tom kelleyParticipantSome years ago, my mother-in-law who was in her late eighties at the time, announced that she neither wanted nor needed anything for Christmas. Instead, she asked that each family member would choose a day of the week on which to call her. I chose Saturday and began dutifully calling her. She and I had always gotten along well and enjoyed each others company but we were always together in a family context or when she would visit Seattle; never one on one. Those calls began a process that changed our relationship. She’s still my mother-in -law but more importantly she has become my dear friend. I don’t call her on Saturday’s anymore but rather on what ever day I feel like talking to her, usually two or three times a week. We talk about politics, the weather, WWII and the NFL. So if your on someone’s list or have someone on your list and what to get is a dilemma I share this with you knowing that you will find it the best gift ever.

transplantellaParticipantMy son asked me what I wanted for Christmas this year, as he has finally acquired a decent job and makes a bit of money.
Our family pretty much abandoned Christmas presents years ago as everybody already has more stuff than they know what to do with.
I told my son that I’d been saving nicks of my household budget and was going to send the money to my FIL as they are having a hard time and anything he gave me I would give to them.
So our collected Christmas present money is going as a gift to the parents who are unable to make ends meet anymore.
@tom kelley – I don’t call them because they don’t hear well enough, the phone is all but useless to them.

JanSParticipantI am divorced, so no in-laws. Both parent’s have passed away. But…I do have an 86 yo uncle in Virginia, and this has spurred me on to call him, which I have been neglectful of recently. Sunday morning, bright and early. Thanks for the reminder, Tom :)
