The Holy Rosary School Christmas Tree Sale
Nov 29 @ 9:00 am – 6:00 pm

From Holy Rosary School:

For the past 24 years in the waning days of November, right after we’ve savored the last bits of turkey, we magically become the Tree Lot Elves to sprinkle a little bit of Christmas tree joy to the people of West Seattle! Right off California Avenue at Dakota and 41st Avenue SW, we transform the Holy Rosary School playground into a festival of lights, of fresh-cut Christmas trees, of garlands and wreaths, and of the fresh pine smell that evokes memories of happy Christmases past.

November 29 – December 15, 2013

Santa has given us the charge of bringing cheer throughout our West Seattle neighborhood. So in that spirit, we share and have shared fifteen percent of the proceeds of our Sale to these local area charities:

Sarah Loertscher trunk show, launch, and sale @ Click! Design That Fits
Nov 30 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Saturday November 30, Sarah Loertscher trunk show, launch, and sale, 10 am–5 pm at Click! Design that Fits (WSB sponsor).

West Seattle jewelry artist Sarah Loertscher unveils two new jewelry collections, Ridgeline and Parallels, in a special launch event at Click! on Saturday November 30th, 10 am–5 pm. To celebrate Small Business Saturday the entire collection of Sarah’s work will be 20% off during the event only.

Ridgeline is an exploration of the simpler side – both of adornment and of form. This collection started as a re-creation of Loertscher’s very first production design, updated with bolder lines and a few mandatory facets. Ridgeline is a grouping of basics – rings, earrings, and bracelets – that are modern, simple, and easy to live in.

Parallels is both the same and yet the opposite: taking the simple – in this instance, the outline of the rectangle – and repeating this outline into moving forms. Loertscher’s fascination with structure stems from the way light interacts with shifting planes of material. These pieces explore this fascination, moving Loertscher’s work into moveable, cascading jewels.

‘Rollathon 2014’ skate-stravaganza fundraiser @ Southgate Roller Rink
Feb 9 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

From Arts Corps:

It’s time to dust off your roller skates and pull out your costumes! Arts Corps is gearing up for its second annual skate-stravaganza fundraiser, Rollathon 2014.

We will celebrate our fund-and-friend raising at the Rollathon on February 9, 5:00 – 7:00 pm at the Southgate Roller Rink. Tickets will be available at the door ($10 each) for non-team members.

Here are 4 quick reasons to get involved:

~ Community-Based Creativity: The skills we build through arts education are relevant in all areas of our life: imagination, critical thinking, risk-taking, persistence, reflection, and beyond!
~ Racial Justice & Arts Education: Our programs focus on educating and empowering young people, especially working-class youth of color, to directly address the racial disparities in access to arts education. Arts access is deeply connected to broader struggles for education reform and youth liberation.
~ Fun! – raiser: This event is going to be way fun and silly. There are costumes, prizes, roller-skating, team themes and more. What more could you need?
~ Grassroots Fundraising: Through creative fundraising, we are making this work sustainable and rooted in our values.

VIDEO//YOGA session @ Center Studio
Mar 28 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Center Studio (WSB sponsor) invites you to experience Video/Yoga:

VIDEO//YOGA is a yoga practice taught side by side with video art; creating an immersive visual and yogic experience that activates and engages all the senses. Guided by video art curator and yoga teacher, Julia Greenway, students engage in a stimulating and exciting yogic environment. VIDEO//YOGA programming has been previously implemented at The Vera Project, Fred Wildlife Refuge, and is part of the Henry Art Gallery’s yearly programming.

The space is activated through a large scale projection playing a looped reel of video art. The video art pieces are specifically curated to move with the sequence of yoga poses and overall flow of the class. Greenway is working alongside local, national and international video artists to curate 3 individualized reels entitled Light//Landscape, Desolate//Distopiaand Evolved//Pixelated. As a curator and teacher Greenway is creating an experience that successfully integrates video art and yoga practice.

Julia Greenway invites you to enjoy the enriching experience of yoga in an environment of freedom, creativity, and compassion. As an artist, curator, and traveler, yoga has always been her foundation. The practice allows her to build an ever-deepening connection with her physical and mental self, which in turn fuels her creativity and allows her to find ease. Julia is continuously seeking new and exciting ways to bring yoga to her students.

VIDEO//YOGA programming has been previously implemented at The Vera Project, Fred Wildlife Refuge, and is part of the Henry Art Gallery’s yearly programming.

WS Tool Library’s Festivus fundraiser gala @ SoDo MakerSpace
Dec 5 @ 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Now in its 5th year of providing free tools, advice and workshop space to the community on a donation basis, the West Seattle Tool Library is holding its second annual fundraiser.

