Wishing you the best of luck in these uncertain times, Jim.

My first real job, in the mid-’70’s was across the street from “Fairview Fanny” as a dishwasher at the old 2-3-4 Broiler. I continued to visit there, an a somewhat regular basis especially after turning 21, and would hang out at the bar, and got to know some of the Times staff (mostly pressmen and mailers and such-the reporters and “suits” mostly hung out at the Coins.) By then, the owner (widow of the owner when I worked there) had changed the name to The Nine, which had been a nickname for the place (2+3+4=9) and she did a remodel.

I’m guilty of the demise of print papers as well, because for several years now, I have read the P-I online, and only very occasionally buying a print copy of either paper.

Several years ago, for many years, I subscribed mostly to the P-I, but for some time to both. I mostly preferred the P-I, (sorry Jim!) I think mostly because it was *THE* morning paper for so long.

JoB, back in 1983, when the JOA was to get under way, a buddy and I hopped in his car and buzzed down to the P-I’s then location at 5th & Wall, to watch their presses run for the last time. As fascinating as it was (and I’ve always had a fascination with the printing process, as my Dad was a printer) I also felt a bit embarrassed, watching these people that were soon to be out of a job. It almost felt like gawking at a bad traffic accident.
