Native Plant ID and Invasive Plant Removal Along Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail @ Thistle Street Green Space
Dec 8 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

A beautiful area called the Thistle Street Green Space along the
Longfellow Creek Legacy Trail needs your help in a battle against invasive
species. Next to a local pea patch garden, Chief Sealth High School,
and Longfellow Creek, this piece of green space requires regular
maintenance to keep it clear of invaders like Himalayan
Blackberry, Buttercup, Herb Robert, and others. Come volunteer with
DIRT Corps and learn how to identify both native plants and invasive plants
as well as how to remove all kinds of invasive species so native
plants can thrive. Afterwards you can walk the trails and explore this
hidden gem in Delridge.

First Saturday hikes in West Duwamish Greenbelt @ (see listing)
Apr 6 @ 10:00 am

Hiking season is beginning in the West Duwamish Greenbelt. Hike with the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails group (www.wdgtrails.com) on guided walks to find birds, bugs, mushrooms, native plants, geology, and history. Meet the first Saturday of each month at 10 am, usually at the trailhead at 14th Ave. SW and SW Holly Street, but starting places may vary; watch postings for individual hikes. We hike mostly on constructed and maintained gravel trails, suitable for family outings.

The West Duwamish Greenbelt is the largest contiguous forest in Seattle, spreading over 550 acres in West Seattle from the tip of Pigeon Point to Westcrest Park. Urban forests are important community spaces that increase our city’s natural beauty, contribute to our health, and make the natural world accessible for everyone to enjoy.

Here’s the schedule for the 2019 season. All hikes start at 10:00 am.

April 6: Bird watching hike with Scott Markowitz, an international birder, member of the board of directors at Tahoma Audubon. Meet at the Puget Park trailhead at 4418 21st Ave. S.W.

May 4: Insect hike with a bug club member.

June 1: “Walking Native Land” on National Trails Day with Ken Workman, a descendant of Chief Seattle and a member of the Duwamish Tribe. Ken will talk about his personal experience growing up in the greenbelt and his tribe’s use of the land and nearby Duwamish River.

The hike begins at 10 a.m. near the Chinese Garden at South Seattle College. We’ll walk down Puget Ridge to the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center and return. This hike is on unimproved trail with aspirations to be a connector between ridge and river, about two miles round-trip with 200 feet of elevation gain coming back. Wear good shoes or boots and be prepared for small obstacles like logs, brush, and walking near the edge of West Marginal Way.

July 6: Native plant identification with Steve Richmond of GardenCycles

August 3: Geology and land use history with Paul West and Craig Rankin

September 7: History of the greenbelt with Matt Groshong, Randy Nelson, and Craig Rankin

October 5: Mushrooms with Kim Traverse of the Puget Sound Myco Society

Whale Trail Lecture Series: Recovering the Southern Residents @ C & P Coffee Company
Apr 18 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

At C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor):
Whale Trail Lecture Series:
Recovering the Southern Residents: lessons learned from other populations
Presentation by Dr. Timothy Ragen

When: Thursday April 18, 7:00 – 8:30
–Doors open at 6:30
Where: C&P Coffee Company
Cost: $5 suggested donation; kids free
Advance tickets: brownpapertickets.com
Presented by The Whale Trail

With just 75 individuals in the population, the southern resident orcas are in danger of going extinct. Is it too late? What will it take to recover the southern residents, and what can we learn from similar efforts with other populations?

Dr. Tim Ragen will review the status of the southern resident killer whale population and then review conservation efforts for other marine mammals to highlight lessons learned and relevant to killer whale conservation.

Whale Trail Director Donna Sandstrom will also give an update on orca legislation, and Governor Inslee’s Task Force on SRKW Recovery.

Buy tickets now to reserve your seat.

About the Speaker

Tim Ragen earned a Ph.D. in oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, California in 1990. His dissertation focused on field and modeling studies of the northern fur seal.

