Watershed Walks training @ West Seattle (Southwest) Library
Apr 27 @ 10:00 am – 12:30 pm

Watershed Walks provide an enjoyable way for people to learn about the relationship between their actions and a clean environment, as well as the opportunity to experience their environment and community in a different, more intimate way.

Attend a Watershed Walks training event this Spring 2013 and you’ll learn how to lead engaging, informative walks in your community with the goal of increasing the health of both local watersheds and neighborhood residents.

When: Saturday, April 27th, 2013, 10:00 am to 12:30 pm
Where: Meeting Room of the Seattle Public Library – Southwest Branch, 9010 35th Ave. SW, Seattle, WA 98126
Nearby Transit: MT Route 21

Did you know? In the past year, Feet First’s 20 Neighborhood Walking Ambassadors have led over 50 walks with more than 650 participants in 20 neighborhoods across Puget Sound. Join today!

The Watershed Walks Program is designed to train Neighborhood Walking Ambassadors how to educate residents about the importance of watersheds, using the natural ecology of Roxhill Bog and the Longfellow Creek/Duwamish River Watershed in West Seattle as a training case study.

At this training you will learn:

how to design and plan a watershed walk
how to effectively engage walking groups
what human-caused threats affect our watersheds
how individuals can reduce their impact on local watershed ecology
What: Neighborhood Walking Ambassador Watershed Walks Training

For more information or to register for this free training, contact Feet First Volunteer Coordinator Darcy Edmunds by emailing darcy@feetfirst.org or calling 206-652-2310, ext. 5. Participation is limited to the first 20 people. All individuals will receive a training packet including a full color watershed map of Longfellow Creek.

The Watershed Walks Program is made possible through a grant from The Russell Family Foundation.

Join the call for safer, more walkable communities by signing on to become one of your Neighborhood’s Walking Ambassadors!

Immigrant Rights & Family Safety Planning Workshop @ Roxhill Elementary
Apr 24 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

The Seattle Public Library is partnering with Colectiva Legal del Pueblo, Seattle Public Schools, and the ACLU of Washington, to offer immigrant rights and family safety planning workshops at two locations.

Library events and programs are free and everyone is welcome. Registration is not required. Workshops will be offered in Spanish and English. Spanish text is available in the Library’s Calendar of Events.

These workshops aim to mitigate the effects of a family member—many times the head of a family—being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Participants will learn how to develop a family safety plan, gather relevant documents to fight a deportation case and support someone who is detained.

By creating plans for children in mixed-status households, parents will be able to plan for the prospect of separation by designating temporary legal guardianship. At the workshop, families are guided through filling out general power of attorney documents that give authority to a spouse or another person to make decisions in the event of a separation.

Other topics covered will include the most recent updates on executive orders, as well as past policies, memos and executive orders that have shaped legal and ICE practices.

5 pm to 6:30 pm, Monday, April 24
Roxhill Elementary School, 9430 30th Ave S.W.

For more information, call the Library at 206-252-957 0r Ask a Librarian.

(A second workshop will be offered Monday, May 8 at the South Park Branch, 6 p.m. to 7:30 pm, 8604 Eighth Ave. S., 206-615-1688)

Workshop on Supporting Local Immigrants and Refugees @ Westside Unitarian Universalist Congregation
Jun 3 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

Pathways and Networks for Justice Workshop on Supporting Local Immigrants and Refugees

Please join us! Presentations will be provided by the following workshop partners: ACLU, Casa Latina, OneAmerica, Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Southwest Youth and Family Services

When: Saturday June 3rd from 10:00-1:00PM
Where: 7141 California Ave SW, Seattle, WA 98136 (Westside Unitarian Universalist Congregation, in the basement meeting hall)
Free registration at Brown Paper Tickets (please register for accurate participant count).

Summary of workshop:
The Trump Administration has taken multiple steps to target the immigrant and refugee members of our community, including: attempts to institute a Muslim Ban, denying federal funds to Sanctuary Cities, racist speech resulting in large increases in hate crimes, unjust deportations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to name a few. Many in our Greater Seattle community want to take action to help local immigrants and refugees; this workshop is designed to provide specifics on how to help.

This two-part workshop will: 1) provide a basic foundation for the current state of affairs for immigrants in the United States today, broken into four key areas, and 2) provide opportunities for community members and activists to learn about various organizations that are already mobilized to serve our immigrant neighbors within these four key areas (listed below).

