White Center Crab Feed fundraiser for Evergreen High School @ White Center Fraternal Order of the Eagles
Mar 4 @ 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Are you a White Center resident? Are you an Evergreen High School alum or supporter? Here is a chance to make a tangible difference for students at Evergreen High School–for the price of a fresh crab dinner.

White Center community leaders are recharging the Evergreen Wolverine Booster Club. This is a crab feed by the community, for the community, to eat delicious food together, listen to live music by Island Soul, and–don’t miss this part–raise money to benefit the students of Evergreen High School.

White Center Crab Feed
Saturday, March 4, from 5–9 pm
White Center Fraternal Order of the Eagles

Music by Island Soul.

Tickets: $25 in advance, $30 at the door.
Contact Pat Thompson at (206) 349-8106 or email pvthompson206@hotmail.com

The three small schools on the Evergreen campus are unifying as Evergreen High School starting next fall. The Evergreen Wolverine Booster Club is a partnership of parents, teachers, coaches, and alumni coming together to support students. The club has been dormant for a number of years. “The Evergreen community and school staff are making a valiant attempt to revive a once active and proud booster club,” said Terri McMahan, director of athletics for Highline Public Schools.

Two of the organizers behind the effort to rebuild the booster club are longtime White Center residents Pat Thompson and Tyrone Curry.

“We are rallying this community to come together to support the students who attend Evergreen,” said Curry. “Let’s establish a consistent network of supporters, volunteers, and fundraisers to lift our own boat and pull together for the good of these young people and this neighborhood.”

It’s simple really. It starts with a crab feed. It isn’t cheap, but then fresh crab isn’t cheap either. “And what price do you put on helping to even the playing field–maybe literally–for the young people of our community?” asks Thompson. “We are White Center. We have strength and community power and alumni that have barely been tapped.” Make plans for a fun, local evening out with live music, succulent crab, and the vibrant White Center community that describes itself as “not so white and not so centered!” A longtime schools supporter, the White Center Eagles are donating the venue and have secured a donation of crab from Alaska.

Evergreen High School is reuniting as a community hub with increased opportunities, a personalized experience, dual language, strong extra-curricular programs, and a world-class education. It’s a perfect time to send a powerful message to the students and staff of this local high school: “We ALL belong, and we believe in you!”

4th Annual Environmental Issues Slam @ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
Apr 20 @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

The 2017 Environmental Issues Slam event is sponsored by the Washington Foundation for the Environment (WFFE).

The Slam is a great opportunity for middle and high school students to channel their passion and concern for a local environmental issue into a short, creative, multimedia presentation that will inspire others to take action.

Student teams or individuals present their environmental issue in front of a live audience in the spirit of a “slam” style performance which is characterized by a short (5 minutes) informative and entertaining presentation. The Slam is intended to educate both the community audience and the students themselves as they research and develop their presentation.

Participants:
Students in grades 6-12
Educators or youth leaders who work with middle or high school students and will bring a team to the Slam.

Participants compete for two prizes: a People’s Choice Award determined by audience vote and a Judge’s Choice Award determined by a panel of experts in environmental fields.

“I have participated in the Environmental Slam for the last three years, and each time has taught me something valuable and useful that I doubt I could have learned elsewhere. Through the many issues that I researched, compiled information on, and presented to the audience I began to develop a passion for social change, leadership and participation. At my last Slam, my projects (Students for Sustainable Slopes) even won, and I continue to work on it to this day. The Slam provided me with a launching board to promote development in my community and as a consequence has made me feel like I have begun to successfully contribute to society and my future.”

Seattle’s Urban Bird Treaty Signing and Birdwalk @ Lincoln Park North Playground
May 5 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm

On Friday, May 5, Seattle will become an Urban Bird Treaty city.

Two events are scheduled:
Birdwalk: 10 – 10:40 am
Signing Ceremony: 11:00 am – Noon

Lincoln Park at the North Playground
8011 Fauntleroy Way SW
For more info, call (206) 523-4483

Please join us for the signing of Seattle’s Urban Bird Treaty!

After extensive outreach and advocacy by Seattle Audubon and partners, Seattle’s city council passed a resolution to enter into an Urban Bird Treaty with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. The Treaty partnership will protect birds in the Seattle area by developing programs to reduce hazards to migrating birds that travel along the Pacific Flyway, restoring habitat, and connecting residents and youth to nature within our city.

