Chief Sealth students’ Book-It ‘Page to Stage’ performances
Feb 9 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

All families and community members are invited to attend the 16th annual Book-It Page to Stage Residency at Chief Sealth International High School at 7pm on Thursday, February 9th. Freshmen in Mr. Azinger’s 9th grade classes will have spent 4 and a half weeks working with a teaching artist to stage and adapt student written poems.

After a week of on-your-feet, skills-based instruction, students work in groups to stage and adapt poems written by 9th graders from Ms. Griffin’s classes. Our students have truly grown as collaborators and thinkers as the initial reticence to work in groups was quickly replaced by a thoughtful exchange of ideas. The empathy and compassion that students show is delightful, even more so in that they are so focused on successfully presenting their adaptation of the poem. Please come enjoy the result of their hard work and growth on February 9th at 7 pm in the Auditorium at Chief Sealth International High School.

OPEN HOUSE: Little Pilgrim School, a program for children 2-5 years old

Sunday, February 12, 2017
11:00 am–1:30 pm

Celebrating more than 60 years of providing quality education in this community! Established in 1952, Little Pilgrim Preschool is nestled at the base of Fauntleroy Park in West Seattle. Our philosophy and purpose is to encourage the whole child – to help each to grow intellectually, spiritually, physically, creatively, socially and emotionally. Children enjoy a rich, play-based curriculum that not only prepares them for kindergarten, but also instills in them a lifelong love of learning. Whether we are finger painting, building with blocks, running on the playground or on a field trip to the neighborhood grocery, every experience is seen as a learning opportunity.

Bring the whole family to play, tour school spaces, meet the teachers, ask questions and pick up enrollment information for fall classes. For more information, please contact the Little Pilgrim School Director at (206) 932-5600, Lorrie@fauntleroyucc.org. www.littlepilgrim.org

Day of Remembrance at South Seattle College
Feb 15 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

****UPDATE FROM SSC: Professor Nomura is no longer on the program but Professor Sumida still is****

At South Seattle College (WSB sponsor)

This year’s Day of Remembrance marks the 75th anniversary of President Roosevelt’s signing of Executive Order 9066, which led to the evacuation and incarceration of 120,000 Japanese and Japanese-Americans to internment camps throughout the west coast.

South Seattle College will have two speakers on February 15 and an exhibit running until March 3 to commemorate the injustices and hardships during this time, and discuss how it relates to our society today.

Speakers Wednesday, Feb. 15 in the Olympic Hall Theater (OLY)

10 am – 11 am: Atsushi Kiuchi
Atsushi Kiuchi is an internment camp survivor. He will discuss events before, during and after Feb. 19, 1942, when Executive Order 9066 was signed. Kiuchi will also discuss the military exploits of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, comprised of American soldiers of Japanese ancestry who fought in World War II, and connect current events with his past experiences.

11 am – 12 pm: Professors Gail Nomura and Steve Sumida
Professor Gail Nomura and her husband Professor Steve Sumida are Japanese American. They recently retired as professors from the University of Washington in the American Ethnic Studies department with a focus on the Asian American experience. They will discuss the Japanese American experience during the time period surrounding Executive Order 9066.

Exhibition

Through March 3: Fred T. Korematsu and the Pursuit of Justice Exhibit in the Campus Library (LIB):

President Bill Clinton awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor in the United States, to Fred Korematsu in 1998, saying, “In the long history of our country’s constant search for justice, some names of ordinary citizens stand for millions of souls.”

Through photographs, archival documents and quotes, the Fred T. Korematsu and the Pursuit of Justice Exhibit tells Mr. Korematsu’s story of challenging the WW II exclusion and confinement order.

Korematsu worked as a shipyard welder after graduating from high school until he lost his job after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He was 22 when the U.S. plunged into war. On May 9, 1942, his parents and three brothers reported to the Tanforan Assembly Center, but Korematsu stayed behind with his Italian-American girlfriend. His refusal to comply with the evacuation order led to his arrest on May 30, 1942. His fight against the mass removal of Japanese Americans resulted in a landmark Supreme Court case concerning wartime civil liberties.

In 2011, California held its first Fred Korematsu Day, the first day in the U.S. to be named after an Asian American, commemorating his lifetime of service defending the constitutional rights of Americans.

The exhibit was created by the Seattle University Law Library for the launch of the Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality at Seattle University School of Law.

SSC is at 6000 16th SW on Puget Ridge; here’s the campus map, if you need help finding the buildings mentioned above.

