Lou Whittaker to speak at WSHS and screens documentary @ West Seattle High School
May 19 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Lou Whittaker to speak at West Seattle High School and screen documentary, “A Life in the Mountains.”
– – –

Join renowned mountaineer and West Seattle native Lou Whittaker for a special presentation, “A Life in the Mountains,” at 6:30 pm Monday, May 19, 2014, at West Seattle High School Theater.

The event is a fundraiser for the Southwest Seattle Historical Society.

Whittaker will speak about his West Seattle roots and screen an hour-long documentary, “A Life in the Mountains: The Legacy of Lou Whittaker.” He is especially pleased to make this presentation at his alma mater.

One of America’s most respected climbers for more than six decades, Whittaker began his mountaineering career as a teenager in the Pacific Northwest, climbing in the Olympic and Cascade ranges with his twin brother, Jim.

Whittaker’s name is synonymous with Mount Rainier, where he has guided thousands to its summit since his own first ascent of the mountain at age 19. He stepped naturally into coveted spots on expeditions to formidable peaks in Alaska, the Himalaya and the Karakorum and went on to lead the expedition that made the first American ascent of the North Col pass on Mount Everest in 1984.

The documentary film examines the impact of Whittaker on the sport of mountaineering and how his efforts have changed the sport’s landscape. It features stories from Whittaker, his family and climbing luminaries Sir Edmund Hillary, Sir Chris Bonington, Jim Wickwire and John Roskelley Sr.

Admission to this event is $10 for members of the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, and $15 for others. Annual memberships, available
at the event, start at $25, with a rate of $15 for students and seniors.

Whittaker’s book, “Lou Whittaker: Memoirs of a Mountain Life,” will be on sale at the event, with 50 percent of proceeds going to the historical society.

For more information on Whittaker, see his website, louwhittaker.com, and for more information on the event, see the Southwest Seattle Historical Society website, loghousemuseum.info.

ADDED: Legendary mountaineer Jim Whittaker will be joining in.

Join us at West 5 Lounge and Restaurant in West Seattle on July 16th (6-9 pm) for a charity happy hour and raffle benefiting the Mount Rainier search and rescue program! Last summer a team of Mount Rainier climbing rangers rescued a group of five friends who were also REI co-workers’ during a blizzard, likely saving our lives. West 5 is graciously hosting a fundraising happy hour and donating a percentage of their proceeds to the team, including 100% of all Rainier beer sales. All you have to do is show up and drink beer to help the rangers out!

The event is open to everyone, and we would LOVE to see each of you there! Come say hi and have a beer.

“Kicks for Kids” collection drive @ Windemere West Seattle

Windermere Collecting Donations for “Kicks for Kids” Sneaker Drive – Sizes 1-9 sneakers can be donated at any Seattle-area Windermere Real Estate location August 1- 15 or at Windermere Summer Splash event at Green Lake on August 16

Windermere offices in the greater Seattle area are serving as collection centers for the company’s “Kicks for Kids” sneaker drive for low income youth. Beginning August 1, new or gently used sneakers in kid’s sizes 1-9 can be dropped off at any Seattle area Windermere office. You can also bring them to the Windermere Summer Splash event on Saturday, August 16 at Green Lake, where Gentle Giants Moving Company will collect the sneakers and deliver them to King County Boys and Girls Club, and Mary’s Place, in time for the first day of school.

“Studies show that when kids feel good about their appearance, it improves both their self-esteem and their performance in school,” said OB Jacobi, president of Windermere Real Estate. “We think every child deserves to start the school year on the right foot, so with the public’s help, we’re determined to make that happen for as many kids as possible.”

The two-week Kicks for Kids sneaker drive will end on August 16 at the Windermere Summer Splash event at Green Lake. Together, with partners Seattle Parks and Recreation and the George Pocock Rowing Foundation, this free, daylong event will celebrate summer fun and healthy activities for families.

Ron and Shaa Ackerson Fire Relief fund: Raise $$ to help reunite Ron’s family and cover the costs of the tragic fire that took his home.

Our employee Ron Ackerson recently lost his home due to a fire July 17th, 2014. Ron and his wife Shaa are a blended family of 15 made up of Ron’s 5 kids, Shaa’s 4 kids, and their 3 children together. Additionally, Shaa’s little sister died in 2011 and they have full permanent full custody of her daughter, and Ron’s sister became mentally ill and they have full permanent custody of her daughter.