The fundraiser, which will also serve as Sustainable West Seattle’s annual winter holiday party, will be held Friday, December 5, from 5-9 pm at the SoDo MakerSpace, 1914 Occidental Ave S. All net proceeds will go to the maintenance of tool library operations, as well as potential enhancements such as extended hours and more classes.

The fundraiser, continuing with last year’s theme of a “Festivus” party, will be a gala with a dinner buffet, beer, wine, soft drinks, music, a raffle, kid activities, and a tool sale. In addition, discounts will be offered on tool library lifetime memberships, and members who have tool library items they’ve been meaning to return will be offered amnesty for any returned tools. No fines and no questions asked!

Everyone is welcome. No cover charge except for a voluntary suggested donation for food.

Donations and volunteer help, including day-of setup help for the fundraiser, are still needed. If you are an individual or business with an item you’d like to donate for the raffle or are interested in volunteering, please contact us at library@wstoollibrary.org. Food and beverage donations are also welcome. Donors will be recognized at the event.

Since opening in the summer of 2010, the West Seattle Tool Library has built an inventory of more than 2,500 tools, signed up more than 2,000 members, facilitated over 13,000 loans, offered many classes and served as the home of the Fixer’s Collective and Ask an Expert night. It has been a model to many other tool libraries that have opened in the Puget Sound region and beyond, and received positive media attention as an example of the type of sharing economy projects needed to make the world more sustainable. It is a nonprofit project of Sustainable West Seattle. You can learn more and check out our inventory at www.wstoollibrary.org.

TAF Students Expo @ Bethaday Community Learning Space
Jun 6 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

Saturday, June 6, 10 am-1 pm, at TAF’s headquarters, Bethaday Community Learning Space, in White Center:

Dear neighbors,
How can robotic technology help people and communities in ways it has not yet? How might a mobile app help solve a common problem? What goes into building the speediest drag racer? Can you build a robot sumo wrestler? What does STEM mean to our youth today? All these questions and more will be answered by elementary and middle school students at the TAF Expo this Saturday.

The TAF Expo is an annual end-of-school-year exhibition event celebrating the accomplishments of TAF students. Kids and families who are curious about STEM learning opportunities in Southwest Seattle and want to see a sampling of what TAF and #STEMbyTAF are all about, are encouraged to attend. This year’s Expo is on Saturday, June 6, 10 am-1 pm, at TAF’s headquarters, Bethaday Community Learning Space, in White Center (605 SW 108th St., Seattle, WA 98146).

Here’s what you can expect to see at the Expo on June 6th:
~ Youth Inventions: innovative STEM solutions developed by 6th-8th graders from the White Center region
~ STEM Project-Based Learning at Mount View Elementary exhibition with 3rd-6th graders
~ Youth robotics competitions by 4th-6th graders: robot drag race, a fancy robot “catwalk” revue, and TAF’s ever-popular Sumo Wrestling Robot tournament!
~ Peer youth coding workshops led by young women from Girls Who Code
~ Hands-on STEM workshops for young children, provided by Pop-Up Science, a Seattle-based nonprofit mobile science museum (www.pop-upscience.com/)
~ More information about TAF Programs in White Center and beyond
~ Food, prizes, FUN!

Lunch will be provided. This is an all-ages family event; children who are not currently enrolled in TAF programs must be accompanied by an adult. White Center area youth who are currently in 5th and 6th grade, who may be interested in our middle school STEMbyTAF Labs program, and their families are especially encouraged to attend.

This is TAF’s seventh annual end-of-year Expo, and our third one at Bethaday Community Learning Space. A flyer for the event is attached. Email sarahw@techaccess.org for more
information, or call 206-725-9095×102. Learn more about TAF at

Jul 28 @ 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm

On the evening of Tuesday, July 28th, people on bikes throughout Seattle will ride and dine to raise funds for charity in the annual Spoke & Food biking and dining event. Billed as “an evening of dining & bikes”, Spoke & Food invites the residents of Seattle to bike to and dine at one or more of the many Seattle area restaurants and breweries that will each donate 20% of their total sales from the evening to this year’s event beneficiary, the non-profit road safety group Seattle Neighborhood Greenways. The event takes place from 5:00 pm to 9:0 pm, and is open to anyone who wants to attend. Riding bikes to area restaurants and breweries is ideal, but it is not a requirement for participation in this fun evening charity event.

