Gatewood Elementary playground design presentation @ Gatewood Elementary Cafeteria
May 8 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Help us kick off Gatewood Elementary’s playground improvements!

The final draft design for the SW corner of our playground—based on student and community priorities—will be presented this coming Monday, May 8, 6-6:30pm in the school cafeteria just before the general PTA meeting. Karen Kiest, landscape architect, and Gatewood’s playground steering committee will present the design, explain next steps in fundraising and implementation, and take questions and final feedback from our community.*

And, we need your help to make playground improvements a reality!

To apply for a $100,000 implementation grant from the Neighborhood Matching Fund in June, we need to come up with $50,000 worth of community match in the form of volunteer hours, cash, and in-kind donations. Can you, family, and friends pledge volunteer time for work parties?  All ages welcome!  Can you offer a cash donation?  Are you a contractor who could help with heavy equipment or irrigation work?  Do you own a plant nursery or related business that could donate trees, soil, mulch, sod, or other needed materials for improvements?  How about food and drinks for work parties?  It all counts toward our match, so come and lend your support for playground improvements. If you can pledge to help but can’t make the meeting on Monday, please email Sandy Lennon at sandylennon@comcast.net.

On that note, save the date!  Second Gear Sports, (WSB sponsor)our West Seattle sports consignment store, is donating 10% of sales on Sunday, May 21, to playground improvements. Gear up for your summer sports on May 21 and help us on our way to a better playground.

*Playground design work has been generously funded by a Small Sparks grant from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods’ Neighborhood Matching Fund and the Gatewood PTA.

Immigrant Rights & Family Safety Planning Workshop @ Roxhill Elementary
May 8 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

The Seattle Public Library is partnering with Colectiva Legal del Pueblo, Seattle Public Schools, and the ACLU of Washington, to offer immigrant rights and family safety planning workshops at two locations.

Library events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required. Workshops will be offered in Spanish and English. Spanish text is available in the Library’s Calendar of Events.

These workshops aim to mitigate the effects of a family member—many times the head of a family—being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Participants will learn how to develop a family safety plan, gather relevant documents to fight a deportation case and support someone who is detained.

By creating plans for children in mixed-status households, parents will be able to plan for the prospect of separation by designating temporary legal guardianship. At the workshop, families are guided through filling out general power of attorney documents that give authority to a spouse or another person to make decisions in the event of a separation.

Other topics covered will include the most recent updates on executive orders, as well as past policies, memos and executive orders that have shaped legal and ICE practices.

Monday, May 8
6 p.m. to 7:30 pm
South Park Library Branch, 8604 Eighth Ave. S, 206-615-1688

Neighborhood Preschool’s 10th anniversary
Jun 10 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

ON Saturday, June 10, Neighborhood Preschool will be celebrating 10 years of nurturing and educating 3-5 year olds in West Seattle. In 2007, after years of working in many other child education capacities, Stephanie Thiele realized her dream of creating a small, intimate space that fostered creative learning. Her goal since then has been to help both children and parents gently transition from the early years at home to the larger world of elementary school, while at the same time cultivating curiosity and imagination.

Trained in early childhood and elementary education, Stephanie also sits on the board of Directors for the West Seattle Preschool Association and is involved throughout the community. Known for her creative, engaging, and nurturing approach, she’s seen whole sibling groups come through her doors over the years. She remains committed to offering a smaller more personal option for preschoolers, with no more than an 8 to 1 teacher-student ratio.

All those who love and appreciate Miss Stephanie and the work she does with West Seattle kids, are invited to drop by the Neighborhood Preschool June 10th between 1-4 pm.
The address is: 6902 35th Ave SW, Seattle
or if you have further questions feel free to call: 206-852-1542.

Jun 27 @ 7:00 pm

Registration info here:

BOWLING WITH BOWLIES FOR BABIES
Fundraiser for Westside Baby, providing basics for children in need.

The David Bowlie League invites you to bowl with the Bowlies this summer at Roxbury Lanes and help us raise some money to support community events and organizations.

Registration includes two hours of unlimited bowling (non-league style), shoe rental, beer/wine and snacks (while supplies last), and entry into door prize drawing. We’ll have other prizes for random scores, and more! Best of all, we’ll have a ton of fun while raising some funds for our great community!

Pre-registration deadlines are one week out from each event. Night of registrations are limited to whatever space is still available at the lanes.

(The events are ages, we love kids, and we’ll totally hold your baby, but be forewarned that the Bowlies also like to drink and swear. Sometimes loudly. It’s up to you to decide if that’s going to be appropriate for your kids.)

Camp Philosophy
This is the 3rd year of the Soccer Skills Camp. Modelled after our long-standing basketball skills camp, now in its 18th year, the philosophy of the camp is to provide a positive and fun learning experience to youth by exposing them to the fundamentals of soccer and life, including the values and qualities that we feel are necessary to be successful in these arenas.