Due to the tragic fire, Ron’s family is now separated because they are homeless. Our heart breaks for Ron and Shaa, they cannot stand to be apart because they have always been a tight knit family unit.

Their goal is to be able to donate 34 backpacks filled with school supplies to Highland Park Elementary and are collecting donations until August 17th. EarthCorps volunteer event at Terminal 105 Park
Aug 16 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

EarthCorps volunteer event at Terminal 105 Park August 16th, 9 am-12 pm:

Join EarthCorps and the Port of Seattle as we restore this site along the Duwamish River. Terminal 105 restoration construction was completed in 1995; prior to that, the narrow property was used as driveway and parking lot. Now it is a Port of Seattle public access site with picnic tables, a hand boat launch, and a small natural area. Environmental stewardship activities began in 2000. EarthCorps is working with the Port of Seattle to remove additional invasive weeds along the main river channel and replace them with native plants.

EarthCorps supplies gloves, tools, water, light refreshments and volunteer education that covers safety, information on the park you are working in, forest health, environmental restoration and the overview of the project. No prior experience is necessary, just come ready to learn something new!

Tyrone “The Working Class Hero” concert & school supply donation drive @ WSC Performance Hall
Aug 23 @ 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Unified Outreach and the “C.I.A. Music Group” presents Tyrone “The Working Class Hero” live in concert; an event to raise awareness and school supplies for foster children.

The concert takes place on Saturday August 23rd, 5–9 pm at the WSC Performance Hall. The sound of Tyrone’s vocals are unique and with incredible music production it is simply incomparable. He is upbeat and raps about real situations that that we relate to and normal people go through. He has charted three records in the last six months and has synced background music for Adidas commercials and Outdoors.com. Come out to see Seattle artist Tyrone perform for a good cause.

The event is also a spotlight for the local foster programs. Some of the youth that are a part of Unified Outreach summer work training program are from foster homes so the event hits close to home. We are collecting school supplies; folders, binders, pens, pencils and back packs to give back to foster home students. There will drop off bins for school supplies as people come into the event. Come out and enjoy the music, support the youth in the program and give back to your local foster homes.

The C.I.A. Music Group, AKA (Creative, Intelligent Ambitious) is built up of a group of youth from the community that are a part of Unified Outreach’s summer arts program. The group came together through a summer work training program that provided the opportunity and work experience in, event planning and event management skills. The entire event, press release, flier and poster were created by the youth in the program.

Bob’s Bowl-A-Rama fundraiser @ West Seattle Bowl
Aug 28 @ 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm

From Ingrid at Georgetown Brewing Company:

The event is called Bob’s Bowl-A-Rama, and it is the final event of our fundraising for Ronald McDonald House Charities for 2014.

Charles “Bob” Hirsch was the inspiration for our beer, Bob’s Brown Ale. Manny, one of Georgetown Brewing Co.’s founders, met Bob when he was a counselor at Camp Goodtimes and Bob was a camper. Bob fought cancer for half of his life, and when he passed away, the company decided to brew a beer in his honor and donate all of the proceeds. Bob’s mom chose RMHC as the recipient charity for our donation saying “They put us up for treatment every time we came in from Alaska.” For the past 9 years, we’ve released Bob’s Brown Ale on Bob’s birthday, May 14th, and have raised over $400,000 to date. Even if folks can’t buy a lane, even if they just come out for a pint of Bob’s Brown Ale and buy a raffle ticket, that would be great.

Bob’s Bowl-A-Rama starts at 7 pm Thursday August 28th at West Seattle Bowl and if you’re interested in a lane, sign up ASAP – here’s all the info.

‘Wine Tasting’ fundraiser for Furry Faces Foundation @ Ola Salon
Oct 5 @ 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Save the date – October 5th from 3-6 pm! From Teri Ensley at Furry Faces Foundation:

It’s a Wine Tasting! Here’s how it works:
Each person brings a bottle of red or white wine. Upon arrival it is wrapped in foil and assigned a number, with the ‘type of wine’ written on it, e.g., Merlot (you need to remember the number of your bottle). Reds and whites are separated onto different tables. You walk about with your (F3 provided) wine glass, mingling with really cool people, pouring your own tastes. Write your thoughts on your (F3 provided) tasting card.

