West Seattle Democratic Women: ‘Chasing Ice’ @ WS Golf Course
Jul 27 @ 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Greetings Members, Supporters, and Friends of the West Seattle Democratic Women!

Summer is in full swing, and our next meeting will be an evening event, so if our daytime meetings conflict with your work schedules (or even if you come to the daytime meetings), we cordially invite you to make WSDW part of your summer by attending this meeting/social gathering! Since the specialty action work that our organization is currently focused on is Climate Change and Global Warming, this program will consist of the screening of CHASING ICE. This screening aligns with the work that our AEC (Awareness, Education, Climate Action) Committee has been immersed in for the past year-and-a-half; CHASING ICE is a beautifully shot, multiple-award-winning (including from Seattle Int’l Film Festival), critically and popularly acclaimed film that documents how global warming is impacting the planet. Here is the official trailer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIZTMVNBjc

We meet at the West Seattle Golf Course on Thursday, July 27th.

There will not be a Pre-Meeting Discussion led by Theresa McCormick on this evening.

There will not be a Postcard-Writing Campaign on this evening.

Registration begins at 6:00 pm with dinner service beginning at 6:15pm.

CHASING ICE screens at 6:30 pm and runs 75 minutes.

There will be a short discussion after the film, with input from our AEC Committee members as well as from some of our legislators and representatives who would be able to offer some perspective on specific actions we can take to combat the effects of global warming.

Meeting will adjourn no later than 8:30 pm.

Dinner is $15 for WSDW members and $20 for non-members; if you do not want to order dinner, the room charge (which includes dessert and coffee/tea only) is $7.50

If you are involved with an organization, social network, church, or other group with a membership, please spread the word far and wide about this event by forwarding this invitation to any and all of your networks! We are expecting a good turnout and, additionally, I have invited quite a few of our legislators, representatives as well as those seeking office, so that attendees can have the opportunity to find out more about their platforms and the relevant work they are doing in support of the environment!

Please RSVP to me directly by emailing me at werdachel@aol.com. Be sure to indicate if you want to order dinner or just have dessert & coffee/tea. Since we have to arrange the number of food orders with the Golf Course in advance, I must have your RSVP no later than end-of-day, Monday, July 24th to guarantee your meal reservation.

About the Barton Community Garden and P-Patch:

Neighbors in the West Seattle area noticed a vacant lot on the corner of Barton Ave. SW and 34th Ave SW.

This was a prime spot to create open green space! West Seattle had been designated as a priority area for new community garden development, so the neighborhood has been working with the Department of Neighborhoods, the Parks and Green Spaces Levy, and the broader community to make this garden a reality.

WSDW Lunch Meeting with ‘Moms Demand Action’ @ West Seattle Golf Course
Sep 28 @ 11:15 am – 1:15 pm

Hello Members, Supporters and Friends of the West Seattle Democratic Women!

This month we have a very special program in store for you at our meeting. Nuria Hansen, the West Seattle lead from Moms Demand Action, along with several of her colleagues, will be giving an inspiring presentation at our September meeting on the history of how their group was born, what they have been doing since their creation, and what we can all do to help protect our children, grandchildren, and each other from the ravages of gun violence.

Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America was created to demand action from state and federal legislators, companies, and educational institutions, to establish common-sense gun reforms. With chapters in all 50 states and a powerful grassroots network of moms, this nationwide organization has successfully effected change at the local, state and national level!

Please plan to join us, bring your friends, family, or anyone you think might be interested in getting involved with the WSDW! We love our members and always welcome newcomers!

Details of the meeting and program:

We meet at the West Seattle Golf Course on Thursday, September 28th. Theresa will be out of town on that day, so there will be no 10:30am group discussion.
Registration and social time begins at 11:15am
Postcard-writing will also begin at 11:15am; please take a few minutes and write a postcard to voters in the 45th Legislative District and help us elect Manka Dhingra! Manka is the key to turning the State Senate to a Democratic Majority–we are going all out to help her win!
Lunch service begins at 11:30am
Meeting business begins at 11:45am
Presentation from Moms Demand Action begins at 12noon
Meeting adjourns at 1:15pm.