Host locations in West Seattle & White Center:
West Seattle – The Westy
White Center – Proletariat Pizza

About the Seattle Neighborhood Greenways
Seattle Neighborhood Greenways is a safe street advocacy coalition representing 20 local neighborhood groups across Seattle. Volunteers in each neighborhood plan and advocate for safe and comfortable streets connecting people to the places they want to go. Volunteers lend their support to citywide projects including Vision Zero, Safe Routes to School, Pavement to Parks, Complete Streets, and Memorial Walks. More info at www.seattlegreenways.org.

About Spoke & Food
Spoke & Food is an annual event organized by a husband and wife duo who live in Seattle who want to do their part to create community. Having bicycled to and from dinner a lot prior to getting married, the couple wanted to share with others how fun and easy it is to ride to and dine out via bicycle while also creating an event that raises funds for well-deserving non-profits. A new non-profit is selected each year with past beneficiaries including Solid Ground, Seattle Tilth, FamilyWorks, Bike Works and the Outdoors For All Foundation. More info at www.spokeandfood.com.

Free concert, film tribute to WC poet Richard Hugo @ White Center Fieldhouse
Oct 11 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Presented by the Southwest Seattle Historical Society:

The famed native-son poet Richard Hugo will be given a jazzy tribute on Sunday evening, Oct. 11, 2015, at White Center Fieldhouse, sponsored by our organization and funded by 4Culture.

Named after one of his poems, “Some Places Are Forever Afternoon: A Tribute in Music, Words and Film to White Center’s Richard Hugo” will begin at 6 pm. Admission is free.

Helming the show is Rainier Beach composer and pianist Wayne Horvitz, whose Hugo tribute CD, released in July, has won raves in The New York Times and more than a dozen other journals.

The White Center concert is the ninth and last of a Hugo-themed Northwest tour and the only presentation whose admission is free. To be screened at the Oct. 11 show is the hour-long 1976 film on Hugo, “Kicking the Loose Gravel Home.”

Hugo (1923-1982) was an acclaimed poet who often wrote about his home. For more info on Hugo, click here.

The White Center Fieldhouse, constructed in 1938-1940 as one of five federal Works Progress Administration fieldhouses in King County, was named a King County landmark in 1984 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places earlier this year.

Celebration of First RainWise Mosque in Seattle @ Hope Academy and Alnoor Mosque
Nov 20 @ 11:00 am – 1:30 pm

ECOSS, Hope Academy and Alnoor Mosque are celebrating the first rain garden and cistern project at a mosque in Seattle and raising awareness about water quality.

The completion of this community teaching tool will be celebrated on Friday, November 20th, 11 am–1:30 pm, with festivities open to the public – including a ribbon cutting, garden tours and refreshments. While the primary goals of the project are environmental stewardship and flood prevention, this demonstration project also serves to educate students and community members.

The two rain gardens and four cisterns will divert rainwater from the large roof of the mosque (over 5500 sq. feet), keeping that water out of the combined sewer, which helps water quality downstream. It also provides both the Somali and White Center communities the opportunity to learn about and be involved with water quality solutions. Community members were also interested in resolving basement flooding issues from old downspouts around the historic brick building, as well as beautifying the landscape with flowers. High resolution photos of the project are available upon request.

For two years, ECOSS guided the mosque through the project by coordinating logistics, interpretation, troubleshooting issues such as old plumbing and drainage, teaching the students and staff about water topics, and engaging the community members in planning, plant selection, and work parties. The project was completed in June 2015 and the community is now developing a maintenance plan with teachers and students for regular checking, weeding and watering of the rain gardens.

“It’s been especially rewarding to have the community so involved in the project,” said King County Wastewater Treatment Division Director Pam Elardo. “We hope it inspires more young people to think about environmental career opportunities in the operations, science and technology fields.”

ECOSS collaborated with Seattle Public Utilities and King County on technical support, grants and RainWise rebates, which were provided by the City of Seattle. Additional funding was provided by the Russell Family Foundation and Google.

Hope Academy and Alnoor Mosque are located at 9421 18th Ave SW in the White Center neighborhood. The private school and mosque serves primarily Somali and other East African populations, although the mosque is open to all Muslims.

RainWise is a partnership program of Seattle Public Utilities and King County that offers rebates to property owners for rain gardens and cisterns which help to reduce polluted runoff and combined sewer overflows. A rain garden is a bowl shaped garden filled with spongy soil and hearty plants, designed to capture rainwater and cleans it before it enters our waterways or groundwater, and reduces the amount of water flowing into combined sewers or storm drains. Cisterns are large barrels that collects roof water, also reduce runoff, and the harvested water can be used for watering in the summer. To learn more visit www.700milliongallons.org.