At the end of the evening, you vote for your favorite wine of the evening and turn it in. We tally the votes. There will be a gift card prize for the #1 Red and the #1 White. There will be some nibbles and noshes, however, you may want to eat a good lunch ahead of time because if say 50 people attend…that’s 50 bottles of wine to taste!

This event is to help raise the funds for Furry Faces Foundation’s 501(c)3* $800.00 application fee. We will have a suggested donation amount at our check in table…something reasonable like $10ish. It’s only suggested; not required to attend. The donation jar will not be on the check in table–it’ll be in some other, super cool place, so there is no pressure.

* We are a Washington State Charity/non-profit and have decided to apply for our 501 (c) 3 status.

Admiral Church Organ Fundraiser @ Admiral Congregational United Church of Christ
Oct 25 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Admiral Congregational United Church of Christ has a long history. Founded in 1899 as West Side Congregational Church, when the original church was dedicated in 1901, on the site of what is now the Admiral Church parking lot, it was the first church building in West Seattle. The current building was completed in 1961 and eventually renamed Admiral Church.

A pipe organ for the new sanctuary was commissioned in 1961 from Balcom and Vaughan organ builders. The pipes came from Holland, the blowers from Switzerland. It has 21 ranks consisting of 1,111 pipes. The purchase price was $12,000. The organ is currently valued at $400,000.

The 52-year-old organ has been loved and appreciated by generations of Admiralites. It is now in urgent need of renovation and repair. Admiral Church began “The Year of the Organ” in April of this year, with the goal of raising the needed $50,000 by April, 2015. Over $30,000 has been given and pledged so far.

On Saturday, October 25 at 3 pm, as part of “The Year of the Organ”, Admiral Church is hosting a benefit concert. Among the talented Seattle celebrities who will be supporting Admiral with their performances at this concert are jazz piano legend Overton Berry, gospel matriarch Grace Holden, and Admiral’s own fabulous organist, Keith Terhune. After the concert there will be a champagne reception and a chance to donate to the organ restoration fund.

Pancake breakfast fundraiser for Women’s Enterprises International @ West Side Presbyterian Church
Nov 15 @ 8:30 am – 11:30 am

Are you eating breakfast this coming Saturday, November 15th, from 8:30 to 11:30 am? Then come enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast including coffee, bacon and fruit; all while helping bring clean water to families who desperately need it! West Side Presbyterian Church will host a pancake breakfast for Women’s Enterprises International (WEI).

All proceeds from the breakfast helps WEI, a Seattle based non-profit that matches funds raised by organized women’s groups in Kenya. These groups use the funds to buy rainwater catchment tanks for their homesteads and their communities. Without the tanks, women as young as 12, walk for hours each day to bring unclean water to their families and then they have to treat the water. Rainwater is clean and available if it can be caught.

Come meet the organization’s co-founder. We look forward to seeing you and are suggesting a donation of just $5 per person or $20 per family. No obligation!

College Street Ravine work party with Dow Constantine
Nov 15 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Volunteer at College Street Ravine with Dow Constantine

Dow Constantine is a West Seattle local who got his start in politics through his environmental work with the Friends of the College Street Ravine many years ago. Before becoming King County Executive, Dow worked with his local community to save the five-acre green space from threats of development.

After Dow was elected, he asked Nature Consortium to continue the work he started at College Street Ravine. Since 2010, we’ve celebrated Dow’s birthday, and sometimes half-birthday, with live music and community service.

This year, we invite you, your family, and your neighbors to volunteer with Nature Consortium to plant trees and shrubs in the ravine and remove invasive weeds to help our local habitat heal. Volunteering is an excellent way to meet neighbors, enjoy the outdoors, and support the community we all share.

When: Saturday, November 15, 10 am to 2 pm
Where: SW College Street and 51st Avenue SW

Register Here:
www.naturec.org/volunteer/dow-constantine-day/

No experience is necessary, and Nature Consortium will provide the tools and training you need to work. Live music for the event will be provided while you work by local trombonist Marc Smason.

In addition to Dow’s birthday, you can also join Nature Consortium at College Street Ravine on the first Tuesday of every month. Visit www.naturec.org/volunteer to RSVP.