After earning his degree he completed a National Research Council Associateship at the U.S. National Marine Mammal Laboratory, where he continued modeling studies of the northern fur seal. In 1991 he joined the Honolulu Laboratory of the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service, where he worked in the Hawaiian monk seal recovery program. In 1997 he took a management position as the Steller sea lion recovery coordinator for the Alaska Region, National Marine Fisheries Service. There his work focused primarily on indirect interactions between the endangered Steller sea lion and the Alaska groundfish fisheries.

In 2000 he moved to Washington, D.C., to serve as Scientific Program Director for the U.S. Marine Mammal Commission. In 2006 he was appointed the Commissions Executive Director. He retired from that position in June 2013 and currently lives in Anacortes, WA.

About The Whale Trail

The Whale Trail (www.thewhaletrail.org) is a series of sites to view orcas and other marine mammals from shore. Our mission is to inspire appreciation and stewardship of whales and our marine environment.

Through our current sites and signs, including two on every Washington State ferry, we reach more than 70 million people each year. The Whale Trail is adding new sites along the North American west coast, from California to British Columbia.

The Whale Trail is led by a core team of partners including NOAA Fisheries, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Seattle Aquarium, the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, the Whale Museum.

Donna Sandstrom is the Founder and Executive Director. She is a member of Governor Inslee’s Task Force on SRKW Recovery, and Vessel Impacts Working Group.

The Whale Trail is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, registered in Washington State. Join us!

At the Delridge Library:

In this very special “Earth Day” LibraryLab, learn about the Longfellow Creek Watershed and all of the amazing restoration projects past and present that have allowed us to enjoy this incredible green space.

The Seattle Public Library is partnering with Seattle Parks and Recreation and Seattle Public Utilities to host an extra special LibraryLab on Earth Day (April 22nd) at the Delridge Branch (we’re taking over the whole library that day!). We will be learning about ecosystems by exploring the one in our backyard. Healthy Kids Day 2019 at the West Seattle Y @ West Seattle YMCA
Apr 27 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

On Saturday, April 27, the West Seattle YMCA is holding a free community event to inspire
more kids to keep their minds and bodies active at the annual YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day ® , the
Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families Sponsored by the
Howard Johnson ® by Wyndham hotel brand, Healthy Kids Day is an opportunity to ignite
children’s imaginations so that they can imagine what they’ll accomplish this summer. The
day-long event features activities such as hands-only CPR lessons, free helmets and helmet
fittings, games, healthy cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts to motivate and teach families
how to develop and maintain healthy routines at home throughout the summer months.
Healthy Kids Day, celebrated at over 1,500 Ys across the country by over one million
participants, works to get more kids moving and learning, creating habits that they continue all
summer long. When kids are out of school, they can face hurdles that prevent them from
reaching their full potential. Research shows that without access to out-of-school learning
activities, kids fall behind academically. Kids also gain weight twice as fast during summer than
the school year. As spring turns to summer, Healthy Kids Day is a powerful reminder not to let
children idle away their summer days. Instead, the Y wants families to focus on helping children
imagine what they can accomplish over the summer.

“When a child is healthy, happy, and supported they can make great things happen,” says
Shalimar Gonzales, Senior Executive Director, West Seattle and Fauntleroy YMCA. “We believe
in the potential of all children, and we strive to help kids find that potential within themselves.
A child’s development is never on vacation and Healthy Kids Day is a great opportunity to
educate families and motivate kids to stay active in spirit, mind and body throughout the
summer,” said Shalimar Gonzales, Senior Executive Director, West Seattle and Fauntleroy
YMCA

“All of us at Howard Johnson are incredibly proud to be supporting Healthy Kids Day, inspiring
families to get active, spend quality time together and create smiles that last a lifetime,” said
Clem Bence, Howard Johnson brand leader and vice president of operations. “Giving back to
the communities where our hotels operate is fundamental to our values as a brand and we couldn’t be more excited to be partnering with local Ys across the country on such a meaningful initiative.”