On May 5, the city and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will officially sign the treaty, an important milestone that recognizes Seattle’s role in protecting the Pacific Flyway. Seattle Audubon volunteers will lead a free birdwalk, one hour prior to the ceremony.

This work is a collaboration between Seattle Audubon, Audubon Washington, Heron Habitat Helpers, City of Seattle, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife.

Gatewood Elementary playground design presentation @ Gatewood Elementary Cafeteria
May 8 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Help us kick off Gatewood Elementary’s playground improvements!

The final draft design for the SW corner of our playground—based on student and community priorities—will be presented this coming Monday, May 8, 6-6:30pm in the school cafeteria just before the general PTA meeting. Karen Kiest, landscape architect, and Gatewood’s playground steering committee will present the design, explain next steps in fundraising and implementation, and take questions and final feedback from our community.*

And, we need your help to make playground improvements a reality!

To apply for a $100,000 implementation grant from the Neighborhood Matching Fund in June, we need to come up with $50,000 worth of community match in the form of volunteer hours, cash, and in-kind donations. Can you, family, and friends pledge volunteer time for work parties?  All ages welcome!  Can you offer a cash donation?  Are you a contractor who could help with heavy equipment or irrigation work?  Do you own a plant nursery or related business that could donate trees, soil, mulch, sod, or other needed materials for improvements?  How about food and drinks for work parties?  It all counts toward our match, so come and lend your support for playground improvements. If you can pledge to help but can’t make the meeting on Monday, please email Sandy Lennon at sandylennon@comcast.net.

On that note, save the date!  Second Gear Sports, (WSB sponsor)our West Seattle sports consignment store, is donating 10% of sales on Sunday, May 21, to playground improvements. Gear up for your summer sports on May 21 and help us on our way to a better playground.

*Playground design work has been generously funded by a Small Sparks grant from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods’ Neighborhood Matching Fund and the Gatewood PTA.

At 6:20 pm, WSHS Principal Ruth Medsker will address students and SSC’s Julius Moss, 13th Year Promise Scholarship assistant director, will share information on the college scholarship and how WSHS tech students can prepare to take part in the program.

West Seattle High School (WSHS) will hold their “Career Connections: A Student Showcase” event on Thursday, May 25, where students in the Career Tech Education Department will showcase their creations in professional and technical fields, ranging from IT to culinary arts and automotive technology. South’s 13th Year Promise Scholarship, which provides one year of tuition-free college and college success support services to graduating seniors from area high schools, is expanding to include WSHS starting with their Class of 2018. South offers numerous professional and technical career training programs (in addition to academic transfer programs) that match up well with WSHS’s Career Tech Education Department.

“WSHS has an extensive Career Tech Education Department that approaches teaching and learning from hands-on, project-based instruction,” said Helen Maynard, Career Center Specialist at WSHS. “We are unique in the (Seattle Public Schools) District because we offer a variety of opportunities for students to identify and launch careers in the professional and technical fields such as CAD design, woodworking, culinary, IT, auto mechanics, photography, music, health and human services, and business.”

With the 13th Year Promise Scholarship becoming available to WSHS graduates in 2018 and beyond, students interested in professional and technical fields will have the opportunity to continue their training at South with their first year of tuition covered by the scholarship.

Neighborhood Preschool’s 10th anniversary
Jun 10 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

ON Saturday, June 10, Neighborhood Preschool will be celebrating 10 years of nurturing and educating 3-5 year olds in West Seattle. In 2007, after years of working in many other child education capacities, Stephanie Thiele realized her dream of creating a small, intimate space that fostered creative learning. Her goal since then has been to help both children and parents gently transition from the early years at home to the larger world of elementary school, while at the same time cultivating curiosity and imagination.

Trained in early childhood and elementary education, Stephanie also sits on the board of Directors for the West Seattle Preschool Association and is involved throughout the community. Known for her creative, engaging, and nurturing approach, she’s seen whole sibling groups come through her doors over the years. She remains committed to offering a smaller more personal option for preschoolers, with no more than an 8 to 1 teacher-student ratio.

