Apologies if this subject has been addressed. Does anybody know what is up with the trees cut midway way up from Avalon to Olga on Admiral? I briefly saw Parks Dept. crews there but that tree “cutting” is kind of spectacular in a bad way.

Blades, I haven’t seen that particular stretch, but I have noticed some pretty egregious pruning of street trees recently. California south of Morgan has some hideous examples – I saw one tree that had its main trunk and leader removed halfway up, and many others with large branches just hacked in half. Many of the trees along the Avalon construction route have been butchered, and now look like stalks of broccoli sliced lengthwise. I’m not sure who is doing this, but Parks employees are generally not qualified for this work. Unfortunately, from what I’ve seen lately, neither are the arborists and tree companies contracted by the City. SDOT is in charge of street trees, so that explains a lot.

I joined Don’t Clearcut Seattle. Tired of complaining after the fact. I want to live somewhere pretty.

SDOT is in charge of selecting and planting trees, which they do with abandon under power lines, and select trees that will grow up into the power lines. Seattle City Light is in charge of pruning the trees away from the power lines to avoid arcing and power outages. As far as I can tell, there is no communication between the two.