The camp will focus on three pillars, 1) skill development, 2) teamwork and leadership, and 3) life values and traits. We at Chief Sealth feel that in order to truly be successful student-athletes we must work equally in all three areas.

About Us
The camp will be directed by long-time boys and girls Head Soccer Coach, Ron Johnson. Johnson, who was named Metro Sound Boys Coach of the Year in both 2012 and 2013, has been the Seahawks head coach for 20 seasons. He has taken the boys on to the WIAA 3A Metro and State tournament multiple times. On the girls side, he has been the head coach since the program began and has built the program into a league contender, as the 2013 girls team finished 3rd in the Metro Sound League.

Coaching
The camp will be led by both current and past members of the Chief Sealth boys and girls soccer teams. They will provide coaching by exposing campers to the fundamental skills of the game through proven coaching methods. Our camp does not guarantee success as a player, but it will expose campers to the ingredients necessary to becoming a skilled player and successful high school student-athlete.

Accommodations
Each camper will receive a camp t-shirt. Campers must provide their own lunch. It is recommended that each camper bring his/her own water bottle, as water stations will be available for fill-up. Campers should also dress appropriately and consider sunscreen as we will be outside the entirety of the camp. The camp is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

It is requested that campers NOT bring their own soccer ball.

Shrek the Musical @ West Seattle High School
Aug 11 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Twelfth Night Productions (TNP) is proud to present SHREK THE MUSICAL.
“Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek….” and thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand… and his name is Shrek.
“SHREK THE MUSICAL is sweet and busy, nice and big, and, every so often, extremely lovable,” writes Newsday.

This production will be performed at West Seattle High School Theater, August 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7:30 and August 13, 19 and 20 at 3:00. Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets, and at West Seattle High School Theater, 3000 California Ave SW, an hour before the show on performance days. Prices are $23 for adults and $20 for students & seniors. http://www.twelfthnightproductions.org/

‘Pencil Me In For Kids FUNDrive’ @ WS YMCA
Aug 12 @ 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Let the magic of giving turn unneeded items into needed school supplies.

For the 22nd year, “Pencil Me In For Kids” is helping provide essential school supplies to West Seattle elementary students-in-need. This year we are raising funds in cooperation with Value Village.

The “Pencil Me In For Kids FUNDrive” is Saturday, August 12 from noon – 8 pm at the West Seattle YMCA in conjunction with the West Seattle Outdoor Movie, “Finding Dory”.

By donating gently-used clothing, shoes, accessories, book, linens, and small household items (no furniture), you can help provide the 13 West Seattle elementary schools with basic supplies such as black & white composition books, pencils, colored pencils, glue sticks, dry erase markers, pink erasers, washable markers, and pocket-file folders.

We get paid for every pound of goods donated and we use the funds to buy each school’s requested items.

Start collecting now. If you can’t get to the YMCA that day, we can arrange to pick-up prior to the 12th. For more information: Email Ann Avery at pencil.me.in.for.kids.2017@gmail.com

Aug 15 @ 7:00 pm

Registration info here:
AUGUST 15, 2017 – BOWLING WITH BOWLIES FOR BEDS
Fundraiser for Westside Baby, providing basics for children in need

Cover Dog Model Search

Unleash your dog’s inner super model at the 12th annual CityDog Cover Dog Model Search. That’s right, we’re looking for our next dog to grace the cover of CityDog Magazine and raising money for animals while we’re at it.

School Bake Sale for Hurricane Relief @ West Seattle Montessori School & Academy
Oct 16 @ 8:00 am – 9:00 am

Our middle school students are organizing a plan to help contribute to some of the rebuilding in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. They researched and found a Montessori school similar to ours in San Juan called La Casa Montessori. This school has 130 students and operates a preprimary through elementary age Montessori program. Their school building has been hit with major structural damage, and a loss of a portion of their roof. Our Spanish teacher Suely called the director of the school and was able to reach her on the first day she had phone service after the hurricane. She said several of her students’ families have lost everything, and that the destruction was everywhere. She was very grateful and encouraged by our call from one Montessori school to another in this extremely challenging time.

Throughout October we will be holding bake sales every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 am-9 am near the school arrival drop off area (11215 15th Ave SW) (NO Sales on October 13 or October 27 as middle school is not in session). Breakfast goodies will be available for purchase for $3 (or more if you’d like to donate more!). All proceeds will go directly to La Casa Montessori via their GoFundMe campaign.

Here is a link to their Facebook page as well.

There are Montessori schools worldwide, and this opportunity to connect with our own Global Montessori Community is a powerful reminder that all we need to do is extend ourselves just a little bit to make a life changing difference. Our students are truly leading mindfully and thinking globally with this fundraiser, and we thank you for your help in advance!
