Two Beers Brewing Company & Seattle Cider Company tasting event @ Metropolitan Market
Oct 17 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Stop in at Metropolitan Market/Admiral (WSB sponsor) Friday October 17th, 4–6:00 pm:

Seattle is lucky to be home to more than a fair share of breweries, but far fewer cideries forge spots in the landscape. Seattle Cider Company is owned and operated by the folks behind the popular Two Beers Brewing Company.

The first cidery since Prohibition in these parts, they scour the state for the best apples for each variety they make. In order to get the best flavor, they pick apples at the peak of freshness, press them, and hold the juice in barrels until it’s time to blend for target taste. The zero bris dry cider boasts an ephemeral “on and off the palate” flavor, which Dan Armerding (tasting room manager) says adds to its ability to go with “just about anything, especially foods like asparagus and fish.”

Their fall seasonal flavor, Pumpkin Spice, is definitely worth a second sip. With the inclusion of pumpkin in the pressing, co-owner Mark Satterly says they aimed for “full-on pumpkin flavor, but with an apple backbone,” keeping it more in the pleasing realm of a pie-spiced cider. The clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, and allspice flavors bring great complexity without a lot of sweetness.

Stop in to meet your favorite brewers while you sip their beers and nosh on snacks.*

* To join us for a complimentary tasting, you must be at least 21 and provide valid identification upon your onetime entry (no exceptions). Limited to food, four servings of wine or beer, and space available. Please note: final pour will be 15 minutes before the tasting is closed to ensure that you will have time to taste all the offerings.

WS Tool Library’s Festivus fundraiser gala @ SoDo MakerSpace
Dec 5 @ 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Now in its 5th year of providing free tools, advice and workshop space to the community on a donation basis, the West Seattle Tool Library is holding its second annual fundraiser.

The fundraiser, which will also serve as Sustainable West Seattle’s annual winter holiday party, will be held Friday, December 5, from 5-9 pm at the SoDo MakerSpace, 1914 Occidental Ave S. All net proceeds will go to the maintenance of tool library operations, as well as potential enhancements such as extended hours and more classes.

The fundraiser, continuing with last year’s theme of a “Festivus” party, will be a gala with a dinner buffet, beer, wine, soft drinks, music, a raffle, kid activities, and a tool sale. In addition, discounts will be offered on tool library lifetime memberships, and members who have tool library items they’ve been meaning to return will be offered amnesty for any returned tools. No fines and no questions asked!

Everyone is welcome. No cover charge except for a voluntary suggested donation for food.

Donations and volunteer help, including day-of setup help for the fundraiser, are still needed. If you are an individual or business with an item you’d like to donate for the raffle or are interested in volunteering, please contact us at library@wstoollibrary.org. Food and beverage donations are also welcome. Donors will be recognized at the event.

Since opening in the summer of 2010, the West Seattle Tool Library has built an inventory of more than 2,500 tools, signed up more than 2,000 members, facilitated over 13,000 loans, offered many classes and served as the home of the Fixer’s Collective and Ask an Expert night. It has been a model to many other tool libraries that have opened in the Puget Sound region and beyond, and received positive media attention as an example of the type of sharing economy projects needed to make the world more sustainable. It is a nonprofit project of Sustainable West Seattle. You can learn more and check out our inventory at www.wstoollibrary.org.

Bin 41 is celebrating 5 years w/ Local Winemaker Darby English on Friday April 3rd, 6-7:30 pm:

It’s hard to believe we followed our dream and opened the bin 5 years ago on April 1st, 2010! Darby is one of our local, West Seattle resident winemakers. A Seattle native, Darby began making wine in 2001 in the basement of an old farmhouse. In 2005 he bottled 200 cases of Syrah and in 2007 he outgrew the barn and moved his winemaking facility to the warehouse district in Woodinville. He is a true local, boutique winery producing around 3,500 cases per year.

Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/945426608836288/

From host Sara Beth Dye:

As many of you already know, I am raising money for Nepal’s Children Emergency Relief via UNICEF Australia. Nepal’s children face an unprecedented emotional toll as they deal with the devastating consequences of two earthquakes in the space of weeks. UNICEF has been on the ground since late April, but they still very much need our support. These funds will specifically go to shelter for children whose homes have been destroyed, clean water for drinking and washing to prevent further spread of waterborne disease such as cholera, healthcare including vaccinations and vitamins, hygiene kits and facilities, educational materials to use while schools are being rebuilt, and psychosocial support for children who have experienced profound stress like the loss of a parent.