Four key pathways to help local immigrants and refugees:
Path 1: Current Legislative Framework – the ACLU will provide an update on Trump’s attacks, including specifics as to how these proposed new laws and policies impact local immigrants, as well as ways we can fight back and advocate for policies reflecting a freedom/sanctuary community.

Path 2: Encountering Law Enforcement – it’s likely not a matter of “if” but “when” Federal law enforcement will amplify their actions against local immigrants. Casa Latina will discuss actions, strategies and tactics that are being developed to counter.

Path 3: Responding to Prejudice – Trump has unleashed much more free expression of prejudice, hatred and resentment through tactics of creating fear and encouraging blame against minorities. New laws and policies are being crafted that are rooted in racism and prejudice. OneAmerica will provide an overview of this dynamic and its impact on our communities. In addition, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) will provide a talk on the rise of Islamophobia.

Path 4: Meeting Basic Needs – Southwest Youth and Family Services will provide a talk on the most pressing needs for newly arrived immigrant families and their work around immigrant and refugee youth.

Additional immigrant/refugee support organizations invited to attend:Americans for Refugees and Immigrants; East African Community Services; El Centro de la Raza; Jewish Family Service; Northwest Immigrant Rights Project; Northwest Justice Project; Horn of Africa Services (HOAS); Open Doors for Multicultural Families; Refugee Woman’s Alliance; St. James Immigrant Assistance; Washington Community Action Network (CAN); White Center Community Development Association; World Relief Seattle.

Arthur’s first anniversary
Mar 28 @ 9:00 am – 10:00 pm

The Admiral restaurant/bar will celebrate its first anniversary on March 28th!

We have been overwhelmed by the support of our neighbors, friends, and family and to celebrate we’ve organized a day of giving back. Please join us as we celebrate the exact date one year ago that we opened our doors — with $3.28 house red and white wines, $3.28 lamb and vegetarian sandwiches, and $3.28 Lagunitas beers. AND, Aussie meat pies! As we give back to the neighborhood and family that have been so kind to us over the past year, we would ask to extend that giving spirit to our neighbors who may need it more than us. Please bring a donation for the West Seattle Food Bank — food, diapers, clothes, etc. — and Arthur’s will match the donations in cash. Thank you so much for all the wonderful kindness and support over the past year—we are so happy to contribute to the amazing network of bars, restaurants, and retail spaces that make up the North Admiral district of West Seattle.

Mioposto Dine Out to Cross Out Cancer @ Mioposto Pizzeria Admiral
Feb 26 @ 4:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Mioposto Admiral is hosting a Dine Out for a local nonprofit called Cross out Cancer next Tuesday, February 26th from 4-10pm. A portion of proceeds from the evening will be donated to the organization. Dine in, take out, delivery via Caviar, and retail sales are all ways people can support.

Cross Out Cancer is a non-profit organization that began in Tampa, Florida, almost three years ago in 2015. It was started by a high school junior, and their mission was to combine their love of cross country with the passion of serving pediatric cancer patients and to bring about awareness of childhood cancer. Fast forward to December 2016, Cross Out Cancer was established in Seattle and was on track to their first race in May of 2017! With a completely student-led board of 20 representatives from high schools across the Greater Seattle area, our board is largely made up of people with a particular interest or connection to childhood cancer.

Our goal is to bring about awareness of pediatric oncology and give high school students the opportunity to impact the members of their community. Our organization has joined with Seattle Children’s Hospital to host an annual public running event to unite the community in a common effort to support families battling cancer in the Seattle area.

SNAP Emergency Preparedness Workshop @ Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Hall, Walmesley Hall
May 4 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm

A SNAP Emergency Preparedness workshop is taking place for our 37th & 38th Block Watch neighbors and Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. It’s open to any West Seattleites that want to come.

The City of Seattle has created the Seattle Neighborhoods Actively Prepare (SNAP) program to help your neighborhood get organized in case of a major emergency, like an earthquake. We encourage people to not only prepare for themselves and their families but also talk to neighbors about how they will work together to make sure everyone in the neighborhood is safe and cared for.

Meeting Goals
• Meet new neighbors, share contact information, establish a meeting place
• Learn what to do to be better prepared
• Learn how to be safe in an earthquake
• Learn how to use the Help/OK sign
• Know your top three response priorities after a disaster

Please RSVP! Contact Helen at heleno@olgseattle.org

Bystander Intervention Workshop–Anti-Hate Alaska Junction @ Admiral Congregational Church
May 19 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Anti-Hate Alaska Junction works to reduce hate in our neighborhood by providing Bystander Intervention Workshops.