Funding for public education may be stuck in Olympia, but here in West Seattle the music still swings, and our talented high school students want to share a few tunes with you at the annual Big Band Dinner Dance!

Tickets are on sale, and the community is invited. This evening of entertainment will feature West Seattle High School’s two jazz bands and the West Seattle Big Band. Delicious appetizers, dinner and desserts will be prepared and served by our students with the school’s cutting-edge Culinary Arts Program.

The night showcases of our students’ talents, and raises money to support the West Seattle High School Music Program–whose public funding does not even cover the annual cost of sheet music.

So dine, dance, applaud and enter to win restaurant certificates and other exciting raffle prizes at this annual celebration of West Seattle’s next generation of gifted musicians.

White Center Crab Feed fundraiser for Evergreen High School @ White Center Fraternal Order of the Eagles
Mar 4 @ 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Are you a White Center resident? Are you an Evergreen High School alum or supporter? Here is a chance to make a tangible difference for students at Evergreen High School–for the price of a fresh crab dinner.

White Center community leaders are recharging the Evergreen Wolverine Booster Club. This is a crab feed by the community, for the community, to eat delicious food together, listen to live music by Island Soul, and–don’t miss this part–raise money to benefit the students of Evergreen High School.

White Center Crab Feed
Saturday, March 4, from 5–9 pm
White Center Fraternal Order of the Eagles

Music by Island Soul.

Tickets: $25 in advance, $30 at the door.
Contact Pat Thompson at (206) 349-8106 or email pvthompson206@hotmail.com

The three small schools on the Evergreen campus are unifying as Evergreen High School starting next fall. The Evergreen Wolverine Booster Club is a partnership of parents, teachers, coaches, and alumni coming together to support students. The club has been dormant for a number of years. “The Evergreen community and school staff are making a valiant attempt to revive a once active and proud booster club,” said Terri McMahan, director of athletics for Highline Public Schools.

Two of the organizers behind the effort to rebuild the booster club are longtime White Center residents Pat Thompson and Tyrone Curry.

“We are rallying this community to come together to support the students who attend Evergreen,” said Curry. “Let’s establish a consistent network of supporters, volunteers, and fundraisers to lift our own boat and pull together for the good of these young people and this neighborhood.”

It’s simple really. It starts with a crab feed. It isn’t cheap, but then fresh crab isn’t cheap either. “And what price do you put on helping to even the playing field–maybe literally–for the young people of our community?” asks Thompson. “We are White Center. We have strength and community power and alumni that have barely been tapped.” Make plans for a fun, local evening out with live music, succulent crab, and the vibrant White Center community that describes itself as “not so white and not so centered!” A longtime schools supporter, the White Center Eagles are donating the venue and have secured a donation of crab from Alaska.

Evergreen High School is reuniting as a community hub with increased opportunities, a personalized experience, dual language, strong extra-curricular programs, and a world-class education. It’s a perfect time to send a powerful message to the students and staff of this local high school: “We ALL belong, and we believe in you!”

Not local but want to support the Evergreen Wolverine Booster Club? Contact Pat Thompson.

4th Annual Environmental Issues Slam @ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
Apr 20 @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

The 2017 Environmental Issues Slam event is sponsored by the Washington Foundation for the Environment (WFFE).

The Slam is a great opportunity for middle and high school students to channel their passion and concern for a local environmental issue into a short, creative, multimedia presentation that will inspire others to take action.

Student teams or individuals present their environmental issue in front of a live audience in the spirit of a “slam” style performance which is characterized by a short (5 minutes) informative and entertaining presentation. The Slam is intended to educate both the community audience and the students themselves as they research and develop their presentation.

Participants:
Students in grades 6-12
Educators or youth leaders who work with middle or high school students and will bring a team to the Slam.

Participants compete for two prizes: a People’s Choice Award determined by audience vote and a Judge’s Choice Award determined by a panel of experts in environmental fields.

“I have participated in the Environmental Slam for the last three years, and each time has taught me something valuable and useful that I doubt I could have learned elsewhere. Through the many issues that I researched, compiled information on, and presented to the audience I began to develop a passion for social change, leadership and participation. At my last Slam, my projects (Students for Sustainable Slopes) even won, and I continue to work on it to this day. The Slam provided me with a launching board to promote development in my community and as a consequence has made me feel like I have begun to successfully contribute to society and my future.”

Gatewood Elementary playground design presentation @ Gatewood Elementary Cafeteria
May 8 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Help us kick off Gatewood Elementary’s playground improvements!

