oops, i forgot to wade in myself. that was rude of me…

i favor weekdays but would do weekends to meet more people.. if weekends, i would prefer breakfast.. on saturday:)

I prefer lunch but can do the cocktail hour and munchies as long as no one minds that i won’t be drinking alcohol…

i can do a coffee house too… that works too.

I am currently not available monday and wednesday evenings (dog classes and the library). :)

isn’t it ironic. we have so many more ways of communicating these days and sometimes we communicate less.

I think that is because we are fundamentally less polite to one another than we once were.

I miss the friendliness… i think everyone does. But i don’t miss the censure that went with any breach of what was considered manners.

    we need to find balance.

As we have noted on the Seattle freeze board, it is difficult for new people to connect in our society… it isn’t just Seattle.

And there is nothing worse for a child.. or an adult for that manner… to throw a party that no one attends.

My heart is with the child.

i can only tell a parent that children need to become active in extracurricular activities. This is where they make friends.

And.. we need to be careful about what kind of expectations we set ourselves up for… that the day of big b-day parties may be ending. Better to have a really great time with two or three friends or family.

and… as adults… if you don’t know them well enough to call them and find out if they are coming, you probably shouldn’t care that much if they show up or not.

that said, i really am a schmuck for not sending back my own grand-daughter’s reply card so she could put it in her wedding book.. because i do know that even though I don’t put much stock in that kind of ceremony, she does.

I will do it today. thanks cinnamon for making me think of it.

    tonight’s exit polls are interesting.

turns out the “old farts” are voting Clinton and the “kids” are voting Obama.

As one of those voices of experience, i have said plenty about why i think we desperately need the experience of a Hillary Clinton presidency… but more than that, we need the hope and exuberence of the young along with the steadfast experience of the old supporting whoever earns our nomination.

Because it looks like they are going to earn it.. the old fashioned way.

There won’t be any losers in this one. Their platforms are similar enough that we can all embrace what they stand for.

I am feeling so incredibly lucky to be a democrat tonight.

Ok, Jan. Maybe that was a little harsh. But you and everyone else were pretty “strong” in those opinions of Ann Coulter. I think people don’t get the fact that she has a very dry sense of humor. (Not saying you, personally)

Also agree that it will take a long while to withdraw from this war, if done right. Pulling out immediately, right now, makes our Country even more vulnerable.

Oh, I miss Stern in the morning, too!

house.. ok sometimes i am a little slow ;(

and yes, i know we won’t fix it now. We won’t fix it for a very long time. That’s why it’s such a big deal.

But we could start to fix it now.

And i disagree that the terrorists would get worse if we withdrew.

We are the point they are making.

However, the current govt would collapse in a heartbeat and there would be tremendous political instability… And that probably wouldn’t be a good thing. It certainly wouldn’t be a good thing for the oil companies who are trying their best to get their hands on Iraqi oil.

life is complicated. you just have to do what you can.

Thanks san, don’t know how I missed that comic relief. And JimmyG I can’t remember when I laughed so hard. Totally appropriate call out. As for on topic, mine said Kucinich as well and I was surprised that Obama came out higher than Hilary.

Hey…New Res…if we’re going to get nit picky – lol..oh, heaven forbid….I think this all started when you disagreed with me about MY OPINION of Ann Coulter, and you responded with “

“For not being threatened by Ann Coulter, you sure have some mean things to say about her. To feel that much hatred for someone, you “can’t stand the woman”, you obviously are threatened! That’s so obvious, it’s funny! For example, it’s ridiculous and appalling to me that former President Clinton lied under oath and was DISBARRED, but yet he is considered by some to have been a great President! I don’t hate former President Clinton and i can actually stand him. He’s ridiculous, but kind of just a joke if you ask me. Has anyone taken the time to read the 9/11 Commission Report, by the way?

    Posted 3 days ago #”

you said that I was threatened by her ( your opinion that I disagreed with), and then talked about how much hate I must have. Again, an opinion that I disagreed with. Perhaps we should have both agreed to disagree, and let it go at that…:)

House…Howard Stern? There’s always Ralph Nader..isn’t the Green Party running him up the flagpole again?

    not going there, doing that.

