I’ve been listening to my neighbors dogs bark for years now- the owners are fully aware of the barking yet do NOTHING to train the dogs. I’m not a dog expert as I have no desire to own one, but I know the dogs are simply BORED; I’ve never once seen them leave the property. And they only bark at people or things they are familiar with. The night my car was broken into there wasn’t a damn peep out of those animals.

What do you do when the owner is fully aware of the problem and won’t fix it?? It’s nice they can tune out all the noise they make but I can’t. I’d like to enjoy the peace and quiet of my ‘hood without the barking. Thanks! I’m jealous of people who live next to responsible dog owners.

It might be helpful to give the neighbors a recommendation or two for good trainers. We have used Family Dog in Kent; and I would travel farthr than that to have the opportunity to work with them again if/when I needed to. I think there have been other recommendations here in the forums too.

m – I’m sure someone will be able to suggest a remedy to your situation, I can’t think of one right now.

My Dad lives in San Diego and has 2 dogs. Well, he gets up early every morning and goes surfing for a few hours. One day, he got home and found a really nasty note on his door about the noise of his dogs barking while he was gone (and it’s really early in the morning). Needless to say, there was a lot of foul language used in this anonymous letter.

I guess my Dad went door to door to find out who wrote the letter, but no one ever admitted it (surprising). The point was this, my Dad had no idea that his dogs were making so much noise, he wasn’t there. A simple neighborly discussion could have been had and the problem would have been solved. There was no need to become nasty.

He takes his dogs with him now in the mornings.

Writing anonymous notes like that is gutless. Kudos to your dad for doing the right thing by being neighborly and wanting to talk about it face to face. It seems people have lost the skill of communicating openly and confidently.

I would suggest recording the dogs and giving the owners a CD of their dogs behavior while they are gone. I could do that for you for a fee.

flipjack – I love it! If I was having this issue, I would definitely take you up on that!

We had neighbors once with large, barking dogs. We approached the people several times, but each time they denied that their dogs barked. I finally left a message on their answering machine, talking while standing in the kitchen doorway. You could barely hear me over the dogs. They did start keeping the dogs inside more after that.

I like that! Like NR’s dad, I’m not much for the anonymous messages. Sounds like an effective technique Jerald.

    flipjack that’s hilarious.

I would like to mention that I live almost across the street from a really sweet, well-behaved bull terrier with very conscientious caretakers. Dog spends a good amount of time outside but is well contained and doesn’t bark his head off, and when he does start to bark his people either bring him inside or otherwise convince him to calm down. Thank you good neighbors!

I want to say that we have a neighbor who is wonderful about her dogs! When they moved in the dogs barked all day at everything that moved. We gave it a couple of days and then talked to her. She had no idea her dogs were barking and took steps to stop. When she found out that they could clear the fence, she had a fence builder in that week to put up a larger fence. One day I went out and found a hole under the fence and the dog toy just a few inches in from the hole. Before I could get dressed and go out, she had started to fill the hole (I did throw the toy back).

I’m very thankful to have such a good neighbor and willing to put up with a little normal dog behavior.

I have children who yell and make noise outside and I am sure that can be as annoying to neighbors without children (like my dog neighbor) and I am sure that some day a ball will go over the fence and break a window or something. I’m hoping that my good karma is building up!!

in my neighbor’s defense.. she is well into her 80s and i think the dog’s noise is her only company… and the barking is a sign to her that he isn’t bored.

i know she is lonely because if i go out onto the deck for long.. the dog quiets, she comes to check on him and then talks for a long time.

so i make a point to talk with her if she is on the deck..

i too hope i am building karma.. in my 30s i thought 80 was too far away to ponder. now it seems like tomorrow:)

We have neighbors next door, that have two barking dogs, other neighbors have left notes, it was ok for a couple of weeks now they are left out again when no one is home. I have spoken with them, and they just don’t get it. Barking dogs take away from the enjoyment of our property, it’s annoying, and unfair to say the least. We are now going through the Animal Safety & Control procedures to hit where it hurts, the wallet. Kudos to good, responsible dog owners who consider their neighbors, and thumbs down to those who don’t. you will soon learn to be considerate.