Bamboo Workshop and Garden Tour @ Seattle Chinese Garden
Apr 4 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Bamboo Workshop and Garden Tour
organized by
American Bamboo Society & Seattle Chinese Garden
Saturday, April 4, 2015
10 am to 3 pm:

Do you know that the Seattle Chinese Garden is maintained by volunteers? And that it is one of the Northwest’s most unusual gardens? Gardeners of all experience levels are welcome to attend a special work day focused on bamboo.

• Tour the 5-acre grounds with head gardener Bob Seely. Learn about authentic Sichuan-style garden design and plants native to China, and see more than 400 tree peonies plants on the verge of blooming.
• See the Garden’s 13 varieties of bamboo and learn the difference between running and clumping types.
• Meet James Clever, Seattle-based bamboo gardener, nurseryman, and American Bamboo Society past president.
• See a demonstration of tools for pruning, thinning, mulching, tending bamboo so it looks magical in the garden.
• Learn about pests and good bamboo grove maintenance practices.
• Help construct a simple fence out of bamboo branches and culms. Try your hand at bundling, tying, and attaching the bundles to our fence frames with simple techniques suitable for use in your own garden.
• Help with the removal of old, dead, weak, or damaged canes and side branches in an unmaintained reserve grove. Help bring us up to tip-top condition for bamboo shooting season.

Wear work clothes and shoes. Please bring your own tools including gloves and safety glasses. Those who want a hands-on experience should bring pruning shears, loppers, and pruning saws.

Please Bring your lunch and a beverage. Cookie bakers and sharers are especially welcome! Let’s make new friends and talk about bamboo. If we get some projects done, that’s great too!

After the workshop ends, we’ll offer an optional walk through the adjacent 5-acre South Seattle College Arboretum. It has a fantastic plant collection and is an American Conifer Society reference garden ~ a must see in spring.
LOCATION:

6000 16th Avenue SW in West Seattle • South Seattle College North Entrance

Visit seattlechinesegarden.org for directions. The garden is six minutes from the Delridge exit off the WS Bridge.

Parking is free on 16th Ave SW and is available on campus for $3 at the ticket machine.

May 24 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor) will host a fundraiser for Nepal on Sunday May 24th:

Silent Auction and Fundraising Party being held to benefit Nepal at C&P Coffee Company

The death toll in Nepal has risen to 7,500 and is expected to reach nearly 15,000. The earthquake that hit the country on April 25th, left 8 million homes to rebuild along with 800 schools. Many of these homes are in rural areas that have yet to receive aid, just before the country’s monsoon season begins.

Money raised from the event will support ‘Changing Lives Nepal’, a nonprofit organization, entirely volunteer run. When the earthquake hit, ‘Changing Lives Nepal’ founder, Deana Zabaldo and assistant leader, a West Seattle resident, Stewart Wolfe was guiding their team to Everest Base Camp for West Seattle based company, Mountain Madness. The entire team is safe, and without injury. ‘Changing Lives Nepal’ has many programs to help the people of Nepal, which now includes the rebuilding and reconstruction of the homes and schools that need attention.

Come spend the evening with us, as we do our part to help make a difference. The auction items are rolling in from business such as Mountain to Sound Outfitters, Thunder Road Guitars, Alki Bike and Board, West Side Music Academy, 8 Bit Arcade, original art work, and so much more! There will be live music, beer and wine, and some surprises!

Jul 28 @ 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm

On the evening of Tuesday, July 28th, people on bikes throughout Seattle will ride and dine to raise funds for charity in the annual Spoke & Food biking and dining event. Billed as “an evening of dining & bikes”, Spoke & Food invites the residents of Seattle to bike to and dine at one or more of the many Seattle area restaurants and breweries that will each donate 20% of their total sales from the evening to this year’s event beneficiary, the non-profit road safety group Seattle Neighborhood Greenways. The event takes place from 5:00 pm to 9:0 pm, and is open to anyone who wants to attend. Riding bikes to area restaurants and breweries is ideal, but it is not a requirement for participation in this fun evening charity event.

Host locations in West Seattle & White Center:
West Seattle – The Westy
White Center – Proletariat Pizza

About the Seattle Neighborhood Greenways
Seattle Neighborhood Greenways is a safe street advocacy coalition representing 20 local neighborhood groups across Seattle. Volunteers in each neighborhood plan and advocate for safe and comfortable streets connecting people to the places they want to go. Volunteers lend their support to citywide projects including Vision Zero, Safe Routes to School, Pavement to Parks, Complete Streets, and Memorial Walks. More info at www.seattlegreenways.org.