I have to tell you all that when i took that quiz, i was quite surprised that i didn’t turn out strongly in favor of hillary… i was also a kucinich fan by a huge percentage…

and my husband’s top contender was someone he had to go look up.

the difference in percentage between the two top democratic contenders in my quiz and the republicans was a lot greater than it was in house’s between his top contender and Gore … but it is still surprising how much we have in common when you look at actual issues.

that is what i liked about that quiz.. it focused on issues.

Erik, It has been a long time since we produced a candidate i felt strongly enough about to speak out … you are right, they are right and left on the same old bird.. .but for some reason i like this one.

we will see how she if she is still running after tonight:)

I can probably fix it over the phone or right here if you want to describe the problem.

Been repairing computers since the PC jr and the commadore 64.

I don’t own a current mac but I have parts for various imacs in the attic.

otherwise I own and run too many computers of various types and operating systems.

    Whats yer problem?

That is my point, JoB. Does anyone care to tell me who I attacked where I wasn’t just defending myself after being lashed out at first? The comment to JanS was just another point to make. Sorry if offensive. I know that you pointed out that Colbert was a joke. I merely stated that I think he already knew that. He seems to be a pretty intelligent person.

I know that my political views are probably shared by very few people (left and right wings of the same ole poor bird that’s been held captive by its master). Personally I know I have no say (and don’t care) in which aristocracy takes over at the next election. I’ll do what I must (legal and otherwise) to have a fulfilling life and not rely upon any political saviours. If I chose to not befriend those I disagree with it would be a very lonely life.

    Cheers!

JimmyG…I love good discourse. But…you’re not helping anything here by claiming someone is or isn’t someone. I think that being part of the problem isn’t the answer, and you may end up driving more people away than you anticipated here. My opinion…we are all adults here. If we all felt the same way about things, life would be extremely boring indeed. That’s true in politics, in religion, in world views. So…take the high road and let’s get back to discussing ( and disagreeing on) some of the issues here.

OK..I’m stepping off my soapbox now :)

Does it really matter if new resident. cinnamon and lattemom are the same person? probably not.

It’s the post you respond to more than the person.

New resident… i don’t see so many attacks. I do see a lot of people who disagree with some of the things you say and agree with others.

And that seems to bother you a lot. You are not the only one who is offended by disagreement, but you are do seem to take it more personally than some others.

After the way republicans talked about President Clinton while he was in office, it amazes me how offended some are by any criticism of President George W Bush or his policies.

After all, we are actually concerned about what this President is doing in the way of policy…

And I have to tell you, even i find comments like this one:

“Btw, JanS… you seem a little ungrateful and unhappy about the money coming to you. If it would make you feel better, I can take it off your hands!”

offensive. Jan has a perfect right to be less than positive about that “refund”.

New resdient, has it escaped your attention that what is being returned to us is our money? I don’t think any of us are unhappy to be getting some of our tax dollars back after all of the tax cuts for the rich, but it is going to take more than a one time payment to make me grateful.

With all of our changes, will be lucky this year to escape the alternative minimum tax which will pop us up into the stratasphere for tax brackets.

    Tax reform is long overdue.

And blasting someone for their opinion like that is rude.

If you don’t want people to be rude to you, don’t be rude to them.

i think we would all do well to remember that.

BTW new resident, i was the one who pointed out to house that colbert was a joke…

NewResident, I have no issues with someone speaking their mind and opinions on here. But there are different ways and intents of saying something, and that’s where the problem is. If I told you that I preferred X brand instead of Y, that’s stating my opinion. But if I were to say that someone is a moron if they don’t agree that X is better, then that’s still my opinion, but it’s inflammatory and rude. (I’m not saying you said those quotes or anything like them – I’m giving an example.)

I welcome the difference of opinion here and encourage it – we all learn from it. But if we can go back to “I” statements and not attack each other over our views/beliefs/in general, I think that everyone will be more pleasant here.

Btw, the other two, cinnamon and lattemom, probably don’t chat anymore because everyone is so rude. Unless we think like you, you don’t like us. Is that really how you live your lives?

This is the email reply I just got from someone at SDOT:

“Thank you for your inquiry regarding the rules pertaining to left turns at neighborhood traffic circles. You are correct that the Washington Driver Guide (and the state law that the guide implements), does not distinguish between

    neighborhood traffic circles and roundabouts.