Please RSVP by replying directly to this invitation (or email werdachel@aol.com) as soon as possible if you will be joining us and indicate whether you want to order lunch or dessert-only. We need to confirm the attendee numbers with the WS Golf Course by Monday morning, September 25th.

WS Junction Association Members: Free Admission, email lora@wsjunction.org

After Hours is the WSCC monthly social event where you have the opportunity to meet and network with West Seattle Chamber of Commerce and other members of our business community.

Featured at the October After Hours will be round table discussions that explore the challenges of the business community and the resources available to deal with the challenges.

The West Seattle Chamber of Commerce and the West Seattle Junction Association were awarded a grant from the Office of Economic Development to identify these challenges and gather information as to how businesses were dealing with the issues.

Our partner has been interviewing business owners throughout the seven business nodes; the findings will be discussed at this After Hours. We have found that many businesses are not aware of resources that are already available and where to get them.

Our objective is to make this information available to you. In addition, we will create a list of needed resources to tackle in the upcoming year.

Your input is of great value and we look forward to having you be a part of these discussions at the WSCC After Hours.

Neighborhood House Benefit: ‘Caravale’ – Vietnam through art, music and cuisine @ Palace Ballroom
Oct 27 @ 6:30 pm – 10:30 pm

Neighborhood House invites you to Caravale – an evening to explore different cultures and celebrate community.

This year, we will experience the beauty, resilience and joy of Vietnam through art, music and cuisine. “Travel” with us to this intriguing, coastal country for a remarkable night of conversation, entertainment and inspiration.

Award-winning chefs Tom Douglas and Matthew Dillon will prepare a multi-course feast of Vietnamese favorites, and a handcrafted cocktail will set the mood for a magical evening. A performance by local traditional musicians is sure to delight, and dancing follows dinner and a short program.

Friday, October 27, 2017 | 6:30–10:30 pm.
Palace Ballroom | Seattle, WA

Caravale is an annual benefit for Neighborhood House. Funds raised support programs serving immigrants and refugees living in King County.

Your gift of $250, $500 or more will touch the lives of children and families throughout our region. Here are some examples of how:
•$250 pays for a year of tutoring for a child learning English, promoting success in school.
•$500 pays for a 2-hour college-readiness seminar for 5 first-time students pursuing a degree.
•$750 covers the cost of a citizenship application, helping someone reach a very special goal.
•$1,000 provides training for 90 parents of children in our early learning programs, teaching them about the school system and how to advocate for their child.
•$3,000 pays for a year of citizenship classes so that 15 people can learn English and prepare for the citizenship exam.
•$6,000 covers a year of job training and support so that an immigrant or refugee can begin a living wage career.

Supporters giving $1,000 or more per year will be welcomed into our exclusive Sparklight Circle and are invited to our popular Grillin’ with Dillon donor recognition event.

Caravale tickets cost $125 per person, and include all food and beverages. Purchase yours here or call Ward Wright at 206.461.8430, ext. 2053 to reserve a seat at this bountiful table. If you would like to host a table for eight or 10 guests, please phone Ward to learn about options and pricing.

Would your company or organization like to sponsor Caravale? Please read our sponsorship chart for opportunities, or contact Kae Saeteurn at kaes@nhwa.org or 206.461.8430, ext. 2052 for details.

If you’re unable to join us but would like to support Neighborhood House, donate here. We appreciate your generosity.

Parts of the trails are graveled and well-constructed; other parts are not formally maintained, so come prepared for possible muddy patches. Longfellow Creek celebration
Nov 5 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

From Seattle Parks:

Many community members, from organizations to individuals, work hard to keep Longfellow Creek healthy and accessible. Twenty-five years ago, two community plans laid out a vision for improved access to Longfellow creek. The Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail was developed by neighbors in partnership with government, businesses, non-profits, and schools. Formal tours and stewardship opportunities—like planting trees and monitoring water quality and salmon—provide hands-on connections to the Creek. Many schools in the area participate in arts, environmental education, and other programs along the Creek.

Longfellow Creek is a natural link among communities throughout Delridge, High Point, and Westwood neighborhoods. While many consider it a natural wonder, the Creek’s benefit to people, plants, and animals can be hidden from view. To bring light to Longfellow Creek’s contributions, the City of Seattle and community partners are hosting a celebration of the creek and we want you to join!

