I live with a 1954 kitchen with a “Drop-in” range. After 60 years I want to install a new stove but the drop in is narrower than 30 inches and is sitting on a platform 1-foot off the ground with a utility drawer underneath. There is a bullnose tile surround that narrows the gap to 28.75″ or so. New stoves do not “drop in” but are free-standing.

I need someone to lower the platform to about 2″ high, and cut off enough cabinet to make the opening 30″ wide with bullnose preserved and the new stove level or raised a titch above the tile. I have replacement tile

This is not a kitchen remodel, this is just a Redo, not a Renovation.

Who would the WSB Crowd recommend? The project is not large enough to entice many contractors, I’ve tried on Angies List. Thanks for your help.

Sounds like it might be a job for Ventana? And before you rule them out – just remember, the answer is ALWAYS “NO” until you ask :)

I have a handyman than can create, repair, and redo. He has taken on many challenges in my 1921 Craftsman and has helped many others with their unusual projects here in West Seattle. I will advise him of your ad tomorrow and let him know I posted this response. His name is George Wright and he can be reached at 206 383 5797.

I asked Ventana for a quote because they’ve sponsored the Blog, and we’ll see if they are interested. I took some pix of the set-up which can be seen here:

I’m curious abut your statement, ‘New stoves do not “drop in” but are free-standing’. I googled ‘drop-in kitchen ranges’ and got lots of hits:

It seems as if 30″ is standard, which leaves the problem of the tile bullnosing, unless there is a product with removable trim that can reduce the width next to the bullnosing. Maybe a trip to Albert Lee or Sears might be worthwhile.

    Just a thought.

@JayDee, thanks for the images. All I can say is WOW! I’m willing to bet that was a “top of the line” stove 60 years ago, and looks to be well taken care of. Please keep us posted on the outcome of your redo! Now that you have teased us with the before pictures – we naturally will be wanting to see the after pictures :)

An Albert Lee salesguy was the source of “they don’t make drop in stoves” and as Paul Harvey used to say: “Now for the rest of the story”…I want to get an induction stove. All I have read suggests they are superior to gas and the old stove is also electric. While I have gas at the furnance, getting it to the kitchen would be another cost. I don’t mind the cabinet work if I could find someone to do it (Ventana politely declined). Maybe I will go with an unbonded handy man…
