Lame and trashy. That’s my perception of it, at least. Never been in, but walked by plenty of times. I’ve also heard from many people that the food sucks. If I were to choose a casual bar/restaurant on Alki to visit, it’s be Cactus.

The food is just bar food and it’s definitely not a good place if you will have kids with you. It’s the kind of place you would enjoy if you were recently legal drinking age. More a drinking establishment than restaurant. But I haven’t been there in over a year so maybe it’s changed.

What type of info are you looking for? Size, layout, family friendly, entertainment, food, cocktails?

It’s long and narrow, the far back was (is?) used for live entertainment, but you have to be closer to the back to see the entertainment, food is okay but nothing to rave about, cocktails are fine, sidewalk seating in the summer. I rarely go there, prefer Cactus for food/happy hour, and like Celtic Swell if I’m just going out for a drink or two.

I wouldn’t say it’s amazing, but I also have to disagree with it not being a good place to go with kids. If we’re down on Alki, it’s actually one of the best/easiest places to go when we have the kids (almost 5 and 2yrs) with us. The seating is pretty open, they have coloring and crayons, TVs, extensive menu, and friendly wait staff. I stick with a choice few menu items, but have never had any real complaints. (That said, I’d take Cactus over pretty much any other place down there, any day! So good.)

I have to agree with carrieann. Bamboo is our first pick if we’re at Alki with kids. On nice weekend days the clientele outside and near the bar can be a bit young and rowdy but really we’ve never been there to hit the bar scene anyway, but for lunch it’s fine. I love love their club sandwich!

We will sometime go for some drinks or their late-night happy hour in the summer. We prefer Cactus or Dukes.

So what is it? Can someone give me the “Bamboo Bar for Dummies” summary?

My personal favorite bars on Alki is a tie between the swell & cactus. (Depends on my mood.) I have gone to Bamboo occasionally, but have learned to always eat before. There food is not the greatest and has much room for improvement. And most nights the atmosphere just isnt what I am looking for… but for some it must work b/c it does always seem to keep a consistent crowd there.

You’re better off at the Rocksport. Cactus isn’t for kids and I had the worst calamari ever from Alki’s Dukes. And I know what good calamari tastes like(not flemsy and flakey either.. Everything on the water is overpriced and watered down drinks wise. So, if you want to spend a lot of money just to see a water view with the kiddie’s, then its your wallett. There are half a dozen places I’d hit with kids first in WS before Alki. In the Junction,Elliott’s Brewery, even Talarico’s early at night they serve kids(pizza) but not later at night,I think even West 5 allowes kids. I went to Bamboo only once and had a jack and coke and some wings and it tasted like… never again.

Great drinks, good bands but I don’t recommend the food. My personal favorite, the Celtic Swell is right down the street.

The decor is tropical, bright and cheery, kind of tiki or Jimmy Buffet-ish. Most of the front of the restaurant is ‘bar’ oriented, and the dining section is in the back of the restaurant. They have maybe 6 booths and several standard tables that can accommodate small or large groups. During happy hour and/or dining times, it’s a mixed crowd, young, old, locals and visitors.

The menu has a great variety, but as everyone mentioned, it’s pretty mediocre. I’ve always enjoyed the appetizer menu most, but they have burgers, pasta, seafood, steaks and salads too. The bar menu is very creative, very extensive, but a bit inconsistent depending on the mixologist.

The prices on food and beverage is pretty average as well. May not be “the best” place on the beach, but in general it seems to hold it’s own.

Happened to me once there, Jiggers. I was too tipsy at that point to take immediate notice, but it happens.

Liked it enough to go a second time, so, once with the kid, once without.

Not a spectacular experience that we would take out-of-town guests there, but decent. The staff has always been super nice – especially to my daughter (even played along when she and a friend wanted to be “grown-up” and sit at their own table).

We usually look for the LEAST crowded place to go, though. I’m thinking that the 2 times we’ve ended up there were because they weren’t busy.

Cactus has always been kid friendly to us – although we’ve only gone with the kiddo during the day.
