I witnessed a group of high school kids stealing a case of beer at lunch time. I was unable to do anything at the time so I called the store when I got home. Alex took all the information down and said he would look at the cameras, notify the school principal and speak with the parents.
    Thank you Alex!

We are moving to West Seattle soon (from out of state) & trying to understand all the options & the flow of the schools there.

We will be in the Arbor Heights Attendance Area (Denny/Sealth).

I would love to hear from Arbor Heights families about your experiences & especially with the middle/high school tracks. Do most kids go on to Denny/Sealth? Do a lot of Arbor Heights families try to get into Madison & West Seattle High by applying for choice schools? Or try for other options?

Any first hand knowledge is much appreciated!

sbre, Thank you for sharing this wonderful story. Much needed at this time.

Most of all, though, thank you for seeing James as the Human Being that he is, and interacting with him in such a positive manner.

I hope James was able to move into a more secure, safe, and warm living situation.

My bike commute to/from work includes the trails that run along Harbor Ave and West Marginal Way (WMW).
For several months “James” has been living along the WMW trail where it curves away from the road to circle around/behind a tractor-trailer parking lot.
In the beginning we would waive and say hello as I passed when he was ‘home’ or near-by. Eventually I stopped to chat, found out a some of his needs and would occasionally drop-off a few things to augment his life.  In return he would give me some ‘wine’ he made from fruit he collected in the area, which was actually pretty good!!
Last Friday I bought a stack of chocolate-chip cookies from a fund-raiser so stopped and gave him a couple on my way home, in parting I said “I’ll see you Monday” to which James replied “No you won’t, I’m heading out on Monday and won’t be around by the time you pass through in the evening. (My morning ride has be going by there before 6am while he was still asleep).
Sure enough, he and 98% of his belongings were gone last night, and much to my surprise, and enjoyment, the area was well cleaned and all that I could see was one full garbage bag and the remnants of an old vacuum cleaner.
It appears James did a bang-up job in cleaning-up after himself, not leaving a big mess for others to have to take care of.
So this is a shout-out to James, wherever he may have landed, that I appreciate his integrity and commitment in taking care of ‘our space’ that he called home for a short while.
We read about and see the evidence of so many homeless and not-homeless who don’t clean-up after themselves, and this was one situation where the lazy route could have easily been taken, but instead a good man did the right thing.

    Thank you James!!

    Hi Neighbors,

According to the WSB, the old Short Stop convenience store is being developed into an expansion of the Morgan Junction Park and won’t be in planning stages until later in 2018.

I live right next door. It’s been fine so far living next to an empty lot (really wasn’t missing much with the Short Stop next door, to be honest.)

Recently, I noticed two men have set up tents and are living in the rear of the lot. I don’t think West Seattle is impervious to the homeless epidemic in Seattle, and I certainly don’t want to be insensitive to the crisis.

However, I can’t help but feel more on edge about our safety–They were cooking either with open flame or with a grill. If their fire spreads, we have shrubs that edge up towards our apartment..and our cars are parked within sight of their camp. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure I saw one of the men shoot up. (I was kind of far away, and can’t say for certain.) Our car got broken into last year–and I may be judgmental, but their arrival makes me feel uneasy.

If the City of Seattle owns this property, is there anything I can do? I want to make sure these guys are treated humanely, but I also want to ensure we have a safe neighborhood. Does anyone have any suggestions or news about the development of the park? Am I being a jerk?

    Thanks, neighbors!

West Seattle has two option schools. Louisa Boren STEM k-8 and Pathfinder k-8. No one is assigned to an option school – you have to submit a form (March-ish?) listing it as your preference. Selection is based on the following: 1) siblings in the school get first priority. 2) geographic zone. If you live in the geographic zone you get second preference. Geo zones are pretty small and you can find them online. 3) lottery.
Both option schools have pretty long waitlists of students not getting in, so I think it’s safe to say these are sought-after schools. In my experience, if you do not have a sibling in the school and you do not live in the geo zone, the chances of getting a spot are slim. But if you like the school you might as well apply – it doesn’t cost anything and it doesn’t eliminate you from your second, third, etc choice schools.
We have a first grader at STEM. Our experience with the school has been excellent. STEM was our first choice school. We also toured Pathfinder. Pathfinder wasn’t for us – but many people love it. We also really liked Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic school. That was our second choice.
In the winter (Jan/Feb) most schools – both option and assignment – have open houses and tours. I highly recommend visiting a couple. You can talk to parents, teachers, principals, and visit the classrooms.
As for assignment schools – you’re guaranteed a spot in your assignment school. If you want to attend a different assignment school you can apply for a spot and I believe they also give first priority to siblings and then it’s a lottery.
Good luck and see you soon!

We are planning to re-locate to West Seattle (from CA) & I am trying to research my school options (remotely – which is challenging)

I would really love some feedback about the school options & process..

Here is our situation: We will be moving to a home in the Arbor Heights Attendance Area. We will have a daughter starting 2nd grade, and a younger daughter a few years away from starting school.

I have a number of questions and would appreciate any feedback on any of them!! I should mention our priorities in a school are of course educational opportunities and strong academics, but even moreso a comfortable, welcoming environment/culture, where are daughters can make good friends, get involved with activities, and feel safe and part of the community

1 – I’m wondering if there are any West Seattle resources to link up with parents & learn more about first hand experiences with the schools?

2 – Thoughts about the AH/Denny/Sealth track? (vs trying to get into a Choice or Option school in the north part of West Seattle?)

3 – Our home is equally close to Gatewood. What are the chances of getting into Gatewood as a choice school in 2nd grade? What do people think about Gatewood vs Arbor Heights? Madison vs Denny?

4 – What are the chances of getting into Pathfinder k-8 in 2nd grade as an option school? Is this a desirable option in West Seattle? What is the reputation?

5 – What about the high schools? Thoughts about Sealth vs West Seattle? Are there big differences between the 2?

6 – Do a lot of West Seattle families opt for private schools? Or are the reputation of the public school options fairly good?

I know this is a lot of questions! Any feedback about any of them is much appreciated! And Again if anyone has resource ideas where I can find some parents to talk to about the school options to help inform our decision about how to proceed.

    THANK YOU!

1 – I’m wondering if there are any West Seattle resources to link up with parents & learn more about first hand experiences with the schools?

2 – Do Arbor Heights families tend to continue on to Denny & Sealth? Or go elsewhere? It seems like there are a lot of discrepancies between AH & the other Denny feeder schools (in terms of ratings, etc). I’m wondering how this affects the middle & high school experience & choices, if at all?

3 – Our home is equally close to Gatewood. What are the chances of getting into Gatewood as a choice school in 2nd grade? What do people think about Gatewood vs Arbor Heights? Madison vs Denny?

thanks. i don’t see this rabbit as fairly big but i will walk the alley to see if i can find the owner to make sure.

i am mostly worried about the rabbit. i wasn’t until i found it in the back yard just outside the dog door.

I have a shiba inu which is pretty prey driven and i am afraid that even if he is blind, a meeting between two of them wouldn’t go well.

I left a bag with my work laptop and a LCD projector behind at the bus stop at Alaska & Fauntleroy (downtown bound, near Les Schwab) coming into work this morning . A friend nearby ran back once I realized I left it behind 30min later and found the bag but no projector or computer. If anyone sees an older model, heavy dell computer or a small, white projector for sale or discarded somewhere, please reach out. So frustrated with myself.

I know they’re gone but still hoping for a West Seattle miracle…