All those who love and appreciate Miss Stephanie and the work she does with West Seattle kids, are invited to drop by the Neighborhood Preschool June 10th between 1-4 pm.
The address is: 6902 35th Ave SW, Seattle
or if you have further questions feel free to call: 206-852-1542.

Lincoln Park Nature Walk: Edible and Medicinal Plants @ Lincoln Park @ South Parking Lot
Jun 11 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Edible and Medicinal Plants of Lincoln Park
Sunday, June 11th, 3-5pm
Space is limited to 15.
From Jonathan Hover:

Edible and Medicinal Plants of Lincoln Park
Sunday, June 11th, 3-5pm
**We’ll meet at the parking lot at the south end of the park at 3pm**

Lincoln Park offers a fun variety of forest, shoreline, and metropolitan plants friends. Plants we’ll see include Huckleberries, Thimbleberries, False Solomon’s Seal, St. John’s Wort, Oregon Grape, Indian Plum, and many more!

We’ll talk about how to identify, ethically gather, prepare, and use the medicinal plants we’ll encounter. I provide handouts with the common and scientific names, preparations, and uses of the most of the plants we’ll see, as well as a glossary of herbal terms I’ll be using, and botanical illustrations describing leaf shapes and types, and flower parts and types for context.

Make sure to bring something to write with, comfortable shoes, and water!

I grew up in southeast Seattle, and have always had a passion for the natural world. I attended the Intro to Western Herbalism program at the Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies in Boulder, Co. from 1999-2000, and received a certificate in Advanced Herbalism from the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism in Boulder, Co. in 2003. I’ve studied the uses of northwest native plants for the last 15 years, and have led plant walks professionally on Orcas Island, Seattle, and the Cascades. I have found that being able to identify and know the uses of the plants around me has changed the way I view the world, giving me a deeper sense of connection with this beautiful place we live, and I love to share that with others.

I want my walks to be accessible and affordable to all who are interested. $15 sliding scale, open to trades, nobody refused for lack of money, children 13 and under free. The event will be limited to 15 people. You can reserve a spot through my paypal. Pay any amount and comment on how many spots you’d like, or email me at evergreenplantwalks@gmail to request a spot or with any questions.

Shrek the Musical @ West Seattle High School
Aug 11 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Twelfth Night Productions (TNP) is proud to present SHREK THE MUSICAL.
“Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek….” and thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Throw in a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand… and his name is Shrek.
“SHREK THE MUSICAL is sweet and busy, nice and big, and, every so often, extremely lovable,” writes Newsday.

Aug 12 @ 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Let the magic of giving turn unneeded items into needed school supplies.

For the 22nd year, “Pencil Me In For Kids” is helping provide essential school supplies to West Seattle elementary students-in-need. This year we are raising funds in cooperation with Value Village.

The “Pencil Me In For Kids FUNDrive” is Saturday, August 12 from noon – 8 pm at the West Seattle YMCA in conjunction with the West Seattle Outdoor Movie, “Finding Dory”.

By donating gently-used clothing, shoes, accessories, book, linens, and small household items (no furniture), you can help provide the 13 West Seattle elementary schools with basic supplies such as black & white composition books, pencils, colored pencils, glue sticks, dry erase markers, pink erasers, washable markers, and pocket-file folders.

We get paid for every pound of goods donated and we use the funds to buy each school’s requested items.

Start collecting now. If you can’t get to the YMCA that day, we can arrange to pick-up prior to the 12th. For more information: Email Ann Avery at pencil.me.in.for.kids.2017@gmail.com

This production will be performed at West Seattle High School Theater, August 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7:30 and August 13, 19 and 20 at 3:00. Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets, and at West Seattle High School Theater, 3000 California Ave SW, an hour before the show on performance days. Prices are $23 for adults and $20 for students & seniors. http://www.twelfthnightproductions.org/

School Bake Sale for Hurricane Relief @ West Seattle Montessori School & Academy
Oct 16 @ 8:00 am – 9:00 am

Our middle school students are organizing a plan to help contribute to some of the rebuilding in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. They researched and found a Montessori school similar to ours in San Juan called La Casa Montessori. This school has 130 students and operates a preprimary through elementary age Montessori program. Their school building has been hit with major structural damage, and a loss of a portion of their roof. Our Spanish teacher Suely called the director of the school and was able to reach her on the first day she had phone service after the hurricane. She said several of her students’ families have lost everything, and that the destruction was everywhere. She was very grateful and encouraged by our call from one Montessori school to another in this extremely challenging time.

