? DBP accepts no money for his bamboo, but he might take a jar of poems, or a song about a bird.
>>I’m limited by my small car
Pshaw! People in small cars often go on to do big things.
April 29, 2013 at 8:57 pm #788855
PangolinPieParticipantHey now, that’s GOOD digger, by no means am I a gold digger. I am a crappy poet but a pretty good painter. How about a painting? Your favorite pet perhaps?
I’m pangolinpie@gmail.com — feel free to send me other barter ideas. And if you’re curious, here are some of my paintings. :)
April 29, 2013 at 9:03 pm #788856
beefParticipantthanks again for the bamboo!
said stout being brewed this morning.
April 29, 2013 at 10:20 pm #788857
DBPMemberWhoa, dude! That looks like a story brewing there!
Yes indeed. A stout one.
** I know you’re not a gold digger, Pangs. I just can’t keep my mitts off people’s clawses. **
April 29, 2013 at 10:29 pm #788858
PangolinPieParticipantFunny, DBP. Now I want to trade a painting for some stout, too….nom nom. My favorite beer.
