1,500 Free Thanksgiving Turkeys and Bags of Groceries for Families in Need

Eastridge Church will provide 1,500 free Thanksgiving turkeys and bags of groceries to families in need on Saturday, November 21, beginning at 9 a.m. (while supplies last) at their two locations: Issaquah and Seattle. The church will also be giving away new gloves for adults and children.

The giveaway will take a different look this year, in light of Covid-19 restrictions, and will be drive-thru only. The church asks that everyone stay in their cars and wear a mask when receiving their Thanksgiving meal. Also, please refrain from arriving too early to avoid traffic back-up on public streets.

For 17 years, Eastridge Church has put on the giveaway and offered a free turkey and bag of groceries to families in the community who may need a little help to put a holiday meal on their table. Eastridge Church’s goal through the event is to demonstrate to its neighbors that Eastridge cares by providing a meal this Thanksgiving.

When: Saturday, November 21, starting at 9 a.m., while supplies last

The West Seattle Campus of Eastridge Church
4500 39th Avenue SW, Seattle

The 1,500 dinner packages will be given out first-come, first-served, with no demonstration of need required to receive the assistance. One per household, drive-thru only. Please wear a mask and remain in your car. Please refrain from arriving too early to avoid traffic back-up on public streets.

Geology & Paleoecology of Puget Sound @ Online
Nov 22 @ 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Title: Geology & Paleoecology of Puget Sound

Date & time: November 22, 2020 10:30 am – 12:30 pm

Event description: In this workshop, attendees will explore the geological history of Puget Sound Basin and look at how the most recent period of glaciation shaped the environment we live in today. In addition, attendees will be introduced to the world of paleoecology. Paleoecology is the study of fossil animals and plants in order to deduce the environmental conditions in which they lived.

This event will feature Taryn Black of University of Washington’s Earth and Space Sciences. Taryn is a glaciologist and science educator based in Seattle. She hails from the foothills of the Cascades, and grew up fascinated with landscapes, the environment, and Earth’s polar regions. Her curiosity led her to take a college geology course, sparking a lifelong passion for earth science and outdoor recreation. Taryn is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in glaciology, using satellite images to study how glaciers in Greenland are responding to climate change. When not looking at glaciers on a computer, Taryn enjoys looking at glaciers from trails in the Cascades, as well as cycling and kayaking around the Seattle area.

This event will be live on zoom and required pre-registration.

We are accepting, and would truly appreciate, donations:

Puget Ridge Edible Park New Year’s Eve Vigil
Dec 31 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

With our sights set on new hope in a new year many of us feel the need to reflect on the struggles and losses of the past year and the 1.7 million souls we have lost. We also may want to say a swift goodbye to 2020 as well.

Therefore, the volunteers at Puget Ridge Edible Park thought it would be a good idea to invite our friends and neighbors to a Covid Candlelight Vigil and Say Goodbye to 2020 New Year’s Eve at the community garden. We have a luminaria candle lit pathway to bring up to 5 people at a time to our New Year’s Eve fire to toss out the old year by throwing into the fire a written message or any symbol of bad memories over the last year.

The vigil will take place Thursday, New Year’s from 6pm to 8pm at 5265 18th Ave. SW. Be prepared to wait your turn to enter the park as we are limited to 5 people at a time. Wear warm clothes and bring some warm drinks. Parking will be available along 18th Ave. SW and SW Brandon St. Heavy rain will cancel.

The volunteers at Puget Ridge Edible Park would like to offer you a healthy and happy New Year!

Bike Works Trivia Night @ Online
Jan 21 @ 5:30 pm

Columbia City-based cycling nonprofit Bike Works has announced that they will host an online trivia event on January 21 st at 5:30 PM featuring an impressive panel of cycling champions: Heidi Franz, Andy Hampsten, Jennie Reed, and Nelson ‘The Cheetah’ Vails!

Franz is a professional racing cyclist, currently riding for the UCI Continental Team Rally Cycling. She resides in West Seattle.

Hampsten, professional road bicycle racer and winner of the 1988 Giro d'Italia, was inducted into the US Bicycling Hall of Fame in 2017.

Reed is a World and US champion track cyclist. She has competed in 13 World Championships, and won a silver medal in the 2012 Olympics in the Team Pursuit. She is a King County resident, hailing from Redmond.

Finally, Vails is a retired road and track cyclist, who won a silver medal in the 1984 Olympics. He is the first African American cyclist to win an Olympic medal and was inducted into the US Bicycling Hall of Fame in 2009. Vails portrayed a New York bicycle messenger in the 1986 film Quicksilver, a role informed by his real work as a messenger, when he was known as “The Cheetah.”

Trivia guests will compete for a chance to win prize packages from Wahoo,  Metier Brewing ,  Miir , and Bike Works.

This event will support Bike Works’ youth, community, and environmental programs. Bike Works promotes the bicycle as a vehicle for change to empower youth and build resilient communities. This year, they are celebrating 25 years of making cycling accessible to the Seattle community.

Tickets are available on a sliding scale at: bikeworks.org/event/bicycle-trivia-night

Broadway has been dark for over a year… But the lights are bright at Alki Elementary! Alki PTA is thrilled to announce the 10th anniversary of their musical theater enrichment program with this year’s musical, Super Happy Awesome News! Thursday, April 22nd (Super Cast!) and Friday, April 23rd (Awesome Cast!) at 6:30 PM.

We’d like to extend the invitation to our surrounding West Seattle schools and community to get on the guest list at Alkimusical.square.site for a fun family night joining our Zoom viewing parties to watch our pre-recorded shows! You won’t want to miss 29 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Alki performers bringing you this totally new musical from Beat by Beat Press, written during quarantine about kids in quarantine! In this crazy year, we all need a little Super Happy Awesome News!

In Alki PTA Musical tradition, we will be having a Flower & Bake Sale – ONLINE NOW through Sunday, April 18th at midnight – where all proceeds benefit Alki PTA and our community partners: Admiral Theatre, Jones Soda, Cupcake Royale, Alm Hill Gardens, Treat Cookies, Franz Bakery and more! Pre-order beautiful spring flower bouquets for your home, popcorn buckets for your viewing parties, tasty treats, and cupcakes to celebrate the night! And don’t forget your PBJGBCSWC Sandwich Kit! Your $5 suggested donation and/or purchase from the Super Happy Awesome Flower + Bake Sale at Alkimusical.square.site will ensure you are on the Guest List to receive both of the Premiere Viewing Party Zoom links in your inbox the week of the show!