Since 1994, ECOSS has engaged businesses and diverse communities with sustainable solutions for all on key environmental issues. ECOSS is the most effective organization in the region at engaging diverse communities in pollution prevention and other environmental solutions, with staff that speak 21 languages. ECOSS’ work revolves around working together to create a cleaner, healthier and economically thriving Puget Sound. Visit www.ecoss.org for more information.

White Center Crab Feed fundraiser for Evergreen High School @ White Center Fraternal Order of the Eagles
Mar 4 @ 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Are you a White Center resident? Are you an Evergreen High School alum or supporter? Here is a chance to make a tangible difference for students at Evergreen High School–for the price of a fresh crab dinner.

White Center community leaders are recharging the Evergreen Wolverine Booster Club. This is a crab feed by the community, for the community, to eat delicious food together, listen to live music by Island Soul, and–don’t miss this part–raise money to benefit the students of Evergreen High School.

White Center Crab Feed
Saturday, March 4, from 5–9 pm
White Center Fraternal Order of the Eagles

Music by Island Soul.

Tickets: $25 in advance, $30 at the door.
Contact Pat Thompson at (206) 349-8106 or email pvthompson206@hotmail.com

The three small schools on the Evergreen campus are unifying as Evergreen High School starting next fall. The Evergreen Wolverine Booster Club is a partnership of parents, teachers, coaches, and alumni coming together to support students. The club has been dormant for a number of years. “The Evergreen community and school staff are making a valiant attempt to revive a once active and proud booster club,” said Terri McMahan, director of athletics for Highline Public Schools.

Two of the organizers behind the effort to rebuild the booster club are longtime White Center residents Pat Thompson and Tyrone Curry.

“We are rallying this community to come together to support the students who attend Evergreen,” said Curry. “Let’s establish a consistent network of supporters, volunteers, and fundraisers to lift our own boat and pull together for the good of these young people and this neighborhood.”

It’s simple really. It starts with a crab feed. It isn’t cheap, but then fresh crab isn’t cheap either. “And what price do you put on helping to even the playing field–maybe literally–for the young people of our community?” asks Thompson. “We are White Center. We have strength and community power and alumni that have barely been tapped.” Make plans for a fun, local evening out with live music, succulent crab, and the vibrant White Center community that describes itself as “not so white and not so centered!” A longtime schools supporter, the White Center Eagles are donating the venue and have secured a donation of crab from Alaska.

Evergreen High School is reuniting as a community hub with increased opportunities, a personalized experience, dual language, strong extra-curricular programs, and a world-class education. It’s a perfect time to send a powerful message to the students and staff of this local high school: “We ALL belong, and we believe in you!”

The mission of the White Center Community Development Association (White Center CDA) is to promote a vibrant neighborhood and high quality of life for White Center residents and stakeholders through the development of authentic leadership opportunities, and community-led, neighborhood initiatives. We acccomplish this through our three lines of business: neighborhood revitalization, family development, and community building.

By developing programs and partnering with other organizations, we provide kids with positive role models and powerful life experiences to encourage their hope and vision for the future.

White Center Food Bank
http://www.whitecenterfoodbank.org/

The White Center Food Bank (WCFB) began in the mid-1970’s as an emergency response to assist struggling families and individuals in the greater White Center and Highline areas during a major economic downturn. The Mission of the White Center Food Bank is to minimize hunger, while nourishing community, nurturing self-reliance and embracing our rich cultural diversity.

WS Junction ‘Day of Giving’ fundraising event @ West Seattle Junction (see listing)
Apr 29 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm

In the West Seattle Junction this month: A “Day of Giving” on Saturday April 29th, 10 am–6 pm. Participating shops and restaurants will give 10 percent of their proceeds to nonprofits of their choice that day. From the West Seattle Junction Association:

Giving back has always been a part of what it means to be West Seattle. Our deep neighborhood pride comes through in everything we do and exemplifies the spirit of “neighbors helping neighbors.”

In The Junction, our local businesses are proud to give back throughout the year to the many deserving causes in our neighborhood and beyond. Within The Junction business community, there is a profound sense that it’s the right thing to do and that by supporting our local nonprofits we can strengthen our neighborhood and thrive.

In the spirit of that commitment, The Junction businesses are teaming up with their favorite nonprofits for a fun day of shopping and eating to benefit many important causes. On April 29th, each participating business will be donating 10% of their sales to the nonprofit of their choice. Stop by your favorite Junction retailers and restaurants to lend your support and make a difference through your purchases. It’s an easy and fun way to show your community spirit and just how much you care!

You can see the early list of participants, and their chosen recipients, by going to this page on The Junction’s website.