About Spoke & Food
Spoke & Food is an annual event organized by a husband and wife duo who live in Seattle who want to do their part to create community. Having bicycled to and from dinner a lot prior to getting married, the couple wanted to share with others how fun and easy it is to ride to and dine out via bicycle while also creating an event that raises funds for well-deserving non-profits. A new non-profit is selected each year with past beneficiaries including Solid Ground, Seattle Tilth, FamilyWorks, Bike Works and the Outdoors For All Foundation. More info at www.spokeandfood.com.

He inspired countless thousands with his hands-on helming of the Log House Museum’s back (south) wall in 1996-1997. His craftsmanship on behalf of the museum is highlighted in a 6-minute video that is viewable at http://www.loghousemuseum.info/events/welcome-back-david-rogers/.

Seal Sitters new volunteer training @ Alki UCC
Aug 15 @ 10:00 am – 12:30 pm

Seal Sitters Marine Mammal Stranding Network will hold a new volunteer training on Saturday, August 15, 2015, from 10 am–12:30 pm.

When: Saturday, August 15, 2015
Time: 10 am–12:30 pm
Training starts promptly at 10 am (please arrive early: doors open for
registration and paperwork at 9:30)

RSVP required (see below)

Help protect wildlife! Volunteer with Seal Sitters Marine Mammal Stranding Network. On Saturday afternoon, June 13th, we will be holding a special training for those wanting to protect marine mammals along the shoreline of West Seattle and the Duwamish River. Unlike most marine mammal stranding networks, we encourage children to participate in Seal Sitters – supervised at all times, of course, by a parent or guardian. We are so proud of our amazing and dedicated volunteers who are on duty rain or shine – we hope you will join us!

A multi-media presentation will illustrate Seal Sitters MMSN’s educational work in the community and the unique challenges of protecting seals and other marine mammals in an urban environment. Included in the training is an overview of NOAA’s Western Region Marine Mammal Stranding Network and biology and behavior of seals and other common pinnipeds.

FOR MORE DETAILS ABOUT LOCATION AND TO RSVP, visit Seal Sitters’ event page. RSVP is required to assure seating. (Please include full name and name/ages of children)

Seal Sitters MMSN averages 200 responses each year to reports of marine mammals (large or small species, dead or alive) on the beach. 90% of those responses are to vulnerable harbor seal pups during our busiest time of year – late summer and fall. Pupping season is now underway in South Puget Sound and Seal Sitters has responded to 4 newborn pups since the end of May. We are happy to say that one of those pups, Little Dipper (abandoned and rescued from Lincoln Park) is doing well in rehab at PAWS Wildlife Center. Visit www.blubberblog.org to learn more about Little Dipper and Seal Sitters’ recent activities.

Please join us on August 15th and help ensure that seal pups and other marine mammals can rest safely on our beaches. Due to time constraints of volunteers during the height of pupping season in West Seattle (usually August – October), this will be our final training for this season until later in the Fall. We hope you can attend!

Washington State Animal Response Team Fundraiser @ Beveridge Place Pub
Aug 27 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Engine House #9 Brewer’s Night & Fundraiser for Washington State Animal Response Team!

Drink great beers for a great cause! We scheduled this brewer’s night with Engine House #9 several weeks ago with an amazing line-up of Belgian-style brews in mind. The proliferation of wildfires throughout the state prompted us to combine BPP’s two passions — enjoying awesome beer and helping animals!

We’ll have 9 beers on from E9 (see what we did there?), including all four releases of their Ferme Agrume Farmhouse series, plus award winning beers like Golden Berry Wild, Tacoma Wild, and Nefelibata Flanders Red! In addition to donating $1 per glass of E9 brews, we’ll be raffling off some cool glassware and t-shirts from numerous breweries! These funds will be donated to Washington State Animal Response Team.

The Washington State Animal Response Team is a 100% volunteer organization that assists in rescuing domestic animals in emergency situations. They have opened an emergency companion animal shelter in the Okanagan to help people who needed to evacuate their homes take care of themselves by taking care of their animals for them.