Celebrate 25+ years at the Creek

Bring your neighbors, friends, and family to celebrate over 25 years of community engagement with Longfellow Creek on November 5, 2017. The fun will kick off at the corner of 28th Ave SW and SW Dakota St* and run from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. All ages are encouraged to come participate in activities like exploring the Dragonfly Pavilion and Salmon Bone Bridge, caring for garden beds, creating a postcard inspired by Longfellow Creek, looking inside a salmon, and enjoying guided nature walks.

Please RSVP at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LongfellowCreek
Questions? Email Sheryl.Shapiro@Seattle.gov or call (206) 615-1443.
*In case of heavy rain, the celebration will be relocated to the Delridge Community Center (4501 Delridge Way SW, Seattle, WA 98106).

Dragonfly Pavilion and Salmon Bone Bridge

Let your imagination soar when you see the giant salmon bones and 16-foot-tall dragonfly—two copper sculptures on the Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail.

Postcards from the Creek

Meet your creek is an art project by Vaughn Bell, an artist who lives in the creek watershed. Create unique, hand-made postcards based on your observations and understanding of Longfellow Creek. You will get the chance to mail the postcard to a friend or loved one, or to donate it to the postcard archive which may be displayed in the community. Images of the postcards will be shared online at the Meet Your Creek blog.

Salmon: Look inside

You may know how a fish swims, but do you know how it eats, breathes, and reproduces? You’ll discover the swimming, eating, breathing, and reproducing systems—and you can touch them (if you want to)!

Nature Walk

Local naturalists will guide you through the park and open spaces on a flat, wide trail. See and learn about the creek, salmon, and the wide variety of plants and their historical uses.

This coffee house presentation will examine the erosion of the native Sioux and Cheyenne culture that culminated at the Battle of the Little Big Horn, later to become legendarily know as “Custer’s Last Stand”. In reality, it was not only his last stand, but the last gasp of Indian resistance against Euro-American encroachment on the northern plains.

Adelson will be examining this epic confrontation and the characters and events that shaped this story. A story that still haunts the American consciousness even today.

The lives of Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Gall, Major Marcus Reno and Captain Frederick Benteen are some of the individuals highlighted in the discussion.

Adelson, a West Seattle graduate, is a prolific writer and his book “Little Bighorn; Voices From A Distant Wind” will be available for purchase. In addition, his documentary, “Contested Ground” is included with an autographed copy of the book.

Adelson has presented to thousands of visitors at Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in southeast Montana. He has been a lecturer on the History Channel, C-Span, Discovery Channel, Travel Channel and other media productions.
You can examine his work at his website.

Nov 16 @ 11:15 am – 1:00 pm

Hello Members, Supporters, and Friends of the West Seattle Democratic Women!

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, our Membership Meeting is traditionally held one week earlier than usual, so please note, there’s a pretty short turnaround on coordinating this month’s program and your flexibility is appreciated in sending back your RSVP, so we can confirm your attendance! Our guest speaker, Bob Kaminski, is from 350 Seattle, and he will be talking about the fracking of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and where in our own communities it is being proposed and drilled for right now! Bob will be accompanied by a couple of residents of the communities where these fracking projects are happening!

Our meeting will be held at the West Seattle Golf Course on Thursday, November 16th. The pre-meeting discussion group, led by Theresa McCormick, will continue on the subject of Sexual Harassment and begins at 10:30am. Registration and postcard-writing starts at 11:15 am with lunch service starting at 11:30am. Meeting business begins at 11:45am, program with guest speakers starts at 12:00 noon, and the meeting adjourns at 1:15 pm.

Please reply directly to werdachel (at) aol (dot) com by no later than Monday, November 13th, to indicate if you will be coming to the meeting. Also please indicate if you would like to purchase lunch or the program fee/dessert only. Lunch is $13.50 for members and $15.00 for non-members. If you do not want to purchase lunch, the program fee is $5.00 and includes dessert and coffee/tea.

Nighttime low-tide beach walks @ Constellation Park, Alki
Jan 28 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join trained volunteer Beach Naturalists at South Alki/Constellation Park on the following dates this year for a free guided exploration at very low tide.

