changingtimesMemberRight on corner by hope luthern. Looks like broken wing. I tried to get it but it ran into traffic so I just put bread out there for it. I know it’s just a pigeon but I felt bad for it :((

mehud7ParticipantInjured wildlife can be taken to:
VCA Five Corners in Burien ( for transfer to Sarvey) or PAWS Wildlife in Lynnwood. Don’t forget to make a donation too. As in this case it can be tricky to catch an injured wild animal. Thank you to changing times for trying to help this pigeon. Maybe someone can check on it in the morning.

inactiveMemberif you (or anybody else) want to try capturing it in the AM, grab an old big sheet and a cardboard box with folding top so air gets in but space is dark.
Now, there are probably other ways to get the bird, but throwing a half-folded sheet out over the critter has worked for me many times – you want to be fairly close and off to the side or back of it. Then gently gather up the bird and put the creature in the box on a rumpled up towel -and close the lid – ensuring air gets in the top..the dark cool space will help the bird not freak out.
You know, I’ve always wondered if people like changingtimes and all of the other gazillion compassionate creature lovers here in West Seattle would ever be interested in a “Injured wildlife – capture pickup/delivery to rehab kind of volunteer effort?
It would just be a resource where folks could call somebody to capture injured small mammals/birds (not Seals or marine mammals – we’ve got that covered with Seal Sitters). Now, I know Hammerhead and a couple of other folks volunteer when they can – God bless them – but I’m talking about a wider base of volunteers and some educational opportunities working with vet clinics?…thinking big, maybe. I always do. :)
Any exotic vet tech’s and wildlife rehabber’s out there in West Seattle want to get something like this going? Or IS there something like this already?
It’s particularly cool to contemplate how effective a small group like that might be in early spring with all the young one’s leaving nests, dens, etc.
Just one of my “somebody should do this” thoughts that I have rolling around in my head – this one for about four years now. :) If anybody out there is a veterinary tech, dvm or rehabber, speak up if you are down for exploring the concept.
And, CT – good luck with the pigeon.

anonymeParticipantDood, I think that’s a fabulous idea. I’ve always wanted to do wildlife rehab, but the lack of a vehicle makes it difficult. Perhaps as a group we could arrange to receive some training (aside from the excellent suggestions you’ve made above). Some people might be able to act as temporary caretakers rather than transporters. I’d be up for that.

hammerheadParticipantwell since I am just seeing this chances are not good for the pigeon. If some one should see it call my rescue line 206-427-6454. I will be in the west seattle area all day. Will bring carrier with me.
Dood, as for your idea, I think what you are saying from your statement is just trying to get injured wildlife and take to an approve vet office and/or take to one of the wildlife places, Correct? 5 corners and I believe Lien take wildlife. 5 corner is open 24 hr. I can’t remember which vet works with Paws or Sarvey.
Neither vets office have much training is rescuing the wild animal.
As for fish and wildlife, sarvery or even paws would NOT even come out to rescue a pelican. I did it no questions asked. I have watched enough rescue show to get the basics right with success. Sarvey did finally come out and pick it up.
TO be approved to rehab smaller wildlife, opossums, baby racoons or even birds you have to go threw extensive training. I do know this for a fact, I inquired about it one time.
Dood please note I of course MEAN NO disrespect to your idea.
While I am not available 24/7 gotta sleep some time. I will do what ever I can with in reason to help with any injured animal.

inactiveMemberI want to note that wildlife rehabbers and exotic veterinary techs are licensed professions with very specific training. To be clear, I am not envisioning non-licensed or untrained people doing vet care of any kind whatsoever. It would be strictly transporting animals to the professionals. People would need to have a means to transport them.
Anon- if you can find someone to take you to Or join you up to Lynwood, PAWS Wildlife Center has an awesome
volunteer program with varying levels of training.
For now, however, thinking strategically,, I am interested in speaking with existing trained and/or icensed wildllife rehabbers, vet techs trained in exotics and DVMs who
might be interested.
Once a framework is set up with those type of folks, assuming I find them here in WS and they are interested in supporting the beginning and training of such a “wildlife
ambulance” and potential educational derivatives, THEN gathering other good peeps who would need to be trained
would be the next step.
So first things first:
if any trained wildlife rehabbers or vet techs or DVMs are lurking and interested in participating in a conversation about an organized network for transporting injured wildlife, write me at:

funkietooParticipantBe aware that if the pigeon can be rehab’d, but cannot be released back to the wild, PAWS Wildlife will kill it. If you are okay with this philosophy, then go to PAWS Wildlife. They do a lot of great life saving work.
I just don’t agree with killing animals that cannot be released back to the wild when there are other options that would provide a quality life for the animal. Not sure the animals would agree with being killed either. Once I experienced PAWS Wildlife philosophy firsthand, I stopped donating to them (after 2 decades of doing so).

lucky chickMemberYou can take injured birds (if collected in Seattle) to Seattle Animal Shelter in Interbay and PAWS will pick them up. If you can gently place the bird in a cloth bag and hang the bag, that’s the best way to transport them. Cardboard tube (head in first, wings folded) is also good if you can find the proper size.

munchkin22MemberAny word on the pigeon in question? If someone were able to get it and stabilize it, and it’s wing were repairable, we’d be happy to give it a home in our aviary with our doves. Funkietoo knows how to contact us.

funkietooParticipantIf the pigeon was rescused and can be rehabbed, but not released, it would have a GREAT home with munchkin22! You may contact them through me @ funkietoo@hotmail.com

AimParticipantSaw the pigeon yesterday walking across 42nd at Oregon, on the north side of Oregon. S/he is a brown and white pigeon, and the left wing was hanging.
I was there around 2pm. I don’t know if the bird is still there 24 hours later, but it was definitely there yesterday early afternoon.