The final draft design for the SW corner of our playground—based on student and community priorities—will be presented this coming Monday, May 8, 6-6:30pm in the school cafeteria just before the general PTA meeting. Karen Kiest, landscape architect, and Gatewood’s playground steering committee will present the design, explain next steps in fundraising and implementation, and take questions and final feedback from our community.*

And, we need your help to make playground improvements a reality!

To apply for a $100,000 implementation grant from the Neighborhood Matching Fund in June, we need to come up with $50,000 worth of community match in the form of volunteer hours, cash, and in-kind donations. Can you, family, and friends pledge volunteer time for work parties?  All ages welcome!  Can you offer a cash donation?  Are you a contractor who could help with heavy equipment or irrigation work?  Do you own a plant nursery or related business that could donate trees, soil, mulch, sod, or other needed materials for improvements?  How about food and drinks for work parties?  It all counts toward our match, so come and lend your support for playground improvements. If you can pledge to help but can’t make the meeting on Monday, please email Sandy Lennon at sandylennon@comcast.net.

On that note, save the date!  Second Gear Sports, (WSB sponsor)our West Seattle sports consignment store, is donating 10% of sales on Sunday, May 21, to playground improvements. Gear up for your summer sports on May 21 and help us on our way to a better playground.

*Playground design work has been generously funded by a Small Sparks grant from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods’ Neighborhood Matching Fund and the Gatewood PTA.

WSHS ’13th Year Promise Scholarship’ Student Showcase @ West Seattle High School
May 25 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

West Seattle High School (WSHS) invites parents and community members to attend “Career Connections: A Student Showcase,” on Thursday May 25, from 6-8pm at WSHS’s The Commons.

Over 100 students from WSHS’s Career Tech Education Department will share their creations with parents, Seattle Public Schools administrators, South Seattle College (SSC) , (WSB Spsonsor) faculty and staff, and community members.

The WSHS Jazz Band will provide music and culinary students will provide food.

At 6:20 pm, WSHS Principal Ruth Medsker will address students and SSC’s Julius Moss, 13th Year Promise Scholarship assistant director, will share information on the college scholarship and how WSHS tech students can prepare to take part in the program.

West Seattle High School (WSHS) will hold their “Career Connections: A Student Showcase” event on Thursday, May 25, where students in the Career Tech Education Department will showcase their creations in professional and technical fields, ranging from IT to culinary arts and automotive technology. Deans from South Seattle College’s  professional and technical career training programs and 13th Year Promise Scholarship staff will attend the showcase to talk with students about their career aspirations and provide details on the scholarship.

South’s 13th Year Promise Scholarship, which provides one year of tuition-free college and college success support services to graduating seniors from area high schools, is expanding to include WSHS starting with their Class of 2018. South offers numerous professional and technical career training programs (in addition to academic transfer programs) that match up well with WSHS’s Career Tech Education Department.

“WSHS has an extensive Career Tech Education Department that approaches teaching and learning from hands-on, project-based instruction,” said Helen Maynard, Career Center Specialist at WSHS. “We are unique in the (Seattle Public Schools) District because we offer a variety of opportunities for students to identify and launch careers in the professional and technical fields such as CAD design, woodworking, culinary, IT, auto mechanics, photography, music, health and human services, and business.”

With the 13th Year Promise Scholarship becoming available to WSHS graduates in 2018 and beyond, students interested in professional and technical fields will have the opportunity to continue their training at South with their first year of tuition covered by the scholarship.

Neighborhood Preschool’s 10th anniversary
Jun 10 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

ON Saturday, June 10, Neighborhood Preschool will be celebrating 10 years of nurturing and educating 3-5 year olds in West Seattle. In 2007, after years of working in many other child education capacities, Stephanie Thiele realized her dream of creating a small, intimate space that fostered creative learning. Her goal since then has been to help both children and parents gently transition from the early years at home to the larger world of elementary school, while at the same time cultivating curiosity and imagination.

Trained in early childhood and elementary education, Stephanie also sits on the board of Directors for the West Seattle Preschool Association and is involved throughout the community. Known for her creative, engaging, and nurturing approach, she’s seen whole sibling groups come through her doors over the years. She remains committed to offering a smaller more personal option for preschoolers, with no more than an 8 to 1 teacher-student ratio.

All those who love and appreciate Miss Stephanie and the work she does with West Seattle kids, are invited to drop by the Neighborhood Preschool June 10th between 1-4 pm.
The address is: 6902 35th Ave SW, Seattle
or if you have further questions feel free to call: 206-852-1542.