West Seattle Big Band’s Benefit Concert for the MS Society @ Senior Center of West Seattle
Oct 3 @ 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

You can make a difference, and enjoy live music from the West Seattle Big Band at the same time! The third annual Dance MS is being held at the West Seattle Senior Center on Saturday, October 3rd, from 7-10 pm. Come ready to dance, or just to listen to some great music.

The event also includes a small live auction, and several silent auction items, ranging from coffee at C&P to vacation packages to drum lessons. All of the event proceeds will go toward the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, since event expenses are either covered through the band or donation.

You may know the West Seattle Big Band from our connection to the Seattle schools: while we perform for events such as weddings and concerts throughout the Seattle area, rather than taking pay, musicians in the band donate any income back to assist school band programs, primarily in the West Seattle area.

Dance MS strays from the band’s mission statement, but holds a special meaning for the group. In 2012, our piano player Brooke Yool was diagnosed with MS. She asked for the band’s support and arranged the first Dance MS in 2013, and the event was a huge success.

So, we ask for your support to make the third Dance MS even more successful than the first two. In order for this to happen, we ask you—the local community—to help us in the fight against MS.

Come down to the West Seattle Senior Center on Saturday, October 3rd. Doors open at 7, and we’ll be going strong until 10. Suggested donation is $15. Hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks are included. You may buy tickets online at http://www.dancems.org/, or you can reserve your spot by email or phone at brooke@dancems.org or 206-659-9391. Tickets will also be available at the door.

From host Sara Beth Dye:

As many of you already know, I am raising money for Nepal’s Children Emergency Relief via UNICEF Australia. Nepal’s children face an unprecedented emotional toll as they deal with the devastating consequences of two earthquakes in the space of weeks. UNICEF has been on the ground since late April, but they still very much need our support. These funds will specifically go to shelter for children whose homes have been destroyed, clean water for drinking and washing to prevent further spread of waterborne disease such as cholera, healthcare including vaccinations and vitamins, hygiene kits and facilities, educational materials to use while schools are being rebuilt, and psychosocial support for children who have experienced profound stress like the loss of a parent.

Come join me for an evening of fun at The Lounge, a rustic and modern private event venue by Duos Catering. Enjoy cocktails, appetizers, free wine tastings from local wineries, raffle drawings, silent auction items and fabulous live music entertainment provided by the Robert Stewart Fiasco Band! (If you have never heard these guys play, you are missing out!) Tickets are $25.00, purchased at the door, and includes wine tastings, delicious appetizers, two raffle tickets, and that warm fuzzy feeling knowing you are helping a wonderful cause. Remember… it easily could have happened here.

Come and go as you please and feel free to invite whomever you would like! See you there. ;)

HPIC’s Design Charrette @ Highland Park Improvement Club
Oct 25 @ 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm

You are invited to HPIC’s first ever Design Charrette, Sunday, October 25th.

What’s a Design Charrette?
A charrette is an intensive planning session where citizens, designers and others collaborate on a vision for development. It provides a forum for ideas and offers the unique advantage of giving immediate feedback to the designers. More importantly, it allows everyone who participates to be a mutual author of the plan.

Why should I get involved?
The HPIC Board and many of us in the neighborhood have expressed different ideas over the years about what we would like to do with the building, to make it more appealing to look at and use. Here’s your chance to make your opinion known!

How does it work?
We have two architects from NBBJ who are generously facilitating the event to help us envision what we want this place to do and be for years to come. We need you to come and bring your thinking cap, good humor and ideas. This is a time to dream, a time to explore, a time to roll up your sleeves and dive in to draw pictures, shout our your ideas, and vote on your favorites.

When does it start?
Doors open at noon and the two hour working session starts at 1 pm. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Please RSVP to hpic1919@gmail.com.

Fundraiser performance of ‘My Mañana Comes’ @ ArtsWest Playhouse & Gallery
Nov 11 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

On October 25th, around 6:30 pm, Ramon Aspeitia was stabbed on his way home from work at his bus transfer in White Center. A hard-working and well-loved employee of both Shadowland and Ma’Ono, two restaurants in the Alaska Junction area of West Seattle, Ramon was brutally attacked by three assailants and is currently paralyzed from the waist down.