Come join me for an evening of fun at The Lounge, a rustic and modern private event venue by Duos Catering. Enjoy cocktails, appetizers, free wine tastings from local wineries, raffle drawings, silent auction items and fabulous live music entertainment provided by the Robert Stewart Fiasco Band! (If you have never heard these guys play, you are missing out!) Tickets are $25.00, purchased at the door, and includes wine tastings, delicious appetizers, two raffle tickets, and that warm fuzzy feeling knowing you are helping a wonderful cause. Remember… it easily could have happened here.

Come and go as you please and feel free to invite whomever you would like! See you there. ;)

Special Fundraiser Tasting event @ Bin 41
Dec 9 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

New, special fundraiser tasting at Bin 41:

As we worked through the final details for the NW Hope & Healing tasting, we were touched close to home by the dreaded ‘C’ in our own lives. A coworker of Jon’s is undergoing a valiant battle with a rare form of cancer. To assist with medical expenses including travel costs, we are hosting a special fundraiser next month, on Wednesday December 9th from 6-7:30 pm. Our dear friends at Avennia have graciously signed up to showcase their new fall releases for this special evening.

Cara was diagnosed with stage IV Ocular Melanoma, an extremely rare eye cancer that has spread to her liver, in July of this year. She participated in an immunotherapy clinical trial starting that month but found out in October that it was unsuccessful and the cancer has grown and spread to her lungs. Now Cara and her husband Tobias are reaching out to the few oncologists in the country that understand and can treat this form of cancer which will likely require extensive travel for treatment.

We are hosting this fundraiser event to help with a portion of their travel expenses and to provide support when Cara and Tobias truly need it the most. Join us as we toast Cara and all that she means to us, her friends and family.

In addition to this fundraiser, Cara and Tobias have created a gofundme page. As the holidays approach, this is the time for sharing and giving assistance to those in need. Every little bit helps, even simply words of encouragement. We hope you will help FILL THE BIN on a Wednesday night to show your support for a wonderful, caring person in need. We will have a $10 tasting fee that is refundable as usual on a bottle purchase, but you can also choose to donate your fee to Cara and Tobias. The bin will be donating a portion of all sales during the tasting. If you cannot attend or wish to assist in addition to the tasting, please
visit their gofundme page at: https://www.gofundme.com/carajoy

The celebration begins on Thursday, Feb. 11 and runs through Feb. 13 from 12-6 pm each day and will be held at the Northwest Wine Academy (NWWA) on South’s West Seattle campus (map). All grapes for the NWWA student-produced wine were donated and locally grown in Washington State.

In the West Seattle Junction this month: A “Day of Giving” on Saturday April 29th, 10 am–6 pm. Participating shops and restaurants will give 10 percent of their proceeds to nonprofits of their choice that day. From the West Seattle Junction Association:

Giving back has always been a part of what it means to be West Seattle. Our deep neighborhood pride comes through in everything we do and exemplifies the spirit of “neighbors helping neighbors.”

In The Junction, our local businesses are proud to give back throughout the year to the many deserving causes in our neighborhood and beyond. Within The Junction business community, there is a profound sense that it’s the right thing to do and that by supporting our local nonprofits we can strengthen our neighborhood and thrive.

In the spirit of that commitment, The Junction businesses are teaming up with their favorite nonprofits for a fun day of shopping and eating to benefit many important causes. On April 29th, each participating business will be donating 10% of their sales to the nonprofit of their choice. Stop by your favorite Junction retailers and restaurants to lend your support and make a difference through your purchases. Art Walk event at Viscon Cellars with Words & Wine and Lindsay Peyton
Jul 13 @ 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Three Texas transplants are joining forces to show West Seattle that wine, art and literature make the best pairing.

Winemaker Ben Viscon, entrepreneur Jessica Trouillaud and artist Lindsay Peyton are planning a unique event for the next West Seattle Art Walk, beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 13 at Viscon Cellars, located at 5910 California Ave SW.

“We’re bringing three different forms of art together in a really fun and interesting way,” Trouillaud said. “And we’ve all migrated from Texas to West Seattle on different paths and walks of life to create art here.”

Matching the perfect wine with reading material is Trouillaud’s speciality – and she has built a business around her passion entitled “Words & Wine.”