Howard Johnson has been a proud national partner of the Y for the past two years and three out of every four Howard Johnson hotels are located within just 10 miles of a local Y. In addition to supporting Healthy Kids Day, the brand offers all Y members up to 20% off stays at participating hotels across the country, with 10% of every booking benefiting the Y nationally.

Keeping Kids Healthy All Summer Long
In celebration of YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y offers the following tips to help families
develop healthy habits this summer that can have a lifetime effect:

 High Five the Fruits and Veggies – Make sure kids get at least five servings of fruits
and veggies each day, the minimum number nutritionists recommend for healthy
childhood development. And to keep kids’ taste buds evolving, have everyone in the
family try at least one bite of a new fruit or vegetable at least once a month.

 Read Together – The summer is a great time to enjoy books with summer program
participants—and 30 minutes a day goes a long way! Take trips to the local library or
create a family reading challenge to see who can log the most minutes of reading.
Encourage youth to create their own stories as well.

 Get Moving! – Activities that require movement also help kids flex their mental muscle.
Use materials in unique ways: ask youth to build models, manipulate tools or develop
their own theatrical scenes.
 Play Together – Play may be the best way to prevent childhood obesity. By putting
more play into your family’s day, you will soon find yourself getting the activity that will
have your family feeling energized and strong.

 Make sleep a priority – Doctors recommend 10-12 hours of sleep a day for children
ages 5-12 and 7-8 hours per night for adults. Sleep plays a critical role in maintaining
our healthy immune system, metabolism, mood, memory, and learning.

West Seattle’s Healthy Kids Day takes place at the West Seattle YMCA in the Fauntleroy Triangle Area (3622 SW Snoqualmie St) from 10 am-1 pm and features fun, active play and educational activities, such as hands-only CPR lessons, water safety activities, healthy snack making, and more! Plus we’ll be waiving the joining fee!

Using Comedy to Communicate: A Workshop about Sex and Relationships @ Tin Dog Brewing
Apr 27 @ 2:00 pm – 4:30 pm

What if we used improv comedy to strengthen our relationships and better communicate with our partners?

About this Event

The team behind the internationally touring sex positive comedy show, the Air Sex Championships, is partnering with local Seattle relationship coach Cora Boyd to develop a workshop that uses the fundamentals of improv comedy to open up communication around sex and relationships.

This workshop is for couples, singles, people in relationships of all formations…anyone who’s ready to get creative, feel empowered in their interpersonal lives, and, of course, treat sex with a big old dose of humor and levity. Though the subject matter may veer toward R-rated, the exercises and games keep it all light and ensure everyone is having fun and participating at their comfort level.

The brewery will be open, ready to serve at 1:30 if you need some liquid encouragement. The Air Sex Championships tour stop is later this same night at El Corazon’s Funhouse at 9:00p–tickets available here.

First Saturday hikes in West Duwamish Greenbelt @ (see listing)
May 4 @ 10:00 am

Guided Bug Walk @ (see listing)
May 4 @ 10:00 am

Expert Amber Chiozza of Scarabs, a local entomological society, will teach us about insects and spiders living in our beautiful West Duwamish Greenbelt.

Meet at the trailhead across the street from 4715 21st Avenue SW. Bring water, sturdy shoes or boots and be prepared for the elements. The walk will take about 1.5 hours.

Sponsored by the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails Group, www.wdgtrails.org. For more information contact us at wdgtrails@gmail.com.

Last week Governor Jay Inslee signed five bills to protect southern resident orcas. The Canadian Government also announced new measures to protect orcas including establishing feeding sanctuaries for the orcas and setting a distance setback of 400 yards for all vessels. A good week for the whales!

Join us to celebrate a new era in orca protection, and hear an update about orca activity in Puget Sound from whale researcher Mark Sears. Learn what’s next for orcas, the Task Force, and the Whale Trail, and how you can help! Recovery.