ArtsWest is seeking to do its part to contribute to the recovery of their West Seattle neighbor. All ticket proceeds from the Wednesday, November 11th, 7:30 pm performance of their current production “My Mañana Comes” will go to Ramon Aspeitia’s family to help with medical expenses.

My Mañana Comes, a new play that debuted to much acclaim off-Broadway last year, delves into the issues of immigration, identity, and fair pay. Four bussers, two Mexican immigrants living in the Corona neighborhood of Queens, a black American from West Harlem, and a Mexican American who grew up in Coney Island, find their worlds intersecting in the back of a Manhattan restaurant.

My Mañana Comes runs through November 22nd, 2015 at ArtsWest Playhouse and Gallery (4711 California Ave SW, Seattle WA 98116). Tickets (ranging from $17 – $37.50) are on sale now and may be purchased online at www.artswest.org or by phone at 206-938-0339, or at the box office Thursday – Saturday 1:30–7:30 pm and Sunday 10:30 am–3:00 pm.

BackPACKS bring HOPE event @ (See listing)
Nov 28 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

“Bring a new or gently used backpack and stuff it with first aid, food, toiletry products, and a handwritten letter by you. Then Stephanie’s Lifeline will hand them out along with a winter jacket to help keep some people warm this winter and also give a little HOPE and encouragement to our friends on the streets.

We ask that everyone bring at least one backpack… the more the better. We are hoping to fill 200 with a first aid kit, toiletries, a few food items and a drink. We will also take the time to hand write 200 notes of encouragement to put in each bag in order to just give a little HOPE and bring a smile to the face of a person who likely doesn’t smile much these days. Each backpack will be accompanied by a coat and given out to homeless individuals currently in need.

Please feel welcome to bring any items you would like including any first aid, food, drink, and/or toiletry items, backpack and/or winter coat.

We will be providing light snacks and refreshments and it will give us all time to chat and network. Please RSVP if you are interested in joining the party! Or if you are unable to join the group but would like to donate, visit our gofundme
page https://www.gofundme.com/BackPACKSBringHOPE and make a donation toward the purchase of the items or drop some items off before the date of the party.

Acoustic Music Benefit for Frances & John Smersh @ Karass Creative
Dec 6 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Community + Love: A musical benefit to support the Smershes

Recently, at age 48, beloved artist and West Seattle shop owner Frances Smersh was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease. There is no treatment. There is no cure. And medical insurance does not cover what will be required. Alzheimer’s is a brutal, merciless disease. Plaques and tangles destroy brain cells and decimate not only a person’s memory but the essence of who they are–their personality and their ability to execute even the most basic of functions. While the length of survival is uncertain, Younger Onset Dementia progresses rapidly, and in September their doctor told them to consider the next twelve months the best ones they will have in this journey.

To help raise money to give Frances and John time to be together and to help pay for current and looming medical expenses, several long-time musician friends have banded together to present a unique and exceptional night of music. The musicians, having played and performed in many of Seattle’s most notable acoustic bands, are pooling their well-honed talents together for a one-night performance.

Dec 06, 2015 6:00 pm
at Karass Creative
Tickets online here

With a strong core of musicians, the night will feature evolving small groups, and different pairings as these friends join in and also step aside as the acoustic musical journey unfolds. Drawing from a range of folk, swing, americana, blues, old-time and bluegrass, it promises to be an engaging and satisfying night of music, and a celebration of community and love.

Heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the following friends who are donating their
time, energy, and extraordinary talents to the show:

Grant Dermody: Harmonica, Vocals
Forrest Gibson: Guitar, Mandolin, Vocals
Michael Gray: Violin, Vocals
Orville Johnson: Dobro, Guitar, Banjo, Vocals
Greg Maass: Dobro, Banjo, Vocals
Mary Maass: Fiddle, Vocals
Joe Wilmhoff: Bass, Vocals

Special Fundraiser Tasting event @ Bin 41
Dec 9 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

New, special fundraiser tasting at Bin 41:

As we worked through the final details for the NW Hope & Healing tasting, we were touched close to home by the dreaded ‘C’ in our own lives. A coworker of Jon’s is undergoing a valiant battle with a rare form of cancer. To assist with medical expenses including travel costs, we are hosting a special fundraiser next month, on Wednesday December 9th from 6-7:30 pm. Our dear friends at Avennia have graciously signed up to showcase their new fall releases for this special evening.