Explore the beach during winter nighttime low tides with Beach Naturalist staff and volunteers. Discover what creatures we see on the beach at this time of year. Dress for the weather (bundle up!) and for tide pooling: boots, hats, gloves and a good flashlight are musts.

Sunday, January 28, 7 pm–9pm

Beach etiquette:
While on the beach, please remember:
~ Walk carefully; there’s life beneath your feet!
~ Touch gently with one wet finger.
~ Observe animals where they are and please avoid picking them up.
~ Please only move rocks that are small enough to be moved with one hand and return them to the position in which you found them.
~ Please only remove trash from the beach, nothing else. Many of our beaches are protected by law.

This Pow Wow began when we saw a need in the community to help support the Native youth. Many children in our area are Native foster children or “urban” Native children. Many of them not knowing their culture or feeling the need to connect further with it. This Pow Wow allows them to dance, sing and further connect with the Native traditions. It also brings our community together to share in this celebration!

Save the Date For the 2018 34th District Democratic Caucus

Saturday, March 24, 10 am – 1 pm

At Evergreen High School, 830 SW 116th St.

Join us to elect delegates to the state convention and hear from candidates for office, including 34th LD state House and Senate seats.

In accordance with the charter of the Democratic Party of Washington State, every two years the party holds a State Convention where the party platform and rules are adopted.

Those decisions are voted on democratically, by delegates elected at Local Party Organizations throughout the state. The 34th District Democrats have been allocated 14 delegate slots to fill, along with 7 alternates.

To vote at the Caucus an individual must be a resident, registered voter in the 34th Legislative District, and sign a registration sheet stating that they are a Democrat, and agree to recordation of and public display of their attendance at the Caucus. Further, 17 year-olds who will turn 18 by election day, November 6, 2018, are allowed (and encouraged!) to fully participate and vote in the caucuses and conventions, and to run and serve as delegate.

Aug 17 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

**AUGUST 17th NOTE – While the city brochure said 6 pm, we went to Myrtle Park and found no one there, so we researched further and found that the performers’ website says 7 pm – sorry!**

LATINO CULTURAL CELEBRATIONS

Each celebration will be headlined by Paraguayan singer and dancer Deseo Carmin bringing her unique blend of Latin rhythms, modern Latin jazz and flamenco-influenced music and dance, accompanied by the amazing guitarist Stoma Andrei. Also featuring a performance piece Aqua, written and performed by Venezuelan Milivia Pacheco and directed by Fernando Luna, exploring the Afro-Latina experience and their connection to water.

Families are encouraged to bring a picnic and enjoy these evenings of music, dance and poetry.

Cooking with Class @ Salty's on Alki
Sep 13 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

From Salty’s on Alki:

Annual Cooking with Class 2018 at Salty’s on Alki
Cook with Your Favorite Seattle Chefs, Sept. 13 2018

This interactive, fun, play-with-your-food event hooks you and amazing chefs up to make dishes you will love to recreate at home. Wineries donate wines that pair with the dishes and you get to savor it all together. Nosh on Salty’s appetizers and bites from B & E Meats and Seafood, and sip refreshing beverages before doing the hard work. Come join in the fun in support of the Pike Place Market Foundation.

People love getting to know Seattle area chefs and cooking with them, and chefs love meeting their guests instead of being behind the scenes as they are at most fundraisers. It’s a win-win for everyone, especially our beneficiary. We embark in a new direction specifically targeting programs that assist seniors at the Pike Place Market Foundation. Seniors can get overlooked in the world of fundraising; we like to focus on helping make their lives a little more secure and comfortable.

Join us at this fun event on September 15, 2016, at Salty’s on Alki in West Seattle. Tickets sell out every year, so be sure to check out seattledining.com/cwc for the list of chefs and the food items they will teach you about and availability. Each chef donates their time, experience and product.

Be sure to also look for the Wine Tasting Table with a taste of the wines served during class. If you’ve never experienced Cooking with Class, make this the year you sign up — go online to seattledining.com/cwc. It’s a fun evening that helps a lot of people and takes place in one of the nicest spots in town with the best view of Seattle. There’s just nothing bad about it.