The leader reviews brain science, including the reality of emotional responses, their effects on brain chemistry, and the resulting triggering of our fight/flight/freeze survival responses. Participants apply new knowledge and practice new skills by running scenarios of hate-based interactions with the goal of de-escalating the situations. Working as an aggressor, a target, or an intervening bystander, participants learn by doing, not by listening.

There will also be an opportunity to have an extra practice session on Sunday, June 2 at 2:00 pm.

The workshop is FREE, but donations are accepted. To register, email antihate3@gmail.com or just walk in. Visit our website at www.antihatealaskajunction.wordpress.com

This workshop will be the third of four scheduled to take place in 2019.

June 5th will mark five years of tall-boy and tap-ginger
love that South Park brewers Kara Patt and Kyle McKnight have
cultivated, one account at a time. Served at Farmer’s Markets around
the Puget Sound and some of Washington’s best establishments, Timber
City is growing their footprint after five years.

“We love any excuse to have a party and five years definitely merits!”
Kara said. “The celebration will bring together all the good people
that have been supportive over the years. We hold a pretty tight
relationship with our vendors, and this event gives us a chance to
celebrate–with neither of us on the clock.” A delicious selection of
sides and a whole hog will be roasted by the Girls Gone BBQ crew and
Timber City Ginger, and raw and grilled oysters from friends at Hama
Hama Oyster Farm. Highly anticipated summer flavors will also be
released.

They share the brewery with friends at Lowercase Brewing who will also
be on tap. Be sure to catch a peak of their new koji house while
visiting. The koji is used in Timber City’s adult beverages, the South
Sound Pounder (5% abv) and their Imperial Ginger Beer (7% abv).

Reservations in advance through Eventbrite, and food and drink tickets
for sale at the door. Each ticket is $6 and will work with the different
vendors throughout the party. First come, first serve until capacity
is reached. Children and well behaved four legged friends are welcome.

ABOUT TIMBER CITY GINGER BEER

Washington and its undeniable bounty inspired local kids Kara Patt and
Kyle McKnight, founders of Timber City Ginger Beer of Seattle’s South
Park neighborhood. Timber City’s original brew recipe is brimming with
fresh ginger, lemon juice, cane sugar, sage, and thyme. They also produce
a fermented ginger beer–utilizing sake yeast and koji for
fermentation–keeping products gluten free. Timber City has
their flagship Imperial Ginger, and seasonal, sessionable South Sound
Pounder flavors, including but not limited to, local apples, fir tips,
peaches, strawberries, and pears. Timber City is self-distributed. For

Community and neighborhood groups interested in the fund are invited to attend.

The Neighborhood Matching Fund program has two funds:

  • The Community Partnership Fund provides funding up to $25,000 with three opportunities to apply a year. The deadline for the next and final round of 2019 is Monday, September 9.
  • The Small Sparks Fund provides funding up to $5,000 per project, and applications are accepted on a rolling basis through October 31.

Barter Your Homemade Items @ West Seattle Library Meeting Room
Dec 1 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Each month, an amazing group of people from Backyard Barter get together in different locations around the city and barter homemade items. In addition to the bartered goods, I come home with new ideas, recipes, and a greater appreciation for all things homemade.

Our December barter is in West Seattle, at the West Seattle Library.

I swap my homemade dark chocolate truffles, soap, and cheese for other people’s treasures. I typically come home with a box full of edibles such as jams, chutneys/sauces, flavored butter, chai, granola, pickled veggies, fresh/home-canned fruit, bread, honey, bitters, dried herbs, and nearly always delicious items for the week’s dinners.

And there are lots of non-edibles too, including pottery, salves/lotions, homemade greeting cards, original artwork, pillows, jewelry, knit items, indoor/outdoor plants, and more.

Some in the group barter services too.

There’s no cost to participate, no money exchanges hands. And the bartering is stress free. You ask if someone wants to swap your x for their y, and they either say yes or “no thanks.” And three-way trades are a good way to get what you want if there’s little or no interest in a direct trade. It’s a great way to save money and try new things, and there’s a variety of gluten-free, dairy-free and vegetarian items.

Children welcome.

In the first hour, barters set up, which may include pre-barter agreements as well as checking out the cool handmade items and making new friends. In the second hour, we quickly do our physical exchange and are usually done in thirty minutes.