Cara was diagnosed with stage IV Ocular Melanoma, an extremely rare eye cancer that has spread to her liver, in July of this year. She participated in an immunotherapy clinical trial starting that month but found out in October that it was unsuccessful and the cancer has grown and spread to her lungs. Now Cara and her husband Tobias are reaching out to the few oncologists in the country that understand and can treat this form of cancer which will likely require extensive travel for treatment.

We are hosting this fundraiser event to help with a portion of their travel expenses and to provide support when Cara and Tobias truly need it the most. Join us as we toast Cara and all that she means to us, her friends and family.

In addition to this fundraiser, Cara and Tobias have created a gofundme page. As the holidays approach, this is the time for sharing and giving assistance to those in need. Every little bit helps, even simply words of encouragement. We hope you will help FILL THE BIN on a Wednesday night to show your support for a wonderful, caring person in need. We will have a $10 tasting fee that is refundable as usual on a bottle purchase, but you can also choose to donate your fee to Cara and Tobias. The bin will be donating a portion of all sales during the tasting. If you cannot attend or wish to assist in addition to the tasting, please

At West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor):

Wednesday Feb 10th Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training Information meeting 7 pm: We are thinking ahead to our race, the Float Dodger 5k. As many of you know, our chosen charity is the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Lori has coached for the team in training program over the years, getting athletes ready to tackle an endurance race (half or full marathon). Most importantly is that it is all about raising funds to further research for treatments for blood cancers. The medications and treatments that this program has created have far-reaching and life-saving influence. The true heroes are the participants that sign up to further the mission. We need you to change the world. And it happens every training season!

With all this in mind, we are so excited and pleased to announce an informational meeting. Come and hear about the program from the wonderful staff at LLS. We will have the meeting after completing the group run on Wednesday night (you do not have to do the run to attend the meeting). We will have some refreshments and fun. One thing I must mention is that fun and lifelong friendships come from this program!!!!

Panama Hotel Jazz: Steve Griggs Ensemble concert – benefit for WS Helpline @ Alki United Church of Christ
Mar 11 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

“Music with a Heart” concert series, sponsored by Alki UCC, presents:

Panama Hotel Jazz” Steve Griggs Ensemble. “Music made from memories”

The show is “music made from memories,” a combination of stories about the Japanese internment during WWII and original jazz compositions by Steve Griggs, performed by a group of very talented musicians–the same musicians who provided the Christmas concert here in December.

Friday, March 11, 7:30 pm
Alki United Church of Christ

A free-will offering of $15 – $20 is suggested; cash and checks (made out to WS Helpine) accepted at the door. Refreshments and treats after the program. All the proceeds from the concert series are used to pay the musicians and to donate to West Seattle Helpline. (The church promotes the series but does not share in the proceeds. Our goal is to reach out to our community and provide something of benefit to our community.)

Special note: One of our very long time members is Ruth Okada, age 97, who was a young woman with two very young children when she and her husband were interned in Idaho. She is currently writing some thoughts to be shared at that concert about that experience and how it has shaped her life. She and her husband, unlike many others, were welcomed back into the West Seattle and Alki UCC community when the war ended, and they were part of a group which was very instrumental in designing and funding and building the sanctuary in the late 50’s where these concerts are held. She also happens to be the member of the church who spoke out in favor of using undesignated memorial funds from a member who died several years ago to acquire a world class concert grand piano to grace our sanctuary.

TEAM MILA FUND
In October 2015, 8-year-old MILA SORLIE underwent surgery to remove an egg-sized brain tumor. Although surgery was successful, the tumor was found to be cancerous … an extremely rare (200 cases per year) and highly aggressive brain cancer that generally strikes children around Mila’s age. She finished 6 weeks radiation (whole brain and targeted) in December, 2015. In January, 2016, she started her first chemotherapy and has 5 more remaining chemo treatments to go before completing treatment in June, 2016. It’s been a rough journey but Mila is a girl with an abundance of strength, grace, and love. Not only that, she is well-equipped with an essential X-FACTOR: her amazing family, friends, and community. Unfortunately, her many and often unpredictable treatments have meant additional expenses and missed work for her parents, Teresa and Matthew, who are doing their best to juggle multiple demands. Let’s help Mila’s family so that Matthew and Teresa can fully be with Mila through this long, grueling journey.