Practically speaking, a left turn can be performed safely in front of a neighborhood traffic circle since they are typically located on low traffic volume and low speed residential streets, unlike roundabouts, which control traffic flow on higher volume arterials.

However, under a strict interpretation of the Driver Guide and state laws, this is not a legal left turn, and similarly to roundabouts, a driver turning left at a neighborhood traffic circle should proceed counterclockwise around the traffic circle, rather than turning left in front of the circle.

We recognize that this issue causes confusion, and the City will be working this year toward clarifying the distinction between neighborhood traffic circles and roundabouts in state law, addressing the issue in the Seattle Municipal

    Code, or both.”

So I read this as yeah, you’ll probably get away with it because we usually ignore it, but it’s technically not legal to make the short left and you COULD get a ticket for it if somebody is bored and wants to write a ticket.

    New Resident-

Somehow I knew you you couldn’t resist piping in. I can hardly begin to accept reprimand from you. Anyone who refers to Ann Coulter as ” an intellignet woman” who “should be applauded”, would surely be the one who could who would recognize a “mean-spirited” person. It’s funny how you blab about how wrong it is to gang up on people on this blog. Yet, this post is not the first that you have stated your thoughts about how “most liberals you’ve met are too defensive and argumentative.” Nice generalization for someone who is worried about the way we all portray ourselves. Grow a leg to stand on, then we’ll talk, friend.

There was a thread some time ago about this:

Reader Recommendation Request: Computer house call?

I used Quidnunc based on the reviews offered by the readers. They make house calls and are very helpful. I had originally thought I’d need a home visit for my sick PC, but the technician who I spoke with over the phone actually walked me through a 5 min. procedure curing my notebook, all at no charge. Can’t get any better than that.

Elyce Tajima(L.Ac., M.S.O.M. on her card) is great for acupuncture. She’s at Sound, Mind, Body (?) on California next to Talarico’s pizza. Elyce is very gentle, takes her time, gets to know you — over-all a very thoughtful, patient acupuncturist. 206-271-9939

I can pretty much guarantee that House knew Colbert was a joke (I scored almost exactly the same). Stop ganging up on people! Is that all that happens on this blog? If you have read any of House’s posts you would realize that he is not an “ass”, san. I rather enjoy both House and JoB posts. They both have intelligent things to say, it seems. Why are liberals always so defensive and argumentative (excluding JoB) If you all look back at all the posts, are you really happy with the way you are all portraying yourselves? So mean-spirited!

In reply to: Future Mom Daycare ?

In general, finding care for infants is very hard, so start early and get on waiting lists! FCC (already mentioned) and Mount St. Vincent are always highly recommended, but have LONG waiting lists (if you can even get on them). The Montessori programs are generally for older kids, but I believe one of them in WS does accept kids under 2. If you’re open to all kinds of daycare, the subscription to http://www.childcare.org/ is worth it– it will allow you to search daycare options by zipcode, including the licensed family daycares (run by individuals in their own homes). We found that for infants, we preferred (for our two children) the smaller environment that in-home daycare offers, as well as the exposure to older children. There are some great folks out there running extremely high-quality daycares, so you might consider it. Most in-home daycares are licensed for a total of 6 children (only 2 under the age of 2). I think the going rate is between $50-60/day for infants, a little less once your child turns 2. The bigger centers are a bit more expensive (but may have better hours or less mandatory vacation time). Good luck!

I’m big on the taxi too. $30 including tip each way and anything over five days I think is comparable in price – less than that, it’s often worth my sanity (more time, less hassle!).

My husband used to travel extensively for work and for about a year he used Masterpark almost every week. They have coupons on their website and he never had a problem with his car while there. He highly recommends it.

Just thought I’d post about an interesting program that I’ve found…one of the sponsors is PCC, another is Pioneer Organics. If you spend money at these places (or at any of the other businesses listed – not all in WS), it benefits you, them, Puget Sound, etc, etc…just sign up to get the card :)

I either take a taxi or use one of the MasterPark lots. It depends on how long going to be I’m gone. Do the math, I figure a taxi is about $60.00 round trip. Parking is about $10.00 a day, maybe less with a coupon.

I have found that the shuttle only saves a buck or two over a taxi. I basically stopped using the shuttle when I had to wait over an hour for a shuttle back to West Seattle one evening, I gave up and hired a taxi, was very surprised that the fare was so close in price to the shuttle.