Throughout October we will be holding bake sales every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 am-9 am near the school arrival drop off area (11215 15th Ave SW) (NO Sales on October 13 or October 27 as middle school is not in session). Breakfast goodies will be available for purchase for $3 (or more if you’d like to donate more!). All proceeds will go directly to La Casa Montessori via their GoFundMe campaign.

Here is a link to their Facebook page as well.

There are Montessori schools worldwide, and this opportunity to connect with our own Global Montessori Community is a powerful reminder that all we need to do is extend ourselves just a little bit to make a life changing difference. Our students are truly leading mindfully and thinking globally with this fundraiser, and we thank you for your help in advance!

Longfellow Creek celebration
Nov 5 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

From Seattle Parks:

Many community members, from organizations to individuals, work hard to keep Longfellow Creek healthy and accessible. Twenty-five years ago, two community plans laid out a vision for improved access to Longfellow creek. The Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail was developed by neighbors in partnership with government, businesses, non-profits, and schools. Formal tours and stewardship opportunities—like planting trees and monitoring water quality and salmon—provide hands-on connections to the Creek. Many schools in the area participate in arts, environmental education, and other programs along the Creek.

Longfellow Creek is a natural link among communities throughout Delridge, High Point, and Westwood neighborhoods. While many consider it a natural wonder, the Creek’s benefit to people, plants, and animals can be hidden from view. To bring light to Longfellow Creek’s contributions, the City of Seattle and community partners are hosting a celebration of the creek and we want you to join!

Celebrate 25+ years at the Creek

Bring your neighbors, friends, and family to celebrate over 25 years of community engagement with Longfellow Creek on November 5, 2017. The fun will kick off at the corner of 28th Ave SW and SW Dakota St* and run from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. All ages are encouraged to come participate in activities like exploring the Dragonfly Pavilion and Salmon Bone Bridge, caring for garden beds, creating a postcard inspired by Longfellow Creek, looking inside a salmon, and enjoying guided nature walks.

Please RSVP at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LongfellowCreek
Questions? Email Sheryl.Shapiro@Seattle.gov or call (206) 615-1443.
*In case of heavy rain, the celebration will be relocated to the Delridge Community Center (4501 Delridge Way SW, Seattle, WA 98106).

Dragonfly Pavilion and Salmon Bone Bridge

Let your imagination soar when you see the giant salmon bones and 16-foot-tall dragonfly—two copper sculptures on the Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail.

Postcards from the Creek

Meet your creek is an art project by Vaughn Bell, an artist who lives in the creek watershed. Create unique, hand-made postcards based on your observations and understanding of Longfellow Creek. You will get the chance to mail the postcard to a friend or loved one, or to donate it to the postcard archive which may be displayed in the community. Images of the postcards will be shared online at the Meet Your Creek blog.

Salmon: Look inside

You may know how a fish swims, but do you know how it eats, breathes, and reproduces? You’ll discover the swimming, eating, breathing, and reproducing systems—and you can touch them (if you want to)!

Nature Walk

Local naturalists will guide you through the park and open spaces on a flat, wide trail. See and learn about the creek, salmon, and the wide variety of plants and their historical uses.

Student Assignment Plan/High-School Boundary open-house meeting @ West Seattle High School
Nov 9 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

From Seattle Public Schools:

Five open house meetings are scheduled for families, students and staff about changes to the Student Assignment Plan (SAP) and high school boundaries.

District office staff will be available to discuss the 2018-19 SAP, including related updates to special education, school choice, and advanced learning opportunities in high schools. Visitors will also be able to review the proposed high school boundary scenarios.

At the end of the month, families and staff will receive an email invitation and survey to provide feedback on the three proposed high school boundary options. New high school boundaries will be implemented in 2019-20.

The top three potential scenarios can be found on the High School Boundary Task Force Recommendations webpage.

For more background information including a timeline for decisions, visit our High School Boundary Changes webpage.

See the full announcement here. The district says the WSHS meeting will offer interpretation in Spanish, Somali, Chinese, and Vietnamese.