Part book club, part online wine retailer, Words & Wine is designed to appeal to both wine lovers and bookworms.

Shoppers select a book they want to purchase and Trouillaud selects a wine to go with it. She includes a postcard explaining her selection as well as a bookmark with reading notes and tasting notes printed on it.

For the West Seattle Art Walk, Trouillard will select books that go with the wines available at Viscon Cellars.

And for visual pairings with Viscon’s fruit of the vine, oil paintings by Lindsay Peyton will be on the walls.

Peyton, Trouillaud, and Viscon not only share Texan roots; they also all work to create unique experiences through their craft.

“Lindsay’s paintings are incredibly expressive and beautiful,” Trouillaud said. “Ben’s wine is full of impressive character, each having a great background story. And with Words & Wine, I bring together literature and wine in a way that highlights each.”

Peyton said that in addition to great wine, the tasting room at Viscon Cellars has a special ambience, which makes it a natural fit for art and community.

“Viscon Cellars almost has its own life,” Peyton said. “People are more friendly there; they talk to each other, to strangers. Ben has made it a gathering space for friends and neighbors, with a warm, inviting feel. I hope my paintings are the same way – so that viewers feel like they can walk into the interiors and spend time there.”

It is no coincidence that Viscon Cellars has become an art gallery and venue for the West Seattle Art Walk.

Showcasing local artists has been a part of the vision owner Ben Viscon has had for his tasting room from the start.

“I love the arts,” he said. “My family owned some art galleries in El Paso, where I grew up. My dad had a kind of combination art gallery and artist supply studio that he owned and ran. As a kid, I worked with him all the time on weekends and summer breaks. I gained an appreciation for all forms of art.”

He wants to help local artists share and sell their work.

“Now that I am a small business owner myself, it is important to me to support art,” he said. “I want to feature local artists and help them tell their story. It is also a conversation piece with my customers. They come in for the wine, and then they start noticing the walls are full of beautiful art and start asking questions.”

Viscon said Trouillaud’s pairing of wine and literature was a natural fit.

“After hearing Jessica’s story and enthusiasm, I had proposed that we have her match up a couple of my wines with books and put some packages together,” he said. “Then we decided to add in another Texan by featuring Lindsay and her amazing talent during the art walk.”

“Alizah’s pieces speak to so many of our customers,” said CAPERS owner Lisa Myers. “In fact, one of our clients snapped a photo of a beautiful silver necklace she wanted and sent her husband back to buy it for Christmas!”

A West Seattleite born and reared in White Center, Olivas began creating jewelry about 10 years ago. With support from her husband, family and friends, she has been learning and crafting jewelry ever since, attracting many collectors in the area.

“Whether it's a new gemstone I’ve found, a new shape I want to create, or a combination of the two, making each new piece is simply fun. If I’m smiling when I’m done with a piece, I’m hoping you’ll be smiling while wearing it,” said the proud lab owner of George and Gracie, who keep her company while she works.

Silver has always been Olivas’ favorite metal to wear and work with.

“The bright reflectiveness makes me happy and adding semi-precious stones only makes it better. Hopefully, my jewelry brings a brightness to your day,” shared Olivas.

For more, stop by CAPERS in-store at 4525 California Avenue Southwest in West Seattle, see our December calendar of events or visit www.alizahsjewelry.com.

Men’s Fellowship Luncheon @ Masonic Hall
Mar 30 @ 12:00 pm

Event: Men’s Fellowship Luncheon.
Donation: Free
Where: Masonic Hall, 4736 40th Ave. SW
When: Friday, March 30, 2018. Doors open @ Noon.

Purpose: This is not a Masonic event, although the members of the Masonic Lodge are preparing the meal and providing the facilities–and we express our appreciation for their hard work. It is also not a religious event, although men of Christian faith may wish to include this luncheon as part of their Good Friday remembrance. There will be no formal program. Instead, this is an opportunity for all men of our West Seattle community to gather together, and share a great meal and fellowship. Meet your neighbors and fellow workers. Newcomers and those in need especially welcome. If we succeed this first year, we plan to make it an annual event. So your attendance will be critical. (And, if someone wants to do the work needed to organize a similar Women’s luncheon, the sponsor would be happy to sponsor that as well).

RSVP: Not required; however, RSVP to martinmonk@yahoo.com or 425-681-5024, will be appreciated to help us plan the amount of food needed.
