GenHillOneParticipantWe’ve come to the point where it makes no sense to keep our Qwest land line at $45-$50/month (with no long distance service even included in that price). It appears that Vonage offers us what we need, including the ability to forward calls to a cell number in the case of a cable outage, at much greater savings. It also gives us long distance for which we had been using cells. Anyone have any positive or negative experiences to share?

FrippMemberWe use Vonage and are generally happy with it. The only comment I would add is that while you can forward calls to a cell phone, it becomes quite difficult to do if your power or cable goes out as you no longer have access to the website. I don’t think it is any worse than Comcast’s telephone service which is almost twice as much.
I have used my blackberry to tweak settings when I locked myself out of my apartment building and needed to buzz myself in, so that is a possible workaround for power and cable outages.

addParticipantWe have had Vonage for a while – generally it is OK, but if there is a glitch with your internet service it will of course affect your telephone service. I have had several instances of a sudden disconnect on a call, then having to wait for several minutes to get a dial-tone back, sometimes having to call them or go the website to fix. I would give their reliability a B (maybe even a B- since it seems those random disconnects always seem to happen on important or business-related calls!!!).

emilyMemberIf I switch to Vonage, don’t I still have to keep my connection to Qwest for the DSL line? Is there a way to completely get rid of Qwest?
What about with Comcast? That comes through the cable line instead of the phone line?
Thanks!

GenHillOneParticipantThank you Fripp and add – helpful feedback. My goodness, I assumed the call forwarding was able to be done via cell phone, so will have to look into that!

emily – we use Comcast for cable and DSL, just don’t want to use their phone service. The only thing we use Qwest for currently is the land line telephone. We don’t use the land line a lot and we don’t feel like we’re getting enough out of it for the price – the fees and taxes alone are a good percentage of the bill. So in our case, we would be completely getting rid of Qwest.

KayzelMemberI got Qwest-free last spring and moved both my numbers to Vonage. I have Comcast cable and DSL, so when Comcast fails, Vonage fails, and while not frequent, it’s always inconvenient. Vonage phone support is very good. I guess I’d give them a B, too. But I gave Qwest a D overall. I keep a cheapo prepaid cell for emergencies.
Just remember, if you leave Qwest, you leave your phone book listings behind. Some people care about this, others don’t.