We’ll have other prizes for random scores, and more! Best of all, we’ll have a ton of fun while raising some funds for our great community!

Pre-registration deadlines are one week out from each event. Night of registrations are limited to whatever space is still available at the lanes.

Camp Philosophy
This is the 3rd year of the Soccer Skills Camp. Modelled after our long-standing basketball skills camp, now in its 18th year, the philosophy of the camp is to provide a positive and fun learning experience to youth by exposing them to the fundamentals of soccer and life, including the values and qualities that we feel are necessary to be successful in these arenas.

The camp will focus on three pillars, 1) skill development, 2) teamwork and leadership, and 3) life values and traits. We at Chief Sealth feel that in order to truly be successful student-athletes we must work equally in all three areas.

About Us
The camp will be directed by long-time boys and girls Head Soccer Coach, Ron Johnson. Johnson, who was named Metro Sound Boys Coach of the Year in both 2012 and 2013, has been the Seahawks head coach for 20 seasons. He has taken the boys on to the WIAA 3A Metro and State tournament multiple times. On the girls side, he has been the head coach since the program began and has built the program into a league contender, as the 2013 girls team finished 3rd in the Metro Sound League.

Coaching
The camp will be led by both current and past members of the Chief Sealth boys and girls soccer teams. They will provide coaching by exposing campers to the fundamental skills of the game through proven coaching methods. Our camp does not guarantee success as a player, but it will expose campers to the ingredients necessary to becoming a skilled player and successful high school student-athlete.

Accommodations
Each camper will receive a camp t-shirt. Campers must provide their own lunch. It is recommended that each camper bring his/her own water bottle, as water stations will be available for fill-up. Campers should also dress appropriately and consider sunscreen as we will be outside the entirety of the camp. The camp is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

It is requested that campers NOT bring their own soccer ball.

Shrek the Musical @ West Seattle High School
Aug 11 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Twelfth Night Productions (TNP) is proud to present SHREK THE MUSICAL.
“Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek….” and thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand… and his name is Shrek.
“SHREK THE MUSICAL is sweet and busy, nice and big, and, every so often, extremely lovable,” writes Newsday.

This production will be performed at West Seattle High School Theater, August 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7:30 and August 13, 19 and 20 at 3:00. Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets, and at West Seattle High School Theater, 3000 California Ave SW, an hour before the show on performance days. Prices are $23 for adults and $20 for students & seniors. http://www.twelfthnightproductions.org/

‘Pencil Me In For Kids FUNDrive’ @ WS YMCA
Aug 12 @ 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Let the magic of giving turn unneeded items into needed school supplies.

For the 22nd year, “Pencil Me In For Kids” is helping provide essential school supplies to West Seattle elementary students-in-need. This year we are raising funds in cooperation with Value Village.

The “Pencil Me In For Kids FUNDrive” is Saturday, August 12 from noon – 8 pm at the West Seattle YMCA in conjunction with the West Seattle Outdoor Movie, “Finding Dory”.

By donating gently-used clothing, shoes, accessories, book, linens, and small household items (no furniture), you can help provide the 13 West Seattle elementary schools with basic supplies such as black & white composition books, pencils, colored pencils, glue sticks, dry erase markers, pink erasers, washable markers, and pocket-file folders.

We get paid for every pound of goods donated and we use the funds to buy each school’s requested items.

Start collecting now. If you can’t get to the YMCA that day, we can arrange to pick-up prior to the 12th. For more information: Email Ann Avery at pencil.me.in.for.kids.2017@gmail.com

‘Bowling with Bowlies For Beds’ Fundraiser for Mary’s Place @ Roxbury Lanes
Aug 15 @ 7:00 pm

Registration info here:
AUGUST 15, 2017 – BOWLING WITH BOWLIES FOR BEDS
Fundraiser for Westside Baby, providing basics for children in need

The David Bowlie League invites you to bowl with the Bowlies this summer at Roxbury Lanes and help us raise some money to support community events and organizations.

Registration includes two hours of unlimited bowling (non-league style), shoe rental, beer/wine and snacks (while supplies last), and entry into door prize drawing. We’ll have other prizes for random scores, and more! Best of all, we’ll have a ton of fun while raising some funds for our great community!

Pre-registration deadlines are one week out from each event. Night of registrations are limited to whatever space is still available at the lanes.

(The events are ages, we love kids, and we’ll totally hold your baby, but be forewarned that the Bowlies also like to drink and swear. Sometimes loudly. It’s up to you to decide if that’s going to be appropriate for your kids.)