The saga of a wise (Jedi) knight and an evil (Sith) lord, of a beautiful princess held captive and a young hero coming of age, Star Wars abounds with all the valor and villainy of Shakespeare’s greatest plays. ’Tis a tale told by fretful droids, full of faithful Wookiees and fearsome Stormtroopers, signifying…pretty much everything.

Nighttime low-tide beach walks @ Constellation Park, Alki
Jan 28 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join trained volunteer Beach Naturalists at South Alki/Constellation Park on the following dates this year for a free guided exploration at very low tide.

Explore the beach during winter nighttime low tides with Beach Naturalist staff and volunteers. Discover what creatures we see on the beach at this time of year. Dress for the weather (bundle up!) and for tide pooling: boots, hats, gloves and a good flashlight are musts.

Sunday, January 28, 7 pm–9pm

Beach etiquette:
While on the beach, please remember:
~ Walk carefully; there’s life beneath your feet!
~ Touch gently with one wet finger.
~ Observe animals where they are and please avoid picking them up.
~ Please only move rocks that are small enough to be moved with one hand and return them to the position in which you found them.
~ Please only remove trash from the beach, nothing else. Many of our beaches are protected by law.

Children enjoy a rich, play-based curriculum that not only prepares them for kindergarten, but also instills in them a lifelong love of learning. Whether finger painting, building with blocks, running on the playground or on a field trip to the neighborhood grocery, every experience is seen as a learning opportunity.

Susan Goodwin pop-up at CAPERS
Mar 17 @ 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Susan Goodwin jewelry popup, Sat., March 17, 12–6 p.m. at CAPERS Home Seattle.

Meet this beloved Northwest jewelry artist in person, known for her one-of-a-kind pieces and passion for pearls.

“Susan definitely has a following,” said CAPERS owner Lisa Myers. “It’s really a treat to have her at a trunk show like this, as it’s rare that she does any in-persons.”

Born in Kirkland, Goodwin traveled the world before returning to her native Seattle area and settling here until 2010. Her journey took her to multiple states and many diverse careers — working on a horse ranch in Utah and making granola in Minneapolis among them — before becoming a tour de force in the world of pearl jewelry and precious stone showpieces.

It all began in the 1980s when a friend sparked her artistic spirit with some ancient glass trade beads. “I loved the history behind them but found their form a bit rugged,” said the artist.

According to Goodwin, the ‘80s were a time when styles were outrageous and she spent hours in her basement, blow torch in hand, trying to perfect crafting her own glass beads. As her skills grew, so did her own tastes, eventually leading her to swap glass beads for the inner fire and magical energy of precious stones.

Then in the 1990s, her business skyrocketed and she expanded her line, becoming widespread in high-end department stores, museum gift shops and boutiques in America, Asia, and Europe.

But success didn’t keep her from staying up on changing jewelry styles. Rather, she developed a look that is perhaps best defined as a blend of timeless classics with a nod to current fashion trends. Drawing inspiration from the glamour of the 1950s, she uses influences from the natural world such as pearls.

“There isn’t a woman alive who doesn’t shine brighter while wearing a strand of pearls,” said Goodwin. “Pearls frame a face like nothing else.” She noted pearls are often utilized as reward for life’s passages—which seems especially poetic when you consider pearls symbolize an irritant becoming something prized and beautiful. Each has its own character, shape, color and luster. “Once you’ve bonded with a pearl, there’s precious little that can take its place,” said the current Willamette Valley, Ore., resident.

Today, Goodwin pursues what she loves most, producing custom works or one-of- a-kind showpieces for her loyal clientele. Additionally, she designs a limited line of boutique and museum pieces and enjoys the fresh food and local wines found in the Willamette Valley.

While supplies last, students biking to school on May 9 will receive a fun prize! We’ll also have some snacks to keep us fueled for the ride!

You can bike to Greg Davis Park or drive and park. Everyone is welcome!

Grade K-4 students – please have a parent or other adult join in the bike train with your child.

Grade 5-8 students – parents are welcome but not required. (Please consider student’s biking ability
and maturity level.)

Please note the bike train is only in the morning. Families should make their own plans for afternoon transportation.

If there is more than a light drizzle on Wednesday, May 9, the RAIN DATE is FRIDAY, MAY 11.
